521  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: What altcoin exchanges offer margin trading, shorting and lending? on: May 09, 2017, 08:33:40 PM
allowing shorting is a good thing actually, it maintains better price stability and liquidity. Margin.. not  so much.
522  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Poloniex abusing their position is YOUR fault on: May 09, 2017, 08:30:48 PM
I've had no issues so far with the trading I've done on poloniex, Bittrex, and GDAX.  I wasn't trading during peak periods when server load may be high however. They seem to process withdraws in a timely manner and I'm careful not to try transferring over their daily limit.
523  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: May 09, 2017, 08:22:58 PM
How I keep shit secure...

Malwarebytes and Avira running on the machine

2 factor authentication for everything, with the keys backed up in an encrypted 7z document (random 32 character password)

all passwords random gibberish stored in lastpass with 32 character password which is also random gibberish on a QR code I keep in my wallet, scanned in with a 2D barcode scanner I bought used off ebay.

browser caches all stored on dataram ramdrive which erases when I shut down computer

I literally don't know any of my own passwords except ones to log into forums.

I trust lastpass to not compromise my shit.. I suppose it is an online option and some are super paranoid but all the information is encrypted, and my master password is strong, and my recovery email address is not stored on the lastpass program, and has it's own 2 factor and own 32 character password stored in my wallet.

To access my shit a person would need my home computer, wallet, and 2 factor authentication phone, and know what to do with them when they find them, and I never keep them in the same place at the same time.

I also encrypt my XEM shit in a 7z document when I'm done with it.

525  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $0.85 transaction fee is absolutely ridiculous! on: May 08, 2017, 09:28:34 PM
This is why altcoins like XEM are gaining popularity. They were designed from the ground up with their own code to correct bitcoin's weaknesses. Use much less electricity, coin is not inflationary, is capable of handing more than 3000 transactions per second versus bitcoin's 3-5, fee is 1XEM for up to 20,000 XEM and another XEM every 10,000 after that. Messaging system, better scaling, and adoption by Japanese banks.

If you don't like that one, pick another one with fast transaction times like DASH, or even LTC with segwit.   Only use BTC when you have to deal with converting to fiat.

526  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What will be the next $1 Billion Blockchain? on: May 08, 2017, 06:05:03 PM
And it only gained a piffling $250-300 million or so in the last hour or two. It's time this measurement was taken outside and shot.

It does accurately reflect the total amount of coins you would get if you were able to sell them all at the current price NOW, but of course just like a stock's market cap, you'll never be able to do that.. that's why market cap is a misleading metric of a stock's valuation.. yeah google's market cap is 650 billion but you'd never get that much out if everybody tried to sell. Game of musical chairs... you get that price as long as you have a pool of willing buyers.

Apple became the first 800 billion dollar company today... whoop dee doo...
527  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Class action lawsuit for Poloniex on: May 08, 2017, 05:04:28 PM
Its worrying that with all the money they must have coming in they still cant find the funds to do a server upgrade.

Not as easy as people make it seem.. think about newegg or amazon on black friday....  even the best services can get overwhelmed and the increase in volume has been relatively new and it takes time to upgrade servers.   Many people miss good deals on black friday because sites crash.. it's the risk you take investing in what I would dub the "wild west" of the investing world.
528  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) on: May 08, 2017, 04:34:24 PM
everyone here is saying it's one of the best coins but nobody seems able to explain what it actually does?  all these coins websites read the same, so maybe someone can lay it out nice and simple.

google is your friend.  There's a huge thread on BTC in the announcement forum. It's an evolution on bitcoin to address bitcoin's shortcomings. A private version of the blockchain called Mijin which is based on the upcoming Catapult release is being developed by various banks in Japan also.

Watch this video.. it's a basic intro to the coin. Check the forums. Do your own DD.

529  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: New to Altcoins (which to buy or am I too late) on: May 08, 2017, 03:33:52 PM
There are some coins that are "less overvalued" than others... for example if you hold XRP or ETH, selling it for DASH or XEM would be a wise move as these are good coins with much lower market caps that are going places.  I have no opinion on litecoin. XEM's tech is superior to segwit, but litecoin gets respect for being the second crypto currency created, kind of like the "silver" of crypto currencies.. though for a while there it did look like it was becoming irrelevant... but hey silver traded at 4 bucks for a long time.

As for whether the market is overvalued or not, only time will tell. From a technical (charting patterns) perspective yes it is, but from an overall global perspective 50 billion is nothing.   If a company is bought out that stock can triple and it won't go down if the company buying it is much larger than the company being bought.. that's kind of like what's going on with crypto right now. The global fiat market is MUCH LARGER than the tiny crypto market.
530  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why does the mainstream media ignore altcoins? on: May 08, 2017, 03:19:30 PM
They are still small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.. it's kind of like how they focus on gold and ignore silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium.  Gold is the "standard" used by the rich, similar to how bitcoin is regarded.
531  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What will be the next $1 Billion Blockchain? on: May 08, 2017, 01:47:36 AM
Congratulations people who voted NEM, you were correct!

532  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Give me your buy, sell or neutral ratings on the following cryptocurrencies: on: May 08, 2017, 01:41:08 AM
Buy bitcoin, sell all the others.  That's my advice, and it'll be the same advice 5 years from now, when your list is populated with shitcoins-du-jour having different names.  They're all shitty and they all should be sold to buy bitcoin.

I don't understand how you can say what you did. I preface this by saying I'm a newb just wanting to have constructive conversation and educate myself on the facts. Is the underlying tech of some of the altcoins not much better than bitcoin (litecoin as an example)? Only reason bitcoin is stronger right now is brand name/network effect or is that not correct?

agreed.   As for price predictions, I'm not going to make any.
533  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how are these alt whales cashing out? on: May 07, 2017, 10:12:28 PM
It could be all fake and the biggest heist in crypto in the making

There's a better than average chance you might be right.. poloniex might be ready to destroy the credibility of cryptos.. hope you are wrong. In any case they get none of my business until they take care of simple things like this in a timely manner.

Bittrex forgot that I submitted the information and is asking me to do it again. Poloniex hasn't approved it yet, and Kraken is basically down due to server load ATM.

534  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: YES YOU CAN get $100 000 dollars !!just for saying hello on a thread here on bct on: May 07, 2017, 09:41:05 PM
Damn, how did I miss that?
About when did that happen?
I think it was January 2014 or somewhere around then. I have no doubt there are similar opportunities out there right now. I wouldn't know where to find them any more. The alt noise ratio is peaking.
I was wondering what the OP is talking about as i am new to the alt coin section as i never would have bothered looking into alt coins  because there are too many to even bother looking at it as anyone and everyone is coming up with an altcoin, but with the recent increase in price even i thought of looking into it,but how do you figure whether it is a good project because every ICO on being listed in a exchange is getting a good value,so i am a bit confused,is it always a good thing to invest during ICO or when they are listed in an exchange.

I suggest watching this video to see what this guy looks for.. it pretty closely matches what I look for. Good introduction into altcoins and why many of us think bitcoin will be replaced with a coin that has technology that addresses it's limitations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BJERtsnDa8

His top 3 are doing very well, though DASH was already high back then as it went up in early March.   Look at where Stellar Lumens was trading when he made the video. haha.  It's interesting to watch because you can get a snapshot in time of where the cryptos were 2 months ago.

Something you put on the grill and lightly season with a bit of Lawry's salt.. like a ribeye.. cooked medium rare. A ribeye stake.

I've been doing my own digging. There's a guy on youtube with a channel called "Let's Invest" who went through the first 300-400 of the altcoins looking for anything unique but came to the conclusion that most are clones of other coins or don't bring anything new to the table, and that the market has done a good job with pricing the more promising coins with higher market caps.  I don't want to rely on one source of information but he no doubt has some useful information.

Stellar Lumens have been in a tear... tech looks promising. I'll dig into it more, but I'm not going to rotate into a coin with such a high market cap. Need to do some more digging. Looks like a Ripple Clone from a quick look.   Linking to this thread for the sake of discussion... congrats to the guy if he actually went and loaded up on it on May 1st.. he made a killing.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1896191.0

An interesting fact about XEM is how it's made the climb with relatively little volume compared to other coins.. look at the volume on Steller Lumens... XEM has yet to get even close to that in 24 hours.. I see that as a sign of a "sleeping giant" to be honest. Even now there's not much hype about it on this forum relative to many other coins.  I admit I am hyping it slightly, but trying to remain factual and give good information as well.
537  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how are these alt whales cashing out? on: May 07, 2017, 05:50:32 PM
The last time I checked Poloniex did not verify my level 3 information. It's a race to see who approves it first, which exchanges add XEM first, etc. to see which one gets more of my business. Ideally coinbase would add XEM as they are the most trustworthy, then I can use them exclusively for the big crap and use the other exchanges for smaller dollar amounts.

The following exchanges do fiat... Bittrex, Kraken, Coinbase, and I'm sure others.   This assumes I even feel like selling. I'm in no hurry for reasons stated in other threads.
538  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: So looks like NEM is going to be the next Billion Dollar Coin on: May 07, 2017, 05:33:58 PM
Transparency and tracability in the transactions... like it or not no coin that has anonymous transactions will ever gain mainstream adoption.. you need a paper trail to avoid illegal activities and catch the people doing them.
That derailes somewhat away from XEM but.. BTC got that "paper trail" except it's stored on a tamperproof public ledger not paper but that meant nothing in regards of cloaking transactions, maybe for Silk Road purchases. Since people offered exchange services, taking your coins in exchange for fresh new coins, delivered without any connection between them.
Mass adoption can be measured by existance of at least 1, more likely more, XEM mixing services in existance.
That criteria seemingly still fails if applied against LTC

Indeed, but as these companies use the blockchain, especially privately run blockchains like Mijin, I'm going to assume they'll have a measure of control over the people using it, and perhaps that will be addressed down the road by some future technology as well. I'll keep my eyes open for what develops. You have indeed given me something to spend the evening researching, though.  If a government is determined enough, can they trace a transaction back to the source even if a person makes a determined effort to make it anonymous? People can use all sorts of means to make things anonymous, from using cash, or buying gold with the cash and using that, or simply barter.  I'd imagine as long as commodities that have value exist, there will always be the problem of tracability.. but purposely having anonymity built into your coin isn't going to make you popular for widespread adoption by those with big money.

539  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: So looks like NEM is going to be the next Billion Dollar Coin on: May 07, 2017, 03:41:53 PM
Good to see nem doing so well. Hope it makes the 1 billion mark. Sad I sold too early and hoped to get back in but still great to see it doing so well now.

Okay, market capitalization is already $800 000. I think the coin is just pumped hard right now and overtakes the market by quantity, not quality. There is nearly 9 billion coins already! The amount is huge if we compare it with normal alts (ltc, eth). Only XRP has more! Okay, many coins are together worth a lot. And so what? Honestly, I don't think this is enough for a coin to be good.
dissident says there is nice technology behind the coin, though.. All we can do is wait.

The number of coins doesn't matter that much, since you can subdivide coins into fractions.   There are guys at work who won't do the employee stock purchase thing because the price is too high, they tell me they'll wait for it to split. I try to tell them it doesn't matter what the price is, if it splits there are twice as many shares and nothing changes.. they don't seem to get it... meanwhile the stock price has increased another 33% since then and I'm sitting pretty there as well.  The "price" of a stock doesn't matter any more than the number of coins a crypto has matters.   The market cap matters.. for both the stock and the crypto.. is the crypto worth the market cap? Does the stock have a good price to earnings multiple or good growth rate?   If anything, more coins is good since XEM is trading at 9 10 cents, which is perfect for using round, whole numbers for transactions, rather than smaller fractions, not to mention the transaction confirms in seconds, not minutes, and the fee is currently much lower than bitcoin's, though it's up to a whopping 9 10 cents now for transactions under 20,000 XEM... they might have to update that going forward.

XEM has a fixed supply.  ETH does not. Ripple is an unknown there. Didn't they just issue some?  I hear they're doing something with a lockup agreement to keep the supply in check.

The real question, the million dollar question if you will, if whether all of crypto is in a bubble, and if it is, how low will it go when it bursts? Since I already have the coin and I believe it's "less overvalued" than the other big name coins, I'll hold it for now.
540  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Multiple Bittrex accounts hacked everyone enable 2fa on: May 07, 2017, 01:54:50 PM
I just saw this thread. I lost BTC on Bittrex too when I inadvertently clicked on a site that looked like Bittrex after I had googled 'Bittrex'.

Basically I was phished, the login page looked exactly like the Bittrex login page and when I entered my PW and 2FA I noticed that the miscreant then also had access to my Bittrex account and had placed all of my altcoins on AutoSell, it was frightening watching all of my coins get sold by someone else in real time !.

I was lucky however, I just managed to insert my own BTC address from another exchange and transferred the resulting BTC to it before the miscreant could transfer them out, with less than a second to spare. I lost some BTC from the autoselling which sold my coins at a knock down price.

Of course, in hindsight I could have just blocked the account by clicking on the auto email sent when I logged in but I panicked and wasn't conscious of that option at that time.

That was a frightening experience and now I ALWAYS check that the exchange website is the correct one. I ALWAYS use the virtual keyboard in the OS, ALWAYS use 2FA and different PW's for all accounts, ALWAYS use a completely separate email for exchanges than for day to day correspondence.  Good luck out there, it's a dangerous world ! DD

I bought a 2D barcode scanner on ebay. You can get them used for 20-50 bucks.  I created a 32 character password that is random gibberish, put it on a QR code, laminated it, and that's my lastpass password.   All of my website passwords are random gibberish created from GRC's random generator and I don't know any of my passwords (except forums, they are set up on a way where I can type them in). The ones for these exchanges are probably 15-20 characters long. An example password would be "S,!60$9RF.UN`_=0P  Lastpass fills them in so any fake websites the lastpass won't detect the site as valid.

2 factor is enabled on everything. The backup QR codes are stored in my safe deposit box. My lastpass recovery email address is a dedicated gmail account with it's own 32 character password, also protected by 2 factor authentication. I don't store that password on lastpass.   Basically everything is as secure as I would make it. To steal my shit they'd need my 2 factor authentication device, an old droid phone, my qr codes, stored in my wallet, along with my lastpass login email address, and they'd have to get all this and use it before I had a change to go and change the passwords.   I already have backup replacement passwords ready hidden in an undisclosed location of my house. Everything's as secure as I can make it. Smiley
