starting lesson 5 of http://learnpythonthehardway.org/

so far so good.

Good luck!  I'm still learning python myself.  I'm still trying to figure out why I need dictionaries and arrays and junk, but I've otherwise been doing ok, making simple text games with different rooms.

For me, this is what really got me questioning government.  The manual for human farming is another good one, albeit very long.

I believe WW3 will be the result of America attempting to ensure their USD stays the world reserve currency.
1664  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin, Fiat and Aliens! on: August 03, 2013, 03:53:19 PM
Assuming the aliens are friendly, if they have the technology to travel around the universe willy nilly, there's likely nothing we have on our planet that won't be found for free on other planets, or cannot be created by the aliens themselves.  At best, the aliens might offer us something in exchange for the ability to study us--so the question is, what would the aliens give us that we would want?
1665  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Rise in violence 'linked to climate change' on: August 03, 2013, 03:34:50 PM
I would go as far to say that critical thinking is the one must productive topics to master to become a more rounded human being, genuine life changing stuff.

Agreed.  Rational thought should be the very first thing people learn after understanding their native language and before being forced through years of school without any clue why they can't figure anything but what they'll wear that day and if that hot girl/guy in their 3rd period class will notice them--but I digress.

If you can find someone who wants them, they can trade their BTC for it.
1667  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is Bitcoin illegal in Thailand? on: August 03, 2013, 03:02:47 PM
What's with all the drama?

AFAIK the Thailand government hasn't done anything with Bitcoin, nor do they have any plans as to how they would attempt to ban it.  The only thing we know is that the Bank of Thailand supposedly blocked a Thai BTC exchange from operating correctly, and so was closed down.  Unless that bank is also their ministry of finance, then Bitcoin is not officially banned in Thailand; this is the same behavior we're seeing in America, where banks are getting uppity about people and services who operate in and around Bitcoin.
1668  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Rise in violence 'linked to climate change' on: August 02, 2013, 02:26:21 AM
I guess I can see this happening.  I can't say I've ever been put in a great mood being out in the heat, but how anyone can find the energy to rape in 100F weather is beyond me.
1669  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Morality is a guilt trip on: August 02, 2013, 02:22:45 AM
I'm not sure.  I believe morality is masked self-interest.  If all of us are better off, I'll be way better off.  If there is ever a situation in which either you or I must die to continue living, I will die, because I'd rather take the very slim chance of there being an afterlife than deal with a real living Hell.
1670  Other / Off-topic / Re: What do you think about money? on: August 02, 2013, 12:03:17 AM
Money is nothing but a store of energy.  Instead of working now for that slice of pizza, I can work now for money, and then trade it with whomever, whenever, for whatever I want.  This is precisely why I don't like fiat; there's nowhere to go but down, and in a set amount of years, the work I did in the past will have been for nothing; stolen energy, a waste of time, and I value my time pretty fucking well, since it's limited in supply and I have no idea how much of it I will ever have.
1671  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Family is visited by 6 armed men after Googling backpacks and pressure cookers on: August 01, 2013, 11:48:10 PM
The photo isn't of the occurrence, and they mixed up federal agents with...well, whoever they think made the visit, now.  Commenters are just gobbling this shit up.  I'm normally skeptical about anything, but come on; they could have just a tiny bit of doubt.

Anyway, lets take a look into my imaginary crystal ball.  The next presidential election is going to feature a man (literally two men, but they'll be the same guy) who promises clean the country up and get rid of all this debt and can the NSA, and protect all your freedoms and liberties and privacy, and shortly after he gets into office (doesn't matter if he's a repub or demo, they're basically the same thing, but chances are it'll be a repub 'cos they have 8 years to bitch about now) there will be another war, and the problems he aimed to solve will have seemingly gotten better on the surface to distract from this war, through manipulation of the press and what have you, but will have gotten far, far worse to anyone who can take the time to read more than a headline or do some research outside of the liberal/conservative journal fuckfest.  The republicans will bitch about the democrats and the democrats will bitch about the republicans, the debt will pile up, the government will ask for more power to solve their problems (and by ask I mean, take, since not even the NSA can be touched by the wonder of representative democracy; and by their problems, I mean theirs, not mine or yours) and anyone with any sense left will take that redneck's advice and get the hell out of his country, because the only patriots left in America by then will be saying a new version of "Sieg heil!" or supporting them through the quasi-socialist regime (likely to be named alongside freedom or liberty) brought about as a response to this war, which nobody, especially not the people who want to war, can afford, but fuck it, Americans couldn't stand against this war, why would they stand against the next?
1672  Other / Off-topic / Re: Any Legit ways to make money online? on: August 01, 2013, 04:16:42 AM
I've been making some extra money by selling my painting skills.  But if you don't have any skills that can be translated over the web, you'll have to stick to doing old fashioned work IRL.
1673  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Porter Stansberry Alert on: August 01, 2013, 01:37:27 AM
Great presentation by Stansberry. Should be viewed by anyone who wants the big picture.

Makes me even more Bitcoin bullish (which I didn't think was possible  Smiley)

More than that, it makes me want to leave the country entirely Tongue  No doubt BTC will see a surge, along with the PMs, but I wanna live to see it!

I don't know what America's going to do, but it's certainly not going to sit on the world's most expensive military and do nothing while its dollar collapses.  Germany may not have been successful back then, but I doubt that'll stop a government as desperate as this one.

It moves along slowly (first five minutes play out like an infomercial which, ironically, has no information except "Stick around and learn these secrets absolutely free!"), but it was very informative.  The end is mostly an advertisement for their service.

Woah.
So there are 2 admins now? Or more?

I believe there are three, one was backup when Theymos couldn't be around, but now John makes three.
1679  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Entitlement Mentality on: July 31, 2013, 11:15:14 PM
If the workers get paid more, the businesses would just charge more for their product to compensate for the loss (in other words, they take the cost out on the customer.)  However, there's a certain point where people just don't want to pay for a very bland, but expensive combo meal (and that number is usually close to where it already is,) and so the only solution in the eyes of the business would be to either ignore the protestors and hire other people who are willing to work for even less, or to give into doubling the worker's pay while halving the number of workers, which isn't always feasible.  The last thing that'll happen is for the rich cats up top to give up their salaries to ensure their business stays alive and their workers are getting a wage well above the national minimum; they'd sooner abandon ship than do that.

Nothing wrong with protesting, but expressing oneself only matters to those who care, and rich people you've never met don't count among them; they're paid best when they don't care, and that's the single most important interest to a business: maximizing profits.  This is all very normal in capitalism.  The only way to improve the worker's quality of wage and life are to replace the chains with mom & pop type stores, where there's no massive corporate overhead to pay, which I predict would flatten out the wealth and spread it more evenly, but I don't see this happening soon.
1680  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Mainstream Media is a Hoax on: July 26, 2013, 04:36:17 AM
Exactly.

I'm glad we agree.  Once you point out the spot where I used ad hominem against a person to argue for a point or against another point, I'll be happy to concede that your last response was entirely correct.
