That's akin to BobLawblaw demonstrating his magic gyroscopic physics to the world. In order to save the spinning ball he has to say that small gyroscopes don't exhibit the property of rigidity in space.

You can measure the rotation of the earth with a small gyroscope. It is just not easy you have to take great care to eliminate all sources of error you also need a setup that is accurate.

These folks from a university in Finland wrote up a nice paper on how to measure the Earth’s rotation rate using a low-cost MEMS Gyroscope small enough to fit on your desk.

Their set is a large acrylic dish, four feet wide and two across. It is filled with a nutritious agar jelly that contains varying amounts of an antibiotic. The outermost sections are free of the drug—a safe zone in which microbes can easily grow. But as they move towards the dish’s centre, the concentration of antibiotic goes up in 10-fold increments, and conditions become increasingly deadly. To survive in these toxic zones, they need to evolve resistance.

And that’s what they do. At the start of the video, bacteria are dropped into the edges of the dish and soon colonise the outer safe zones. Then they hit their first antibiotic wall, which halts their progress. After a few moments, bright spots appear at this frontier and start spreading outwards. These are resistant bacteria that have picked up mutations that allow them to shrug off the drug. They advance until they hit the next antibiotic zone. Another pause, until even more resistant strains evolve and invade further into the dish. By the end of the movie, even the centre-most stripe—the zone with the highest levels of killer chemicals—is colonised.

Am I doing this right ?

Yep

Strange strategy from the flat earth zealots in this thread. An utter failure to use critical thinking followed up with increasingly perverse insults. Perhaps we are all just being trolled?

I am not really surprised about the existence of a flat earth religion. Flat earth is an ancient misconception and humans have believed in far crazier things.
However, I am quite surprised to see it here.

Bitcoin usually tends to attract a more intelligent crowd.

You cannot really appreciate at curvature of the entire horizon with the naked eye until you get high enough. It does not get obvious until around 60,000 feet up but you can measure it well before then.

Ships do disappear over the curve but the horizon from sea level appears flat when they do.

Unless of course they really disappear because the kraken is guarding the edge of the world   Wink

Can we stay serious please?

Is already frustrating seeing so much questions without trusting what we are saying... don't lose focus!

Earth is Flat and they are teching us the Solar System model to hide God form us.

Thank You and may you live up to our potential.

Best regards.

PS: Kraken is a Bitcoin exchange
www.kraken.com

Haha just having a little fun I am pretty sure most of the flat earth advocates in this thread are.
However, you did ask nicely so ok.

Up-thread you have seen a few of the numerous experiments that can be done which refute the simple flat earth model.

These include:
1) The Coriolis force
2) The Cavendish Experiment
3) Eratosthenes' Calculation at various altitudes
4) The Michaelson Gale experiment

If you refuse to believe or repeat these experiments I have also highlighted the steps you can take to measure the earths curvature for yourself including how to accurately measure curvature from a photograph and low cost options for climbing to an altitude necessary to make this measurement.

Still want to believe the earth is actually flat for theological reasons? I have showed you a worldview you can adopt that will for allow this which does not require massive conspiracy theories and is consistent with logic and reason. You can believe that at a fundamental level the world is flat without rejecting all of modern science you just have to abandon the cartoon version of flat earth.

The layman's description of such a worldview is here:
http://motherboard.vice.com/read/there-is-growing-evidence-that-our-universe-is-a-giant-hologram

The scientific theory behind such a worldview is here:
http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/jmp/36/11/10.1063/1.531249
http://arxiv.org/abs/1001.3668
http://arxiv.org/abs/1410.4089

The worldview hypothesized by the physicists above above may or may not be true but unlike cartoon earth  it cannot be easily falsified by simple experiments and high school physics. It cannot be disproven and shrugged off for it is not currently falsifiable.

Or you can stick with blind faith in an icewall and dome. However, if we are using our imagination we might as well make it amusing and interesting for ourselves. Why not add the Kraken as well.    Smiley

P.S. A little off topic but you may want to stay away from the bitcoin exchange called Kraken. See:

incredibly, physicists across the world are thinking the same thing: That what we perceive to be a three-dimensional universe might just be the image of a two-dimensional one, projected across a massive cosmic horizon.
1454  Other / Off-topic / Re: Flat Earth on: September 10, 2016, 06:31:58 AM
There seems to be some misunderstanding about my point above.

Whenever there is a photograph showing curvature of the Earth several possible sources of error must be considered. Fish eye lenses would obviously distort an image. A more common problem is that virtually all camera lenses project an image that suffers from some barrel distortion.

If you want to accurately assess curvature from a photograph, the horizon must be placed precisely in the center of the image on the optical axis.  David K. Lynch published a paper a few years back on how to do this.

http://thulescientific.com/Lynch%20Curvature%202008.pdf

Lynch shows that below 35,000 feet the curvature of the earth is more or less undetectable to the naked eye. As one climbs higher it can be measured and he lays out exactly how to do this using a camera.

Soon those who believe the earth is flat will be able to see for themselves that their worldview is false.

Arizona-based World View Enterprises aims to start launching paying customers to the stratosphere in 2017 beneath a giant balloon, for $75,000 per seat. Passengers will spend two hours at an altitude of 100,000 feet (30,500 meters), where they'll be able to see the blackness of space and the curvature of Earth.

If 75k is too expensive you could always try the cheap method and do something along the lines of what this kid did.

A Totino-Grace High School student launched a weather balloon 20 miles into the atmosphere and captured incredible footage of the earth’s curvature. The experiment was on display at an exhibition on Sunday.

With the low cost option you might have some difficulty getting the horizon precisely in the center of the image on the optical axis but that problem could probably be overcome.
1455  Other / Off-topic / Re: Flat Earth on: September 09, 2016, 09:06:02 PM
<-- This is your proof the Earth is a ball? Have a nice day!

If you believe in flat earth you must already believe all photographic evidence is forged. You also have to reject most of science. Its all part of the global conspiracy right? We could go talk to that skydiver and ask him what he saw but if he says he saw a curvature he must be in on the scam right? Him and everyone else who has ever flown or ballooned to high altitudes.

Do you really think the entire world is acting in concert in a massive and global conspiracy just to fool you? People really have better things to do with their time.

I posted the photo simply to show you that it is possible to see for yourself with your own eyes that the world is not flat. Its would not be cheep but it is within the realm of the possible.

Unfortunately, however if you actually did fly to high altitudes it would shatter your worldview as you would see for yourself that the earth is very much not flat. Then you would have to choose between lying or denunciation by all your flat earth friends who would call you a traitor and sell out. Knowledge is not always cost free.

Right^^^. They don't have enough science behind their claims to make flat earth into a theory, let alone to prove that it is true.

What they have is a religion. It isn't a philosophy, because they don't philosophize about it. They simply have a bunch of beliefs that don't have a basis in fact or reality.

I am usually pretty hesitant to call something a religion but in this case I have to agree with you BADecker

With the Billions Quadzillions spen how come we dont have a photo showing the Globe earth.
Or have you got one? Dont try to find one at NASA they will tell you straight up that they dont have one, only cgi's.

You do not have to trust NASA.  If you are willing to spend the money you can go up in a balloon 24 miles and see the curvature of the earth for yourself. Like the guy who broke the skydiving record a few years back.

I did this so obviously I think it is a great idea.

However, instead of a paper wallet I purchased a physical bitcoin from here.
https://www.titanbtc.com/

Giving a paper wallet is a lot like giving someone cash its likely to be squandered on the first tempting thing.
A physical bitcoin has to be destroyed before spending the money (back pealed off) and thus I figure the recipient
is less likely to waste it.

No he is saying is that is that you cannot measure the rotation of the earth using small children's toy's. They are not a sensitive enough instrument.

It is possible to build a gyroscope that measures the rotation in real time but that is something of an undertaking.

http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/2011/oct/28/laser-gyroscope-measures-the-earths-wobble

You're implying that solid state gyroscopes such as the ring laser are the only kind suitable for testing if the Earth rotates, that's also a lot of bullshit. The experiment you're showcasing is purportedly to measure some subtle variation in Earth's so-called rotation. This is overkill for the simple task of testing for the presence of rotation.

I agree that this modern experiment I highlighted above is an overkill for the simple task of testing for the presence of rotation. Science has long moved passed that and is now measuring the small variations that occur in this rotation. BobLawblaw above already highlighted the Michelson-Gale experiment done almost a hundred years ago which tackled the simpler task of measuring the angular velocity of the Earth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelson%E2%80%93Gale%E2%80%93Pearson_experiment

Quote
The Michelson-Gale experiment was a very large ring interferometer, (a perimeter of 1.9 kilometer), large enough to detect the angular velocity of the Earth. The Michelson-Gale-Pearson version compared the light from a single source (carbon arc) after travelling in two directions. Light was sent into the rectangles, reflecting off mirrors at the corners, and returned to the starting point. Light exiting the two rectangles was compared on a screen just as the light returning from the two arms. The expected fringe shift in accordance with the stationary aether and special relativity ...In other words, this experiment was aimed to detect the Sagnac effect due to Earth's rotation.
...
The outcome of the experiment was that the angular velocity of the Earth as measured by astronomy was confirmed to within measuring accuracy.

Why Gyroscopes Proves the Flat Earth 2016

This proves nothing, other than the physical mechanics in the gyroscope are too small to be affected by the rotation of the Earth through space. Physics is working as intended.

The inertial frame is too small to be measured.
..
A little bit esoteric, but I recommend https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagnac_effect for further reading.

You're claiming Earth rotates but that it's a magical celestial rotation that doesn't effect gyroscopes? Go smoke another rock, I've provided hard evidence that there's no rotation.

Quote
A ring laser uses two single-mode laser beams that propagate around a closed laser cavity in opposing directions. If a ring laser is rotating, the two opposing waves are slightly shifted in frequency and a beat interference pattern is observed, which is proportional to the rate of rotation...

Thanks to the sensitivity and stability of large ring laser gyroscope, the team were able to directly measure the combined effect of the Chandler and the annual wobble of the freely rotating Earth. Their measured data was in excellent agreement with the independent measurements by using the astronomical method.

If allowed to fight with anyone who preaches atheism and obscurantism is why we defend the truth about the Flat Earth? Is there something in common.

There is nothing wrong with exploring alternative viewpoints and deploying logic and reason to support what you believe in.
However, that is not what I have seen in this thread.

Dogmatism is the tendency to lay down principles as incontrovertibly true, without evaluation or consideration of contradictory evidence. All of the arguments I have seen so far for Flat Earth are pure dogmatism. Flat Earth advocates believe that the world is flat without any real evidence. To make matters worse they have no coherent response to all of the contradictory evidence (and there is a lot) that falsifies Flat Earth. The believer of Flat Earth must close his eyes to science and empirical data. This is only possible if you dismiss all the conflicting data as falsified its proponents part of a global conspiracy or useful stooges.

The only ground I see in common is a willingness to question widely accepted beliefs which is a good trait. However, Flat Earth is easily falsified and if you choose to believe in something that is easily falsified others will not take you seriously. This is especially true if the best response you have such challenges are insults and links to YouTube videos.
