We don't know that yet, but I agree, an almost 400% price hike is ridiculous. I don't think many people would venture for such an expense, especially after tens of terahashes were added to the network and tens more will be added by the time they get their units.

Is that $5000+ price definitive?

Looks like a bit of a radical hike to me. But I will believe they would set that price when I see it, to be honest.

Also, I'd have to pay VAT on top of that. I think I'd pass.

$1600 and I'm in.

Good luck to everybody.

Si, es definitivo.

Another option is to have an auction, top 300 bid get the units.
There might also be a limit for how many 1 person could buy.
But it's not my business, and the way he runs his own business has produced the first product to market.

I try to be respectful and informed.

The units are being sold into a market at which demand vastly outstrips supply.

If sold at auction, the price would be even higher.

jgarzik,

I am and i will be avalon fan mostly because of NG - his skills and work. But i do not agree with your words about auction. If batch 3 consists of 3 units only then sure the price may reach heaven. but for 300-500? Who knows. Anyway it is a free market and we the customers will decide if we buy or not. For sure demand vastly outstrips supply no doubt about that. From what i can see here most of the guy's can take 2000-2500 including me. But 5000?
I am out for batch 3. Good luck to everyone else Smiley
And i love my new toy !!!

Let them auction then.

I know how much I would bid, and it's not 5000. Bids would go down with rising difficulty, instead of going up.

Same here. Import VAT is 25%, so at $5000 this would be a scary investment, and I don't like to gamble.

Yep, I'd be paying in VAT more than batch #1 and #2 paid in total. And with little chance of recouping the investment as difficulty shoots sky-high.

Christ, I was thinking about buying one, but for that price I can get tons more litecoin mining rigs (enough to make about $150 per day) today.

By the time batch #3 arrives, the value of 88 btc's will probably be closer to $10,000 than $5000. If difficulty doubles from batch #2, and 64 gigahash nets ~20 btcs/week, it would take about 4-6 weeks to recoup investment. That is, assuming no other ASIC's enter market apart from 600 new avalons in batch #3, which would probably push difficulty to 15mil after 2 weeks from first shipments.

It's nerve-wracking how the exploding bitcoin valuation is creating such risky yet lucrative investments, but what can you do? Wait for BFL? Tongue

I would have no problem with this pricing provided 2 things:

1) The delivered power is at least 2x than batch 1 and  batch 2.
Or
2) Properly working Batch 2 order process - I wanted to buy 2 units, but got "Not in stock" early in the morning, when I checked again after noon all has gone.

Therefore pulling it myself currently too much of a gamble (even bigger then Batch 1 and Batch 2, due to constant delays in shipment), but if someone wants to pool BTC's with me (we will need to sort out where we going to store it), he/she is welcome to PM.

Where are people seeing this $5000 price? I've checked their site out and don't see anything that says $5000. If anything all I get is a prompt asking me for a password.

First batch customers had the same thoughts, and even worse.

First batch customers gambled less money ($) with much more future profits.

That is simply not true.
