101  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Video: Bitcoin 101 - What is Bitcoin? on: March 12, 2015, 07:08:17 PM
Very good video. We should create a central place that collects all beginner content.
102  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BTER.com hacked - 7170 BTC stolen [DON'T KEEP YOUR MONEY ON AN EXCHANGE] on: March 12, 2015, 07:04:55 PM
Good signs from the exchange indeed. I might get back trading there when they hit 1000btc volume with the altcoins..  Roll Eyes

That might be earlier than you think! 300 BTC already and with Fiat it is very close.
Alt-BTC trading (which is the market i'm referring to since thats the market that I trade) is only @150BTC

Meaning that i'm not counting the fiat market.

Ok, but even then its:

 Volume:
Fiat : $89043
BTC : ฿235
LTC : Ł4730

Pretty sick, compared to the sentiment of a week ago.

EDIT: Just realized that this also counts BTC/CNY. So you are right!
103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Would You Have Bid For The USMS Seized BTCs? on: March 12, 2015, 07:01:59 PM
I believe that anybody that would have bid below-market or at-market rates would not have won the auction. The alternative of buying 50,000 coins on the exchanges would drive the price way up, so bidders were already willing to pay at least market rate. In fact, it is possible that the recent rise is the result of auction losers buying on exchanges.

That assumes that there are people who want to buy 50000 coins and would have to otherwise buy on exchanges.

I am pretty sure that this is a rare case.

you are being very, very kind.

I'm guessing the USMS chose the avenue they traveled expecting to get about 50% to 70% LESS than the face value of the merchandise. If they wanted face value they would have sold it on the open market little by little like anyone else seeking face value.  The also could have advertised a minimum bid of $200 so that everyone knows they want face value plus.  But none of that happened because they knew they would not get it.  Not just because all of 2014 was a buyer's market, and not because if they sold everything at the same time in the public market they would OBVIOUSLY get less in the aggregate, but because no one in with that kind of money is buying wholesale quantity at retail prices -- it's a fire sale auction NO ONE in their right mind expects to pay anywhere close to "market" value for anything at a "must sell" auction.

Actually they always got close to face value in previous auctions of BTC. So maybe they did again this time.

My point was that above market is unlikely, close below market is very likely and even 10% away from market is pretty much impossible due to arbitrageurs.

What they reasonably expected to get and what they got could be two totally different things, every blind auction is a hail mary pass; you throw it because you want it to work not because you expect it to work and when it does connect you are as shocked as everyone else in the whole stadium.

Anyone in BTC market knows values could easily swing 15% in a week and 20% over the span of a month.  So would be unwise to make a blind wholesale bid of anything close to public market value.  If all of 2014 the market trend was down, down, down; only recently did it do an about-face and go up, up, u [stuck at $299].

So, you would NOT buy a big amount of BTC in one month at -20% if you had to pay for them today, with delivery in 1 month?
104  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: INVEST BITCOIN!!! on: March 12, 2015, 07:00:12 PM
WHERE CAN I TRUST 100% TO INVEST MY COINS for garentee payback
CAN ANY ONE SUGGEST ME ?

100% trust. Buy your coins trusting yourself 100% then keeping them in a wallet and making sure you have a backup and secured wallet. Save them for 6 to 8 months or longer and check price and sit on them and watch the price go up in time and that way you have a guaranteed pay back in the future if it goes up. Buy low sell high.  Eat, Sleep, Buy low, Sell high Repeat. Profit Smiley

Very true.

It is mindboggeling that most people don't think that bitcoin alone is a big investment. Are those people trying to invest their Google Stock? Like lending them out? If not, why not?
105  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: wot if blockchain got to 100 terabit wot then on: March 12, 2015, 06:58:23 PM
I believe a lot of the size is required for the security of the bitcoin network... I think that because this is needed we will find a way to work around the fact of size, maybe we will all use a wallet that doesnt require a blockchain download like electrum?

Not all can use a light wallet, because if noone uses full chain bitcoin can't work. So miners, wallet providers, service providers will always need full nodes. But that can be outsourced and sold via a company in the future.
106  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Guard your Bitcoin with Stainless Steel Cold Storage on: March 12, 2015, 06:56:21 PM
I recommend to diversify types of Bitcoin storage. There is no single solution working all-in-one.

- You can printout a bulk of paperwallets and for a safety reasons keep your Bip38_password within Cryptosteel.
- You can have several copies of paperwallets in different locations, but one StainlessSteel
- It is not clear if Cryptosteel can store a Master Seed - we are exploring this right now.
- You can use a Cryptosteel as a master book of passwords
- You can store any type of sentence you desire even a poem (additional letter-cards will be also available separately)

You can burry cryptosteel, keep it in strong box or safe, but also you can build it into a wall.
If it will save even one person life time savings, I would say, I reach my initial goal.
Keep in mind numbers of lost crypto-coins.

Here is the official thread -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=977486 <-

Why does cryptosteel have "true random numbers" while paper wallets don't? You can use the same process on both, right?

108  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many confirmations until i can re-send the money on: March 12, 2015, 06:51:35 PM
Technically you can spend unconfirmed coins, but some clients does not allow you to use unconfirmed coins. So, it's up to your client. Of course, it is safe to wait for at least one confirmation to be sure.

EDIT: Mycelium does not allow you to spend unconfirmed coins, while Electrum does. Haven't tested core/qt or other clients.

QT clients don't allow it. But electrum and mytrezor.com and blockchain.info do.
109  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: March 12, 2015, 06:49:27 PM
Was a fun 48 hours in swap-land, but now the FRR appears to have re-asserted itself and rebuilt the wall.

Still hopeful that there might be another spike, but I feel like the default assumption now (going by past form) is that the rate is going to rapidly decay back towards the prior lows. Or at least some low-point to asymptotically trend towards.

USD swaps have been fun, shame BTC swaps are so low though.

BTC rates only spike in a very drastic downturn. Even then the rates are only high for a few days until people stock up their accounts and provide BTC swaps.
110  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: March 12, 2015, 06:48:43 PM
Does anyone know why the Bitfinex facebook page is so inactive?
https://www.facebook.com/bitfinex

Last post was in June 2014. Is it not an official page?

Location is set to Lyon, France which is quite odd, considering Bitfinex is in Hong Kong.

I read that they don't do social media at all. That is why you won't find any links from them on the website.
111  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfenix Verification? Why do they need so much personal info? on: March 12, 2015, 06:47:10 PM
Bitfinex does have the strictest verification I have come across from all exchanges I have tried so far.
This is however to future proof them from any regulatory KYC/AML requirements at a future date.
It is better that they comply now, rather than risk being shut down, and potentially losing millions. No one wants that!

I found the verification process, strict, but it was all processed very quickly.

It is indeed strict, but they act very professionally. I still prefer Bitfinex over most other exchanges.
112  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Does martingale really works? on: March 12, 2015, 06:45:56 PM
I have tried some times and I can say I'm in loss with martingale, so it's not for me
its better to do all in on 50 % chance as doing martingale makes the house edge bigger when you roll bunch of times. i never use this strategy

Apparently this is not true. You can actually "lower" the house edge if you bet with a certain strategy other than 50% bet. There was a long discussing on previous pages.

114  Economy / Economics / Re: How would a world with BTC as reserve currency look like? on: March 12, 2015, 06:25:58 PM
Why does the general consensus seem to be that there would not be debt based govt money?
115  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Does martingale really works? on: March 12, 2015, 06:17:27 PM
To be able to see the server seed means that it's an inside job or some intruder compromised the website and took advantage of the system?

cant tell for sure if it is an inside job, but it is an intruder compromised, which enable him to few the next rolls, making him able to determine the outcome of the game

if you know the unhashed seed, you can just change your seed so that you will win every bet. Or you can just alter hi/lo and then win every bet.
116  Economy / Economics / Re: How would a world with BTC as reserve currency look like? on: March 12, 2015, 04:06:20 PM
That would bring huge changes, with countries unable to run a deficit.

That would call for an entire new class of politicians, as those who are in power now have no idea of what a balanced budget is.

You could still borrow BTC. Or work with a token that could be redeemed for  BTC.

Govt will always be running some kind of fractional reserve. Don't you think?
117  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BTER.com hacked - 7170 BTC stolen [DON'T KEEP YOUR MONEY ON AN EXCHANGE] on: March 12, 2015, 03:59:55 PM
BTC_B/BTC market

Is a good idea.

AFA the post saying BTER can use it to generate more fee's, Good all those fee's are going to repay stolen BTC and fee's are suspended for a month anyway.

For some reason I doubt BTER is monitoring this thread so anyone even remotely connected to them should link this idea to them.

Also

I got a support response withing a few hours yesterday. Although it was the same chinese not understanding the question shit.

I will contact them and ask for adding of that market.
118  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BTER.com hacked - 7170 BTC stolen [DON'T KEEP YOUR MONEY ON AN EXCHANGE] on: March 12, 2015, 03:31:34 PM
They should open a BTC_B/BTC market.  Customers with coins lost in the hack can sell their BTC_B at a discount to speculators banking on Bter making good on repaying them eventually.

Fully support idea of btc_b/btc market.

It may turn out in the end, that bter may like the idea of these virtual bitcoins, and their total amount will be higher than the number of actually stolen btc. If it increases turnover, raises liquidity and brings profit, why dispose of a working device?

Valid point.

It could become so successful, that Bter may purposely delay further repayments simply to milk the market for more trading fees.  Also, rather than directly paying back all the BTC, it would be advantageous of them to secretly buy up BTC_B at a discount on the open market.  Now that I start to think about it, there are a plethora of ways a system like this could be abused by Bter.   It would require trusting them, and trust is not exactly a commodity they are holding in abundance at the moment.

What if the BTC_B were made into a token on Counterparty or NXT?  It would allow trading to be trustless and completely transparent.

I've got no skin in this.  I just wandered in here because the GAW thread has been a bit slow lately.  So it's up to you guys really.  If you demand a way to make BTC_B liquid so you can sell off the risk to speculators, there are ways to make it happen but demand it loud and clear so Bter can't avoid listening.

EDIT : There really isn't a way to stop Bter from buying up BTC_B on a decentralized market either.  I don't know, it sounded like a good idea at first but it may be an unworkable solution.

It is still a good solution. In reality it doesn't matter who buys the tokens from you. In the end BTER will have to spend BTC to make up the lost funds, this way they just save money because the speculators don't get their cut.
