1341  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC-e legal problems? on: February 03, 2014, 11:09:58 PM
So if I understand correctly Bitstamp is now the only valid exchange left?
Maybe for Americans.
What are the other centralized options for non-Americans? (despite my awkward phrasing, I'm genuinely curious)
1342  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scam? on: February 03, 2014, 11:06:49 PM
You're totally safe, guy. Paypal's great for buyers, same with credit cards. Make sure you mention it's a non-tangible item when you're talking to Paypal, but you probably don't need to. Your chance of success is 100%. As long as you're pro-active, it's a great way to buy stuff -- not so much to sell stuff.

It's a decent trolling opportunity. It may be wise to send him $5 as a gift after Paypal refunds you, saying something along the line of "Fair's fair. I wanted to pay you for the lesser amount you did send." I have a feeling it'd hit a nerve, given he sent you .02BTC.

When you feel you're done dealing with scammers and other weirdos, I definitely suggest following the previous poster's advice. Do business face-to-face with someone. There are a lot of great people in the community, and it's a decent opportunity to meet a new friend.

BitFinex has been working well, but that's basically Bitstamp + a few more coins in liquidity. Cheesy

There's uhhh... BTCChina? I think they still operate in some capacity. I think Kraken might still be going with its 2BTC daily trade volume. There's uhhh....... uhhh..... I think that may actually be it, but person-to-person exchange is booming, which is fantastic. Trouble is they generally rely on centralized exchanges to determine price to use.

Hold on........
1345  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How do you calculate mining yield manually when no online calculators are around on: February 03, 2014, 07:09:25 PM
You lot are spoiled. Back in my day, we pulled out a god-damned napkin... there are a bunch of ways to guesstimate it. This one apparently stuck in my head.

Rough expected reward (per day) = (your hash rate / network hash rate)*(144*25)*(1-%pool fee)

Ex: you have 500TH/s. Network has 20000TH/s. 5% pool fee.
(500/20000)*(144*25)*(1-.05)
(.025)*(3600)*(.95)

Expected return: 85.5BTC/day

Adjust for coin of your choice. You'd get a better immediate estimate by working with difficulty instead of network hashrate, but - eh.

I'm still waiting for my Bitcoinica money.
I guess that's the most effective way to keep your hands strong. Cheesy

Civilization V and Europa Universalis IV

I like Europa Universalis because it's a lot more real then other strategy games,..

much bigger use of diplomacy instead just warfare as in other games Smiley
Patch 1.4 improved EU IV quite a bit over how it used to play (I haven't played since 1.1x). CoP makes natives viable, though procedurally generated New World could do with some tweaking (nonsensical placement of trade hubs, and I really, really wish they didn't use real names... I'd have no idea where most small nations were if not for Paradox games... I'm worried about this messing with my memory). Currently playing a Creek nation in good position for domination... Euros just pushed into the New World. Hopefully can maintain an isolated border with one of them long enough to reform and beat them back off the land. CTDs every now and then for me. Glad the horrible trade redirection bug seems to be fixed.
1348  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Miner on an usb flashdrive on: February 03, 2014, 08:38:16 AM
Can people use that on pc's that don't even allow you to open unknown exe files?
Not by itself. CGMiner isn't malware (though it's often mislabeled as such by AV programs). You'd need to figure out how to elevate the permission level of the CGMiner instance. Not my area, though. You'd probably get slapped with a felony charge if in the US since it's not a matter of if it's discovered, but when.

How would they know who has implemented the miner on the pc's?Cheesy
USB drives are physical, so you'll need to physically take them in. It's easy enough to grab the time of when specific changes to the PC were made, so you'd just have to match the time with security cameras or witness reports. Since the software needs a pool address and credentials, it's also possible (unlikely) it could be traced back to you that way.

1350  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Miner on an usb flashdrive on: February 03, 2014, 08:16:56 AM
Heard form a friend that he was able to get his hands on a miner that you have on your usb flashdrive and you can start mining on computers with restricted admin configurations.

What this means is he goes to his local library, puts in the usb flash drive in the computers and they start up a miner that mines cpu/gpu on a certain % (so that normal users using the pc's for surfing won't notice any lag) and he does this on 30-40 pcs, all mining litecoins or whatever for him day and night (since the pc's are on 24/7).

Anyone heard of this? Is it available for download anywhere?
It's called CGMiner.
1351  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How-to receive shipments anonymously on: February 03, 2014, 07:22:51 AM
This is so obscure why would the fed have a special law
for it and open it up to the public?
Not really a special law, just holding a package at USPS until someone presents ID. In this case, ID is a specific FRN. No idea if they'd honor this, though, and it seems like a good way to bring a lot of extra attention to whatever you're shipping. Hold for pickup: http://about.usps.com/mailpro/2011/jan-feb/page6.htm
1352  Other / Bitcoin Wiki / Re: Is Bitcoin.it a real wiki ? on: February 03, 2014, 07:01:44 AM
The wiki's kind of broken through being outdated in most articles. It lags months behind major Bitcoin developments, like whenever the fee structure or block size changes. The Trade section's a relic full of broken links and missing major, new-ish businesses. I'd support a wiki experimenting with a different way of doing things. Fwiw.
Think this is a consequence of having to pay 0.01 BTC in order to update the wiki or correct errors, people just not going to do it, updating a wiki and correcting errors is actually work, your actually working for the wiki site to provide them with content and on top of the work your doing for them you even have to pay them, it is just a ridiculous concept.
It could be worthwhile to actually have theymos do it under the forum's name (integrate as wiki.bitcointalk?). Mods could be paid a meager amount as is done here to help encourage activity. Set up a donation wallet for the wiki and whatever isn't covered by donations can come out of the bottomless pit of forum money. Maybe.

1355  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Netflix to accept Bitcoins soon on: February 02, 2014, 01:21:20 PM
Almost all the online retailers are thinking about accepting bitcoins. I often think about vomiting in the toilet, but I don't usually make it. Is Keiser turning into a Speculation thread troll? Kiss

(Source1 doesn't appear to display any article, just posts the article title and a picture)
I used to like Keiser way before I got into Bitcoin, but he does seem to be turning into quite the troll now. Are you aware of the coin named after being released soon?
Yeah. He seems like a fun kind of guy to hang out with, though maybe is occasionally violent when drunk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrpibturk5I

1357  Economy / Speculation / Re: Large DROP in BTC PRICE can be caused by acceptance Amazon.com or other .com? on: February 02, 2014, 01:00:52 PM
So can BTC price be changed because of wider acceptance?
It's really hard to say what BTC<->fiat bridge services are doing with the money. Intuitively, you'd probably assume the price to drop when major companies start taking in $hundreds of thousands in BTC and receiving cash for it. We don't know how many people buy BTC to replace what they spend, and we don't know how many new BTC users originate from merchant adoption. Way too many variables and unknowns to even begin to try understanding, IMO.
1358  Other / Meta / Re: MODS Give Us Back Giveaway Threads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on: February 02, 2014, 12:50:36 PM
Everyone talks about the slippery slope of banning discussions, but it's time we talk about the slippery slope of unbanning discussions.

I suggest that if giveaway threads are brought back, it's only reasonable to bring back animal porn threads, too. After, we can bring back the "assassination contracts" subforum to the public marketplace instead of stuffing it in the donators-only subforum.
1359  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I've got an idea for a new coin :) on: February 02, 2014, 12:38:24 PM
I can't afford to pay....

And I'm not knowledgable enough to set it up.

But the idea is KISS COIN

"Send and receive money with a loving kiss"

Ticker symbol either KSS or MWAH

If someone creates it, send me 10,000 kisses!  Kiss Kiss Kiss

Your next action, then, is to lock the thread and petition a moderator to move it to the trash can. Thanks for playing.
1360  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Value of the AOC Alphaomegacoin? on: February 02, 2014, 12:21:23 PM
Does someone know the value of the Alphaomegacoin AOC at this moment.
I can't find anyting about this.

10 AoC is one stone of yonder.
"rikkie"
I can vouch for the accuracy of this. If you do not have any stones of yonder, you could probably get 1k-10k AOCs with one stone of over-yonder.
