1381  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Paxful or LocalBitcoins? Which one is better and why? on: October 19, 2019, 09:24:08 PM
I have also observed this. There find up to 100% above market price.

I do not know if it is attempted fraud or if it is really legitimate when it comes to the fact that many third world countries do not have access to bacaria and are experiencing severe crises.

a. sometimes it's because only small amounts are involved;
b. to compensate for the risk of fraud;
c. and yeah, there are a lot of fraudsters doing business on paxful, even with the ones with numerous positive reviews, if I googled their usernames, I'd see links to their profiles on carding or social engineering forums, so you might find out that whatever you received in exchange for BTC has been chargebacked/clawed back/blocked/etc.;
d. 3rd world countries with limited banking capabilities to send fiat in exchange for bitcoin is also one of the reasons, true.

P.S. no need embolden your entire post, use the tags if you feel the need to emphasize an important point.
1382  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance launched a P2P crypto trading platform, Alipay: Hold up.... on: October 19, 2019, 09:11:51 PM
I can't believe Binance were naive enough to think this could work.

Neither can I. If I could bet, I'd say they had some deal going on which fell through or someone important who has the say in the end said 'no'. It hurt their credibility to have situations like these occur.
1383  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie welcome video on: October 19, 2019, 07:14:02 PM
Nice that you took the initiative!

But as others said, it's too long, 2 minutes is the maximum length before a lot of people will start getting bored. Maybe it would be better if there were several 2 minute-long videos, each about a different aspect of the forum. I'll only ever watch something on YT for more than a 2-3 minutes if it's something that really interests me, or if it's something I have otherwise a strong motivation to listen/watch/learn about. For some Internet forum I just registered on, there's no way I'd spend >10 minutes staring at a screen. But maybe that's me, I don't mind reading stickies and whatnots if I register somewhere.
1384  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [~1 BTC Bounty] on: October 19, 2019, 06:00:22 PM
You could set aside one day out of the year where everyone can send in txs as a celebration to show their support of such things.

Sounds like a recipe for a lot of losses from double spending attacks Wink

It would be better if most nodes & miners decided to start accepting non-standard transactions for good.
1385  Economy / Gambling / Re: bustabit – The original crash game on: October 19, 2019, 05:58:21 PM
It seems to me that would be honest to gambling people to limit the maximum bet to 100,000 bits, if someone loses large sums it could ruin his life, I don’t think that the person can recover after a huge loss which is more than his wage which he can get for the whole life.

Someone could have enough coins left over from older days that betting tens of bitcoins at a given time is not an issue for them, if they feel like betting good for them and for bustabit's investors.

And they could still lose a lot of money with a series of smaller bets — as many do.

1386  Other / Meta / Re: 10th anniversary Satoshi... on: October 19, 2019, 05:08:20 PM
Because of the sudden disappearance (his last posts don't look like someone who's about to leave, I always assumed something bad must have happened. The best scenario I can think of would be jail, the worst scenario would be either an accident, or killed.

If Satoshi is a group of people, the sudden disappearance because of an accident or jail is much less likely. In that case "in hiding" would be a possible scenario, but I don't think Bitcoin was such a big deal back then so that doesn't make sense either.

He has communicated with a few other people as late as late April 2011:

https://plan99.net/~mike/satoshi-emails/thread5.html
https://nakamotostudies.org/emails/satoshis-final-email-to-gavin-andresen/

"I wish you wouldn’t keep talking about me as a mysterious shadowy figure the press just turns that into a pirate currency angle. [...]"

"I've moved on to other things.  It's in good hands with Gavin and everyone."

I think it's clear he is/was a very private person who left out of his own initiative.

The merit earned stats tab in the spreadsheet is a bit out of date, some users are no longer participating in the signature campaign, and new participants haven't been added: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17P52DifaD7YfvzLkX3wrxGVpKcaPHY4y57ZpI-FK754/edit#gid=1700332667

1388  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-10-18] ‘Trojanized’ Tor Browser steals Bitcoin from Darknet users on: October 19, 2019, 03:33:17 PM
If someone is using Tor, it doesn't mean that they are some l33t cypherpunks, it's likely just people who want to buy drugs online, and use that browser because that's the only way to access .onion sites.

True. Back when reddit still hosted various DNM subreddits, you could read people confessing what, when, and how they buy with bitcoins bought on Coinbase and sent straight to a DNM. Or thinking just adding a single hop with no mixer/coinjoin/whatever is enough.

Almost every time a DNM (or sometimes a DNM vendor) is taken down by some government's authorities, they can get many customers' personal information. Given the risks they're subjecting themselves to, a hell of a lot of people are as dumb as a sack of bricks.
1389  Economy / Gambling / Re: bustabit – The original crash game on: October 19, 2019, 02:53:26 PM
Yeah and considering there is a house edge in this game it means you will profit no matter what, there is absolutely no way you will lose money investing into this casino, sure you can lose if you get in and someone wins big and you get out, but as long as you stay as long as required you will always make money for sure.

That is the trick, you have to wait and if you wait enough eventually you will make money however some people get too afraid and leave too early and they may end up with some loss but the logic here is to have house edge on your favor (which we do) and wait, sure there could be times when profit goes down but in general there is literally no technical way that we don't make a profit, maybe there will be a huge loss one day but wait it out and you will be in profit for sure.

It's not guaranteed, a very rich gambler with a lucky streak can still wipe out the bankroll, even if it's unlikely at current max profit per bet to bankroll ratios. Or it may take very long time for the investors to recover their losses if for some reason the site loses popularity after a whale leaves with a lot of bitcoins. People who have offsite bankroll should be especially careful; 400 BTC left the offsite bankroll yesteday or so.
But as things stand, PredictableLegacy just lost 200 BTC.

1391  Other / Meta / Re: Project Development shouldn't be used as a way to announce your service. on: October 19, 2019, 12:36:35 PM
All three belong in Service Announcements because they're redirecting its potential customers to do business via their websites, except for Ethconomy which if it doesn't allow to pay with BTC should be moved to its altcoin equivalent of Service Announcements.

Rozwiniesz temat bardziej?

Double spending własnych monet zostałby szybko zauważony i społeczność podjęłaby odpowiednie kroki, aby wygryźć taki podmiot.
Równie dobrze można stracić, zwłaszcza że duzi gracze w BCH i SV mają dużo więcej do powiedzenia/wpływów niż w przypadku BTC.

1394  Other / Meta / Re: Re: 10th anniversary art contest on: October 19, 2019, 06:21:49 AM
Any art you post must be created by you.
Judging by the entries submitted so far, many of which seem to consist of the text "bitcointalk.org" or a Bitcoin logo slapped on an assembly of entirely unattributed Google image search results, I think there needs to be some clarification on this rule. Undecided

He didn't say 'created entirely by you', so they could be valid entries. Doesn't necessarily mean they'll be winning entries, though.
1395  Other / Meta / Re: 10th anniversary art contest on: October 19, 2019, 06:04:53 AM
Is anyone going to object if I submit on behalf of a minor? Person's art has actually already featured on this forum, and sold even. Would ask to get an own account and not that am aware of an age restriction here but. Person wouldn't be active anyway.

Seems that you could?

Any art you post must be created by you.
Can I bend this rule a bit and submit art made by my (toddler) daughter?
I asked her just yesterday if it's okay if I sell her artwork on the internet for Bitcoin, and she said yes. If I can get her to make anything Bitcoin related, this would be a great start of her art career.

Yes.

But as there are no restrictions on having an account here like on other websites, not that anyone would care anyway, just have them register if they're old enough they know how to read.
1396  Other / Meta / Re: 10th anniversary art contest on: October 18, 2019, 07:56:03 AM
Aw, man. I was actually secretly planning a special art piece for the 10th anniversary, and now you've ruined the surprise. Angry Anyway, since I assume the art has to be at least somewhat safe-for-work, I was going to ask: What is the official forum policy on nipple pasties? And does it vary depending on whether the nipples in question are female-presenting?

When in doubt post a link and mark it 'NSFW' instead of hotlinking, but I don't think it should be disallowed (worst case an admin or a global mod will just edit the post).
1397  Other / Meta / Re: Where is your new Bitcointalk? #RaiseYourVoice on: October 18, 2019, 04:49:02 AM
I'm fairly content staying where we currently are.

I have never been a fan of the new forum's main page design and every time new designs shift towards borderless, clean, minimalist aesthetics, it always ends up abysmal.

Let me fit one beloved webpage of mine towards the forum.

There is more to a forum than visuals, but I can agree, I'm also not a huge fan of 'minimalist' aesthetics. But I do like how posts' width is decreased, it's easier to read posts faster on a widescreen.
1398  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone here running any Bitcoin ATMs? on: October 18, 2019, 01:16:39 AM
In this case, it is so hard to implement it without the guidance of legal jurisdiction to support and provide some regulation with regards on this project.

The best 'guidance and regulation ' a government can provide is not do anything at all - live and let live. So far it's been working in countries with less oppressive laws. More oppressive countries have the police steal ATMs and arrest the operators, less oppressive ones have ATMs with lower fees.
1399  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone here running any Bitcoin ATMs? on: October 18, 2019, 01:00:57 AM
So keep an eye out in any train stations you go to

Or just zoom in on the map on coinatmaradar.com. The ones whose picture you posted are produced and operated by shitcoins.club but sometimes they call themselves 'Bitcoin Embassy' for one reason or another. Their fees are the lowest on the market if you want to sell, right now it's at only 0.016%. OTOH it's currently ~6% if you want to buy, so it's better to use a different ATM for that such as flyingatom which has lower fees (~3%). I don't think they sell their ATMs for 3rd parties to operate by themselves though.
1400  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone here running any Bitcoin ATMs? on: October 18, 2019, 12:33:39 AM
Have you already scouted out a place to park your ATM? I recently looked into opening up a Bitcoin ATM here in Singapore but came across two major issues.

First, some of the ATM suppliers have stipulations about how the Bitcoin ATM needs to be from other ATMs of the same time. Second, I found that practically all the major hotspots in my city were already covered with ATMs, meaning it would be slim pickins if I had to plant it outside of these areas.

Unless you can grab yourself some prime real estate for your BATM, you might struggle more than you think.

Maybe because Singapore is essentially a city-state, so it's easier for the market to get saturated? But to be fair it can happen with cities in other countries too, maybe it's better to compare cities with cities, especially in a bear market, when it takes longer to ROI.

I think the market for doing business with Bitcoin ATMs will one day be similar to that of vending machines - if there aren't any around, it probably means it's not profitable to run one in a given location.
