2481  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 02, 2023, 03:36:05 PM
Two consequences:
1.A  lot of bad FUD will come out of this story. "if even an OG bitcoin- core developer" cannot take his Bitcoin safe, who on Earth will be able to do so?"

That's the first thing I've thought about after reading achow101 reply stating that is is indeed real, this is just giving unlimited ammunition to critics, if the guy that helped develop the code, that for sure is more knowledgeable about risks and security, what about the uneducated that are risking everything, I can almost hear 1 million Helen Lovejoy screaming!

But I'm still not entirely convinced of this story, not because of the haking part, the coins moving etc, but this line in his tweet..

This feels like trolling, why would you tweet that? For sure he knows better than everyone how a complaint is filed and how you deal with it, but tweet about this?
But assuming this is real, stay away from bitcoin knots fro a while (I doubt that many were using it in the first place)

That's how you might verify that your Bitcoin Knots or Core download isn't infested with malware.
So to be clear: DO NOT DOWNLOAD BITCOIN KNOTS AND TRUST IT UNTIL THIS IS RESOLVED.
If you already did in the last few months, consider shutting that system down for now.

2482  Economy / Economics / Re: The Taste of an Economic Downturn on: January 01, 2023, 01:30:31 PM
Onion here is already hitting $12.57 a kilo.
~
I wonder, especially in other countries, how drastic is the change in your daily life that's brought about by this economic downturn?

Where do you live and what kind of giant secret recipe golden plated onions are those?

Walmart  (99.3 ¢/lb-$1.26/lb) that's max 3$ per kilo
Tesco uk 1-3 per kilp
Carrefour fr from 1-4

I feel we're talking about something else, but I'm still curious about what kind of onion is more expensive than pork ribs or loin here.

I know that although many are very much aware of the soaring inflation, nothing has changed much in their day to day lives.

Because in a lot of families not that much has changed, of course in some countries things are worse, but in some things are not that bad at all, it all comes to how much the individuals in those countries were spending on the items that increased:
https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/12/this-map-shows-how-much-each-country-spends-on-food/

Europeans that spent 10% on food with prices doubled, now they would have to pay 20% of their income.
For the countries on the bottom of that list, a doubling means from 40% to 80-90%, the same is for different families in the same country, if they had the means previously they won't feel the pain that much now either.

[...]
Lol. You're ridiculing every thread with legal tender as topic. Every single time.  Tongue

Well, there is this one...and I learned my lesson!

I always find myself in a conundrum with these, my instincts scream it's going to either be fake or a fail, it's obviously good news, it has to be done, it will probably be done sometime somewhere but at the same time I really hate what comes after it, people that have no clue about the said country will start claiming stuff like Salvador will be the richest in the universe, that somehow the laws of economics will be shredded and glued together in another way, to the point that I end up hating more the outcome that I yearn for it, so I end up like this, basically typing against something I actually wish for.
And as a side note, I should always make my reading and posting in the morning, definitely!  Cheesy

Quote
Where is your bitcoin balance at the end of the year?

I think everyone got this wrong!

You had to answer by telling where your balance is situated, so it's either in your smartphone that you carry always with you when you travel from home at 8 am from x location and arrive at work at 8:45 at y, or it's hidden in a paper wallet behind the picture int he living room at your address at zip code xxx, street, ..key under the mat or flower pot 2, or at Binance where you log in with username and pass xxx/yyy!

Is anyone willing to share this, I bet it would be far more interesting than some numbers in a screenshot!  Grin

What stands out to me, looking at these statistics is the fact that 85% of all value stored in Bitcoin is distributed among only 0.5% of addresses / owners.
That's an extreme imbalance of wealth. Nothing new or suprising but I think it's worth pointing out.

Because that's how everything works in reality and not in some socialist utopia some still dream about it even with crypto?
It's pretty simple, those who had thousands of dollars around with no other investment opportunities had a chance to buy tens of Bitcoins, and the poorest of the poor who can't even afford a smartphone will barely be able to count the satoshi they own in tens and hundred.

What makes it even more interesting is that while with fiat you could try and force a redistribution of wealth by just axing account balances, with Bitcoin is nearly impossible, my keys, my coins nothing you can do about it!

2485  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Can't we avoid reorgs once and for all? on: December 30, 2022, 05:21:06 PM
Example:
  • Assume we're at block height 700,000.
  • Miner A mines block 700,001: 0x00000000000000000002f39baabb00ffeb47dbdb425d5077baa62c47482b7e92
  • Miner B mines block 700,001: 0x000000000000000000010e76862af418f16ddb538f6f03ef7a7052b751d79b829 (hash is lower than A's, and therefore B has probably worked more)
  • Both miners broadcast their success at the same time.
  • All nodes will discard Miner A's block, because Miner B's block's hash is lower than A's.
  • Everyone works on top of Miner B's block.

Doesn't that drop the cost of reorgs to 0?

Just to be sure because I might this wrong, but in this case what will happen if
- Miners A and B mine block 700,002 (one of them does)
- Miner C mines his own blocks 700,001 and 02 with 01 having a lower hash than the previous block mined by miner B?

2486  Economy / Economics / Re: Passive Income? New Start-Up Would Pay you to Share Personal Data on: December 30, 2022, 05:02:06 PM
This is something I'd personally only do if I'm struggling and in dire need of money. I'd imagine most of their customers would be people in poorer countries.

How much you would pay for the spending habits of a guy who earns 200$ a month and only pays his bills and buys the cheapest food to support his family, somebody that doesn't eat at restaurants, hasn't set foot once in a cinema, and will need to work for 200 years straight to buy the cheapest car?
I think a lot of people exaggerate what their data is worth for those companies, look at what you're spending based on ads, think about what profit margin those guys have on a sale, and then decide how much they think you're worth.

Quote
For instance, a user could consent to sharing his ride-share history so advertisers could create segments of people who ride a certain amount. That would eventually pay consumers up to $50 a month, Caden said.

Yeah right, and who is going to pay 100$ because as obviously, this company will take half of that money for their 'help" to find out that x goes from y to z?
This is just wishful thinking, the said company could just hand 25$ in gift card money to customers that link their google maps profile to their app and it will get more customers and info about them than from such a deal! If a guy is willing to sell his uber history for 50$ he will sell his google maps for 50$ for sure.
2487  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How badly can natural disasters stop mining operations? on: December 30, 2022, 04:35:36 PM
Let's say that the difficulty adjustment (that I forgot to mention about TBH) takes place right after the hashrate has dropped significantly, won't the small miners still stand a chance at trying their hands on getting a block or more?

You can't have both!
If for nearly the whole difficulty you have 100% pace as the previous and on the last day you drop 50% of the hashrate the difference will be just 6%, if for example, we drop 75% you will have an adjustment of -20%, but you end up with 3 more days in the first period and a difficulty that is more than 3 times what you currently have, so it will take the small guys almost two months of running their gear to gain those 2016 blocks.
So, no, you won't make that much in the first adjustment, only when it will drop to the level that matches your hashrate would that happen.

But after two months of blocks every 40 minutes, how low do you think bitcoin would go in price?

2488  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has payment through Bitcoin helped El Salvador? on: December 30, 2022, 03:33:34 PM
Ok debunking time:

Pros:
The country's tourist ministry claims that since accepting bitcoin as legal tender, tourism in El Salvador has increased by more than 30%.

So, they just got back to pandemic levels, as did other countries in the region.
https://www.unwto.org/news/international-tourism-back-to-60-of-pre-pandemic-levels-in-january-july-2022

Quote
Among destinations reporting data on international arrivals in the first five to seven months of 2022, those exceeding pre-pandemic levels were: the US Virgin Islands (+32% over 2019), Albania (+19%), Saint Maarten (+15%), Ethiopia and Honduras (both +13%), Andorra (+10%), Puerto Rico (+7%), United Arab Emirates and Dominican Republic (both +3%), San Marino and El Salvador (both +1%) and Curaçao (0%).

After adopting the bitcoin law, El Salvador had a double-digit GDP increase for the first time in history, according to Nayib Bukele.

Same as the Dominican Republic, Honduras, or Nicaragua

Quote
El Salvador   -7.9%   10.3%
Dominican Republic   -6.7%   12.3%
Honduras   -9.0%   12.5%
Nicaragua   -2.0%   10.3%

In an effort to alleviate concerns about sustainability, Bukele claimed in June that he had given the state-owned geothermal power company LaGeo instructions to create a plan for providing bitcoin mining facilities utilising renewable energy from the nation's volcanoes.

Oh yeah, the famous volcano, except that...

Quote
BW Tatiana performed its very first ship-to-ship transfer of LNG in Acajutla, El Salvador together with LNG tanker Bilbao Knutsen. The milestone operation transferred around 125,000 cubic metres of LNG. The vessel is a part of the Acajutla FSRU project that is for exclusive use by Energía del Pacífico. The 378 megawatts Energía del Pacifíco power generation is the largest private infrastructure investment in El Salvador.
This FSRU is a part of the new technology solution. It includes Wärtsilä 50SG gas engines and a steam turbine cycle which will provide power for 30 per cent of the country’s electricity demand. Therefore, this is to transform the country into a net exporter of electric power instead of a net importer

So when you create the infrastructure to supply 30% of your electricity via gas-powered powerplants, isn't the whole volcano thing starting to look more like a lie or publicity stunt?

PS.
The cons are just as stupid, to blame bitcoin for crime in Salvador is just silly as for financial, common, Salvador was the poorest of the poor even before this.
2489  Economy / Economics / Re: Effect of the FIFA world cup on Qatar's economy on: December 30, 2022, 02:25:50 PM
Qatar spent over $200 billion preparing to host the FIFA 2022 world cup. They spent that money on constructing roads, airports, public spaces, stadiums, gas stations, and more. They constructed seven new stadiums and renovated one to make it eight stadiums for the world cup. The cost of building these stadiums has been estimated to be $6.5 billion. They spent $36 billion to construct the Doha metro, and for the Pearl accommodation complex, they spent $15 billion.

So if Jakarta which is ranked at the top in traffic congestion, has about 33 million poeple in the metro area decided to host some Olympics or World tournament and build another metro line at the same time, it will count as a thing they did just for FIFA, right?   Wink

Quote
$6.5 billion to $10 billion: The range of estimates on how much Qatar spent to build seven soccer stadiums for this year’s World Cup.

That's how much they've spent for the stadium, the rest is on infrastructure that most likely would have been built even if there would have been no world cup hosted ever. They've just taken the whole amount spent on infrastructure in the last 10 years and declared this was for the world cup, completely ignoring that other countries that have nearly the same characteristics,  like Singapore, are also spending insane amounts on those, Singapore spends 30 billion a year in infrastructure and has just issued another round of 90 billion for the exact same thing that is booed in Qatar, subway, rail, and many others.

For real now, they've included in these 200 billion even the sum spent on a new hospital!!!!

2490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as Legal tender plan by Fiji's new prime minister on: December 30, 2022, 01:44:59 PM
more and more small countries are thinking of making btc a legal tender.

Yeah, if we go by what Bitcoinmagazine claims with every single possible thing in this universe as a real deal already in place you will see thousands of countries, oh wait, million adopting bitcoin. Do you know how many of these bitcoin legal tender is imminent in x we had lately?

Paraguay to propose Bill that would make Bitcoin Legal Tender

and I'm tired of copy-pasting especially since I fell for the Lugano craze myself.

if it fails, they can easily go back to where they were. first or last, it doesn't matter.

Yeah, because forcing merchants to accept something they don't have a clue about, creating the infrastructure, employing and paying people to take care of the system to allow easy switch between currencies, and revamping the whole tax system is just a plug-and-play feature.
2491  Economy / Speculation / Re: I have dream This Chart On https://tradingview.com, Is This Correct? on: December 29, 2022, 06:00:42 PM
The moment you dream of a new chart every week it's probably the moment when you need to tell yourself to take a break and enjoy the holidays.  Wink
Overthinking daily stuff so much that you end up dreaming of them is a sign of real stress, and it's not a joking matter.
Anyhow, I find it quite interesting that between your two predictions the price moved exactly $11, you don't get this kind of occurrence, which basically tells you that nothing really happens only on expectations.

i'm xpecting more dump in coming days, on 25th we can se volitility to grab lp to hit SL,

Ok, here you got me totally confused, what are you expecting on the 25th, since today is the 29th?

PS.
Move this to speculation!

2492  Economy / Economics / Re: The fight over electric car batteries on: December 29, 2022, 05:26:28 PM
I'm sure it's the way I say it is, but it seems we have to agree to disagree. I don't have one at hand to record you a video.

Make sure in that video to record how many modes there are on that car because if it shows 7 I might ask again why did you say there are 4 yesterday  Wink
Common, you did it only to contradict me without knowing yourself how that car really looks, you fell for it, man up, and be done with it.

That's why I said you can compare ID.3 if you want. It's still much more expensive than the golf.

You started with the id4, get over with the id4, and don't switch cars as you fit just to try and avoid numbers.
Let's do the math for both cars now with the current! prices, current insurance, current tax, and current government bonus and see how this ends in 4 years of usage, are you up to it? Of course not, cause if you were you would have contradicted franky1 numbers!

Bruh, let me tell you this straight, this is bullshit and you know it too well.
You went for a sensationalist article without bothering to look at real prices!
Here is an example of a contract for exactly the town of Oud-Beijerland, with numbers that are half of what the article claims.

Just put a big banner in 100m red fonts with "electric cars suck" next time and be done with it, don't try to give the impression you're willing to debate or discuss numbers since you obviously don't want, you hate them and there is no way for anyone to convince you of anything else. So after the 3 out of 4 and 80cents/kwh I'm not trying it either anymore.
2493  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as Legal tender plan by Fiji's new prime minister on: December 29, 2022, 05:03:14 PM
I can't find anything in this article about Fiji prime minister saying anything publicly about making bitcoin legal tender. As a matter of fact, it looks more like a clickbait article based on a rumour started by a Tonga politician who claimed Fiji PM is pro-Bitcoin.

And as I should have gotten used by now, you read the title, you open the article and the two are a world apart.

Quote
While Rabuka himself hasn’t been very public about his opinions on Bitcoin thus far, Lord Fusitu'a, a noble and former member of parliament of neighboring nation Tonga, has reportedly confirmed that the Fijian politician is a bitcoin bull.

In others news, a former member of parliament from Guyana has info that the United States plans to make bitcoin legal tender.
This is starting to look like desperation, we have a guy labeled as a bitcoin bull who has never ever mentioned crypto or bitcoin in public before and I'm starting to think he is more surprised about that news than we are. Btw, I lost count of how many times "coup d'état " is mentioned on this guy's Wikipedia page.

That lord from Tonga is already old news, and every time he appears in the media, a new date appears when Bitcoin will be legal tender in his country -

Hihi
https://twitter.com/LordFusitua/status/1481101011506774016
How easy it sounded, and now from 1-2-3, clap clap one week he is back with late 2023.

2494  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin payment laundering in order to avoid taxation on: December 29, 2022, 03:42:38 PM
I think too many are focusing only on the spending part and not on the way they got these bitcoins in the first place.
He is getting paid in BTC  for services or products sold or offered by his company, which means that this must be a registered sale with an invoice, that it must be registered in his accounts, and not declaring it makes it tax evasion in the first place, and if he ever gets a thorough fiscal inspection they will see that there are products he purchased, he did not sell because he hasn't registered it and they have not been returned either,  so this will be the moment the nightmare begins.

In business relations, you always have to remember you're not alone, if a guy that has bought stuff for you thousands of dollars gets audited and when they check your books there is nothing there you're done for, no matter how cleverly you've been with spending those coins yourself.

Also, it would have been helpful to know what taxes are you looking at in your country for those payments and how many you think you can get because if your plan gets you an extra $50 without tax at the end of the month it's not worth even researching it, let alone doing it.

2495  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin debit card, no kyc on: December 29, 2022, 02:05:21 PM
Going through that medium article it seems like it has almost nothing to do with bitcoin, you end up with so many intermediaries that probably in case something happens you won't know who to call.

Quote
With the @v4vapp, we can use HIVE or HBD to pay Bitcoin Lightning invoices, which is what The Bitcoin Company generates for payments. Thus, we are able to spend HIVE or HBD on gift cards through the website.

So that article is more about how you want to spend some shitcoin than anything else.

Havent heard about the aforementioned website by you before. Is that company safe? I just went through their app on the playstore through the official link provided on their own site, and guess what? No reviews. I wouldn't trust such apps. If anyone even wants to try it out make sure you dont do it on your personal device, your privacy and security might be at risk.

They barely launched their business at the start of the year and didn't get any traction as it seems from the number of downloads, the apple store page has a few more reviews but I have the feeling those are written by the members of the team themselves, too many at the launch in late March early April and a huge pause after that. Even if it's a good product and not a scam if it has no usage you won't see any real feedback on it, and since they don't really offer anything new as the others mentioned, probably you won't see that many people using it from now on either.

2496  Economy / Economics / Re: The fight over electric car batteries on: December 29, 2022, 01:16:01 PM
You're saying it because you drove it, or read about it on the manufacturer's site?
There are 4 modes, but the "electric" is disabled until you warm up the car.
You can only start it in 3/4 modes and the electric becomes available after a while, so it doesn't allow you to drive straight out of the parking spot or your garage in electric mode.

You're saying that because you drove it or you read on the manufacturer's website?  Wink
The company that provides transport for us, airport shuttles, events, stuff like that has had for years two Sx50 hybrids, I know for sure those have 4 drive modes and I know for sure it can start and drive in full electric. Now, and this is where it becomes funny if I would have owned one or I would have gone to the manufacturer's website I would have known there are 7 drives modes out of which 6 are for driving from zero and one adaptive mode, so how did you get the 3 out 4? You realize at this point that you criticizing this model with your current knowledge is quite silly, right?

Quote
How many of these Porsche users are people who actually love the sound of the engine and would never sell their car to buy a new electric substitute? People who buy a car like that do it for various reasons, but being eco-friendly is not one of them.

Probably far fewer than you expect, noise is nothing without torque Wink
It's design, speed, handling, and not the noise that sells that car!

I used it to compare with the golf and and an electric car of similar size from the same manufacturer. It's obviously better to pay for more space, better looks, some useful features, than throw the same money into a silent running mode from a battery.

No, you didn't! Don't you realize how biased you are when you compare the id4 with a far small car when looking at the price and then you say it's better to have more room and more space when comparing it with a larger model that is, surprise not that large at all? Common, seriously I expected you to be far more objective on this!

You stick to the arbitrary things while ignoring the main thing that started this discussion and as much as it pains me to admit here I have to agree with franky1, you obviously and purposely toss aside numbers, ignore the running cost, ignore the average distance travel ignore everything bar the starting price, and this is no way of comparing two cars when you don't have an unlimited budget while stressing the decision is aimed at for saving money!

2497  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: When will Sam Bankman-Fried go to jail? on: December 28, 2022, 05:44:51 PM
I reckon Sam's lawyer can use this as a plead for a type of temporary insanity because he was under the influence of drugs.

He claimed battling depression in order to be released on bail, when you came to any kind of claim like this the judge will require you to go through an evaluation, which is quite common and it saves the court the trouble of another evaluation when the actual hearing starts as well. Neah, the insanity excuse has flown a long time ago, he can't play that card, especially since that would mean he was under the influence even during events like the testimony in Congress a year ago,  he won't go through something that can send him in more troubles, he will just say he was stupid, he made mistakes but he truly believed everything was fine, just like a kid would say he's sorry

2498  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Crypto exchange Kraken to stop operations in Japan on: December 28, 2022, 05:16:05 PM
The article isn't saying everything and the way it's written may mislead people.

Yeah, there is no reason to really panic, not only will those funds be accessible but also, quite funny, Kraken has a lot of experience in the field, this is the second time they are leaving Japan, after all, the first period they were active was 2014-2018, now it's 2020-2022, so probably in 2024 they will be offering their services again for a year, just in time for the halving!
Japan has some serious capital control laws, the whole MtGox fiasco has made them look for more regulations, higher security standards which are more costly for companies, with this bear market and probably lack of interest it's the obvious choice, you either adapt or you go out Celsius style!

Of curse, just because this might go smoothly it doesn't mean to trust Kraken with all your coins and leave them there for months!

2499  Economy / Reputation / Re: Please save me. I can't anymore. on: December 28, 2022, 04:52:17 PM
I recently started a discussion to see if I could get a more precise answer about how much bounty hunters manage to earn through campaigns. to ignore the fact that signature spammers littered the thread with nonsense, as far as I've seen from a couple of experiences, hunters have only made a few hundred dollars in the last year or two.

Damn, I was so curious about that but the whole thread was spammed with useless things, 90% of them ignored the two years in the title and went for the 2017 period like a magnet, some just avoided typing a number, damn, a ton of useless feedback, lucky there were two or three who could actually read and take the time to type something useful. I'm wondering what a moderated topic with a part-time McDonalds vs bounty payout question would look like, but probably it will scare away most real bounty hunters for which each post count.

Are these people in such a desperate situation that this forum is their lifeline, or is it some kind of special mentality that is difficult for most people to understand? Besides, is it so difficult to read the rules of the forum and act in accordance with them?

This is the main problem, and this is why we're wasting time trying to explain to some what they did wrong, we all see this in different ways, just as it was with the endless plagiarism debates. They think like this: If I can do the "work" the two persons could do, why shouldn't I be remunerated like two persons? The whole thing is that we start with the rules and act from there, they start with their own interest and see if they can find faults in the rules in order to bypass them.
It's like thinking that driving over the speed limit is wrong only when you get in an accident!
2500  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2022 Diff thread. on: December 28, 2022, 03:24:35 PM
Yesterday I took a quick look over at blockchair and it was showing ~120 blocks in the last 24 hours, now it's back to 146, with the storm almost gone I think as I see the worst hit town Buffalo is seeing only positive temperatures (Celsius) probably we're going back to normal or whatever we can call normal these days.

The current pace is -10%, sure good news for miners but for some, lol  Grin, not quite enough.

Taking into account that even with all the possible discounts and bulk rates keeping all the miners active I would end up paying for them a consolidated 14 cents per kwh from around the 5-6th of January I will shut down all but two of them that I have moved in the main basement already before Christmas.
So, it's going to be cleaning, packing, and probably most likely selling for BTC (I already feel bad for the guy who is taking over), do a bit of not so honest accounting, and declaring myself happy with the outcome depending on how I juggle with BTC vs Euro profits.   Grin
The most amazing thing is that I try to be sad about it but I feel more relieved than sad, looking back, man that was a pain in the ass! Funny at times, exciting, but a pain in the ass nevertheless.

In other non news,
Bitcoin Miner Argo Will Avoid Bankruptcy With $100M Bailout from Novogratz’s Galaxy
