I like "Rune". It's simple, easy to remember, and relatively easy to market. Also, I can imagine people actually using a cryptocurrency called "Rune" in the real world.

NO: "Your order comes to 4 Boolberries, ma'am."
YES: "Your order comes to 4 Runes, ma'am."

Also, your revulsion of "Rune" due to your subjective association of it with D&D and neckbeards says more about you than it does about the name itself.
2802  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: September 18, 2014, 04:06:19 PM
You can't have a successful project without adequate funding ..

Monero need to do like https://protonmail.ch/ and open a donations page towards the project, its pretty clear Monero is best privacy coin that exists, a new website with a project funding campaign will have great effects. But where is the new website??

I have been thinking on the coin-killer posts and the more I read it the more I smell BS, there is nothing proving it is more than FUD, if people are dumping because of this they will be sorry soon.

I like the idea of a page like that. With proper design and marketing, it could draw in donations from people outside of the current cryptocurrency ecosystem. There are plenty of privacy advocates, libertarians, technologists, etc. who are uninterested in the messy world of cryptocurrency "investment", but may nonetheless be willing to support what's marketed as a relatively NSA-proof, anonymous, very important, new technology. People should also be able to donate fiat.

Is it still profitable to mine?
2804  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero (XMR) Price Freefall on: September 18, 2014, 01:34:48 PM

Are there news about the exploit or is it still yesterdays story?

I'm new to Monero so I have heard nothing about an exploit. How does the exploit work?

There is no exploit. It was a FUD attempt.

The price hit bottom and is already rebounding.

Will Windows users notice any performance improvement in 7.0?
2807  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] OFFICIAL VOTE for Boolberry (BBR) Renaming/Rebranding! on: September 18, 2014, 12:52:10 PM
+1 Rune

I also agree with the previous posters who said "Ring" could be a good name as well.
2808  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: September 18, 2014, 12:40:48 PM
As a miner myself, I would support a small mining tax. We could see how a crowd funding approach works first though.
2809  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 17, 2014, 08:07:33 PM
As to credibility, he's found exploits before, and used them before. However, he also likes to come on the forum and pad his ego.
2810  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] Monero Unmoderated Trading advice/ Spec thread on: September 17, 2014, 05:37:20 PM
I am gratified to see that my parody account is an actual criminal.  I am hoping that the poster manages to provoke a warrant on BTCT.

It must be nice knowing that someone thinks so highly of you. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all.
2811  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: September 17, 2014, 02:11:49 AM
I saw this on the Anoncoin thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=227287.msg8828214#msg8828214

It sounds like their dev is getting close to integrating Zerocoin with Anoncoin. He says he'll have it ready in a month or two. How would Anoncoin/Zerocoin compare with Monero in terms of privacy and utility?

It would be irresponsible to speculate without details about what they are implementing, and how it is implemented.  I do not have those.

The original Zerocoin involved a very large blockchain, and was computationally intensive.  If it were similar, it would be subject to the same utility deficits and scaling bounds.  Transactions should be practically unlinkable and untracable, but I suspect ANC would operate in ZC and non-ZC modes (to deal with the limits of ZC), and depending on how the interface was implemented, this could create a large attack surface.  I would be loathe to transact in it until some substantive review.

I own some ANC as a hedge -I'm not terribly concerned about it as a threat to XMR holdings, but it offers an alternative in case of a catastrophic XMR failure.  Lack of documentation and lack of visible active development teamwork concerns me.  My impression is that one guy (an activist) hired one guy (a technologist) and we get the result.  Kudos to both of them for their effort, but unless it gains a community, I don't see much value-add there.  I'd advise to watch the blockchain for signs of vitality.

You can consider it an earnest upgrade effort, or you can consider it a 1.25mm coin pre-mine.  That's a subjective call, I think.

I largely agree with all that. I'd also add that AnonCoin has been around since June 13, 2013, practically an eternity in the altcoin world, yet has little to show for it. There's no infrastructure to speak of. The community seems to be passionate, but passion doesn't create code. At the current rate, it would take ANC several years to get to the same place Monero has taken a few months to get to. That said, I have a few ANC too, "just in case."
2812  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: IBM VP "We are forking Ethereum" on: September 16, 2014, 07:21:06 PM
That doesn't mean IBM is making their own cryptocurrency. IBM is probably forking it for their "internet of things" blockchain.

Yeah I think I saw him saying he was going to see what Monero did as it was pretty boring work.  Not sure if Monero is going to implement his fixes for trimming the data down or not.

One dev said that they will not. There are downsides to BBR's approach.
2814  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 16, 2014, 03:21:03 PM
I believe the network effect at this stage of the game is overblown.
Bitcoin has a $6.2 Billion market cap, which is peanuts. And the infrastructure consists of some amateurish exchanges, several large websites, some enthusiastic nerds, and maybe a few dozen ATMs.
2815  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 16, 2014, 03:08:32 PM
EDIT: It's a psychology thing. They either wanted to gain more BTC (rpietila admitted this and I did so too) and/or hedge on possible BTC failure. Are you kidding me? This is expressing so little faith in Monero, if an alt has any chance to succeed it needs fanatics who aim at No1.

Please link where I have said my aim is to gain more BTC? If I read my mind correctly, it has not been my aim since summer-13.

Hedge is something I have talked about. USDXMR in my understanding would immediately gain a lot if something serious happened to Bitcoin, making it a perfect hedge.

I also believe Monero has the chance of taking over Bitcoin.

I'm not being purposely difficult, and I believe that you mean what you say, but XMR will not take over from bitcoin. Or rather, if XMR takes over from bitcoin, it will be in a drastically different crypto market, in which the potential for cryptocurrency to becme mainstream had been reduced to near zero.

People, Joe and Jill Public, don't want cryptonote. They might go for another alt, but it will be easy to use and they will want to be able to track their money and to prove it to the authorities.

All cryptocurrencies are bordering on impossible to use for 95% of people. This will improve across the board in coming years. And really, I doubt any one coin will ever be much easier to use than the others.

I don't know of many people who would want the authorities to know about their transactions. Why do most brick and mortar businesses prefer dealing in cash? Because people prefer to cheat on their taxes if they know they can easily hide their income from the authorities.

Indeed. We're nearing the end of the golden age of Monero Mining.
2817  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Cryptocurrency with the best distribution? on: September 15, 2014, 07:49:07 PM
What do you think of MYR richlist?
I'm personally fairly impressed I could probably get in the 1000 richest addresses, and I currently hold only 4740!

MYR certainly deserves a place amongst the most well distributed coins. There was no premine and the coin has been free of scandals/scams/shadiness in general. It's easier to mine now than ever, and anyone with a PC could be mining significant quanities. And yes, it's very cheap now.
The downside seems to be a lack of direction and leadership. The devs are all competent enough, but it seems like each one is just working on his own pet project.

If Bryce Weiner pulls through on the Liberdade end, this coin could potentially explode. I think it's worth holding some just for that.
2818  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero FUD/Negativity Thread (Honest Discourse) on: September 15, 2014, 07:14:30 PM
I would like to start a real FUD thread for Monero.  I recently put some money in Monero.  Unlike many here I LIKE to understand what the "cons" to what I own are.  What's going to make it worthless?  I've seen a ton of negative and positive Monero threads but for the most part they are completely useless.  I have a few Monero shills on ignore.  I've also received flack when asking pointed questions.

I see little honest discourse.  These are the downsides I see.  I would like to hear more opinions on why Monero is "A broken pile of crap" and also opinions on why the following are true/untrue/not quite true.

1 - The original Cryptonote/Bytecoin devs are likely attacking Monero (see blockchain fork which didn't require a 51% attack - but a deep understanding of sourcecode)
2 - The original code contains unsafe / undocumented C code.
3 - The devs are moving rather slowly from a perspective of what other coins provide (No official GUI, blockchain is still loaded into memory, etc).  This is likely due to the Cryptonote (non bitcoin) codebase.  However it appears Zoidberg/BBR is moving faster in these areas than the Monero team.
4 - Monero is not user friendly.  At the point it becomes successful / gains market share it will likely be labelled as intentionally kept user unfriendly in the beginning to exclude non geeks.
5 - An outside entity had a period of a miner that was up to 5X faster than the publicly available miner.
6 - Arguably it's inflated price is due to being shamelessly pumped by bitcoin whales.  If/when they remove their support - it tanks.
7 - Blockchain bloat
8 - SuperNET chose the other primary Cryptonote coin.

*Monero is the only altcoin I own.  This is intended to be a high quality FUD thread.

If you want a decent discussion, you should probably have a moderated thread, as this thread is already 85% trolling/nonsense.

Anyway, as a Monero holder myself, here's what I think about the issues you raise:
1. Yes, and there will likely be more attacks in the future. The team has handled the attacks very swiftly and professionally so far though.
2. Yes, and hopefully they can get all that sorted out. Bringing in outside help like Peter Todd was a good idea.
3. Agreed
4. This seems like a non-issue. As far as I'm concerned, all crypto-currencies are virtually unusable to non-geeks right now anyway.
5. There have always been private miners, and mining programs with varying degrees of efficiency. Monero still had the fairest launch of any coin to date, as far as I'm aware.
6. The price has been approximately the same since launch. I don't know of any pump.
7. Blockchain bloat gets really overblown. The same arguments were being used against bitcoin several years ago. Decreasing memory/storage costs, increasing processing power, and unforeseen innovations will keep the blockchain manageable.
8. There are so many reasons not to join the SuperNet, this would require it's own post to explain properly, but (1) The Monero devs may not have wanted to join. It's not simply a matter of being chosen, the coin devs have to work with James. (2) He says that he need so work out some "business" things with the coin devs. What he asks for may be unacceptable. (3) The Monero devs may be not want to give any control to an outside organization. (4) The SuperNet seems to be partially centralized and tied to at least one for-profit corporation. (5) Not enough details are known about James or the SuperNet project. (6) A relatively high market cap coin like Monero would see less benefit from the SuperNet. Monero is one of very few coins poised for explosive growth, and possibly even challenging bitcoin directly as the dominant crypto-currency.

I'm saying quite simply, sir, that you a scamming liar and your story is a fabrication.
Is that clear enough?

Are you some kind of Moron? You don't know anything about me. I, however, have learned something about you.

I think he quoted the wrong post.

The more I've thought about it, the more this last point seems possible.
Bitcoin seems to really be getting away from it's roots and is seemingly poised as a Visa/MasterCard competitor, rather than a currency competitor. Also, the fact that it's not truly anonymous makes it's utility as "e-cash" limited.

I would be absolutely shocked if the NSA and other 3-letter agencies didn't already have automated tools that make tracing bitcoin transactions back to individuals a trivial task. The IRS and other tax agencies around the globe won't be too far behind.
