2761  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 24, 2014, 03:12:49 PM
In crypto, security can be achieved as a collective effort only, which is a scary thought only if one assumes that the majority (of users, computing power, etc.) is malicious.

That's a scary assumption too, but maybe a correct one.
2762  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 24, 2014, 02:59:38 PM
It was kinda nice to buy back in at not more than I sold off.  I was a little surprised that there wasn't a larger jump in price.  Which means (to me) the market never priced in the attack.

Or maybe it was artificially held up by some whales?

The attack was priced in. The weak hands dumped the price down to 290 or so. Most of us just have too much faith in our devs and community to dump every time there's FUD. If whales had any effect on the price, it was just from buying up cheap coins to make money, like many others did.

I'd expect the price to go up to 400+ within the next week, depending on the length of the FUD attack, then sink a bit as the market finds support. If the attack ends definitively and beneficially for XMR, I'd imagine we could see an even higher spike. Where the bitcoin price goes from here will also influence things.

Do yourselves a favor.
Buy as many Neos as you can.
Monero and ring signatures are no longer viable when anon is concerned.
It doesn't work guys. You can't just blindly stay with outdated tech

Jl777 himself said to be careful, that ring signatures might not work.

Invest at your own risk is what I think he said actually
In one ear and out the other = Major losses. Wake up people. Monero had it's run, don't get stuck with the bag.
You can see smart devs and investors are selling
I said that there could well be a way to deanonymize some tx, but that it should be something that can be fixed.

After intense scrutiny with the assumption that there is a fatal flaw, what was found was an exploit related to already known issues. It is still not determined how effective any attempt would be and in all the cases I heard about it was a small subset of affected tx.

As with any investment, do not have more than you can afford to lose and if you are losing sleep worrying about it, that is a sign you have too much exposure. Some diversification would be advisable.

If you are of a long term HODL mentality, nothing was found that kills cryptonotes. Also, keep in mind that any coin network can be attacked, this in an of itself does not mean much unless the attack creates permanent damage

James

P.S. I have no opinion on timewarp attacks or any other type of possible attack. If BCX has a time machine, then all coins are in trouble.

This just in: BCX has channeled all his hash power into a worm hole through which he can traverse space-time.
You have 72 hours to devise a defense.

Yawn.. this isn't nearly as entertaining as I thought it would be.

Is Monero being attacked or not? If someone is performing a TW attack is there any way to tell?

From my experience with time warps attacks it takes a couple of days before the symptoms start to occur, but when they do....the chaos is sweet.

~BCX~

Why is it sweet?

Because ice cream

Is it in yet?

That's what she said?

Yes - characters from the epic musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show would be appearing on your computer screen.

Proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg-vgGuTD8A

Careful. Next thing you know, the trolls  will be making threads about you.

"OMFG monero core dev fliffy says their gonna switch too a Proof of Rocky Horror Picture Show Algorithm"

2768  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: BitcoinEXpress (BCX) -> Monero Attack -> DOX on: September 23, 2014, 11:23:48 PM
BCX is a tragic person.
Wants power and does crime to get it.
Did the access to Cryptsy database give you a bigger epenis and strengthen your ego?

Hope Cryptsy owners stop licking your ass now since you are leaking out Gov ID's.

I am gonna make sure Cryptsy get in trouble for this and gets closed down by subpoena.

I'll never use Cryptsy again.

The death of Monero.

why are you such an asshole?

i don't get it.

Did monero devs rape your sister or something?

Now Bob, show me on the doll where Monero touched you.

Time Warp attack, as widely expected. It could always be a diversion though.

Central (Samar) and southern Philippines (Davao) are making big waves in crypto.  Cool

P.S. I had no affiliation with BCX other than messages on this forum past 2 days.

I was in Davao recently. It's quite a beautiful place!
2773  Other / Archival / Re: delete on: September 23, 2014, 07:27:15 PM
I am not in XMR because of the hardcore trolling that makes it seem more like a pump and dump.

This. A good coin doesn't require cheerleading squads and pumper bands beating the drum 24/7. A good coin is quiet and sells itself.

Coins don't talk - individuals do. In a community as large as Monero's, there are bound to be some idiots and trolls. There's nothing anyone can do about them since there's no moderation here.

Also, there are anti-monero trolls posing as pro-monero trolls, like Moneroman88.

I'm seeing strong buy signals still, bit I'm not ready to pop the champagne yet.
2775  Other / Archival / Re: delete on: September 23, 2014, 07:12:39 PM
It seems that Monero will not be able to fix the vulnerability in time.

I noticed today they added checkpoints in preparation for the attack: https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero

So.. what does this mean? Will the checkpoints sufficiently defend against the attack?

I know that checkpoints are used to defend against a 51% attack. I would assume they could be used to secure the chain from a TW exploit as well, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
2776  Other / Archival / Re: delete on: September 23, 2014, 07:11:11 PM
Fair enough. I am not in XMR because of the hardcore trolling that makes it seem more like a pump and dump. The arrogance of many involved with XMR comes off as desperation to me, but CZ and some of the others are keeping me interested enough to follow since they don't seem to be in it for a quick buck but to genuinely build something. Time will tell.

There are 10,000+ Monero users, and only a handful of trolls.

BCX, was that you in the polo chat under a different name?

For the record I did not DDOS Poloniex.

If I did I promise you I would have told you.

I have nothing against Poloniex and have no interest bothering them.

As was pointed out by a few other posters, this is not my style.

More than likely some poser that was going to try and get some coins out of you.

None of this meant to be a hostile action, I just want to see if XMR can fix their holes.

Anyone can knock down a coin by hitting an exchange. No fun in that.

Believe what you want to believe but anybody that has been here for any time knows, that wasn't me.

~BCX~

So someone "hacked" your Poloniex account?
2779  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: September 23, 2014, 01:08:24 PM
Judging from the recent XMR volume stats, not much of the buying is going on. I wonder if this whole thing about the attack wasn't contrived to buy some cheap XMR it could mean that the exploit is a real threat.

It's significant that the threats against XMR were made in the Poloniex trollbox, then Poloniex was DDOSed as a "test" last night.

I've been following all this since the beginning, and the whole thing looks like nothing more than an elaborate price manipulation scheme to me.

It's too quiet here today.
