Interesting idea, trying it out.

There's a great documentary out there called JFK, and it clearly demonstrates that "man, you don't leave the Agency. Once you in, they got you for life." You guys should check it out.

1384  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Minimum fee-free transaction (split from 0.3.21 discussion) on: April 29, 2011, 07:59:37 AM
Are there any immediate plans to lower the minimum fee-free transaction and minimum transaction fee, now that the valuation of 1 BTC has risen well above that of 2 USD? This is starting to look like a priority---I'd consider it urgent once we pass 5 USD, and actually I'd like to see it lowered by two orders of magnitude rather than one.

There seems to be general agreement that the 0.01 limit must be lowered.

"When?" and "To what?" remain open questions.

Yes, the "no/low fee" benefit being touted is quickly becoming moot.

1387  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we prevent money laundering and assasinations? on: April 27, 2011, 02:53:56 AM
It's absurd to absolve the corrupting systems of money, government and religion of the actions people make while being forced to operate within their confines.

Wrong. You blame the individual, not the tool. You could not pay me enough money, give me enough power over others, or threaten me with the wrath of any god to convince me to commit murder, theft, or any other immoral act against my fellow man. If I can rise above the confines of these systems, anyone can.

Blaming the tool shifts the focus from the real actors, and practically absolves them of their misdeeds.

"Yes, he committed atrocities, but he did it in the name of his god, he can't be held fully accountable."

"Ahh, but he was poor, and offered such a large sum, who wouldn't have done the same in his place?"

"Of course he voted to go to war, he would have been ostracized by his own party had he not."

Baloney.

If you fear the consequences of negative actions, remove the impetus for those actions. People are violent because they have not been given better tools to deal with conflict. People resort to religious beliefs because they did not learn sufficient reasoning and social skills. Politics are immersed in corruption because everything is for sale in a monetary system. You can't talk about individual actions outside of the context in which they are conditioned, and to do so is to excuse the various systems and actions that produce their behavior.

Edit: Unless of course you are asserting that people will do these things because it is part of their essential "nature", in which case there can be no discussion on how to prevent such behavior, rendering the initial question moot.
1388  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we prevent money laundering and assasinations? on: April 25, 2011, 06:30:56 PM
Money can absolutely be used for crime, too, despite some notes I've seen in these forums to the contrary.  Someone said, the other day, something like, "Guns and violence hurt people; money doesn't."  What about the money used to bribe policemen to look the other way when there are guns and violence applied against innocents?

Let's clear something up. People hurt people. It's downright silly to demonize a tool. Pencils don't make spelling errors. Guns don't shoot people. And money doesn't sell drugs. People do all of these things. If you take the tools away from the bad, you take the tools away from the good as well. Shall we destroy the internet because some use it for child pornography? Ban hard drives because such files can be stored there? No, absolutely not. It would be ridiculous.

It's absurd seeing people blaming tools for the actions of people. I promise you this, take away the tool that you pose as evil, and the evil person will find another way to commit his atrocities.

It's absurd to absolve the corrupting systems of money, government and religion of the actions people make while being forced to operate within their confines.

There will be no significant change in criminal or aberrant activity while we perpetuate a monetary system. When people are denied the necessities of life, and can only obtain them by engaging in a dishonest, abusive, wasteful and violent monetary system, then you get dishonest, abusive, wasteful and violent activity.

No offense, but isn't that magical "halo" thinking?

No.

1391  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcon! When and Where? on: April 25, 2011, 05:00:43 AM
You forgot:   "Why?"

I think this forum is sufficient enough.  We don't need to waste money and energy for physical meetings.

True enough. Maybe a Teamspeak meeting or something.

We should probably wait until phone clients are more common really. It would be impractical to have a convention where everyone has to whip out a laptop to transact. I'm sure the bitcoin ATM machine would be there too.
1392  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BTCMine - mining pool (GPU/CPU miners friendly, LongPolling, JSON API) on: April 25, 2011, 04:57:38 AM
If the new beta client is any indication, fees will become far more common. I had to pay a fee for a .05 transaction yesterday.
1393  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcon! When and Where? on: April 25, 2011, 02:33:44 AM
Apparently there was a recent hijacking attempt in a Paris-Rome flight, so heightened security measures would be likely for international travel in the near future.

Maybe it will have to start as a mini-con inside of or close to another con such as Defcon or Blackhat or the like.
1394  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [UPDATED] BitCon! NOW BEING ORGANIZED! on: April 25, 2011, 01:14:54 AM
So who is interested in a global Bitcoin Conference (BitCon)? I noticed a few local meetups, but I think sooner or later, a global meetup will occur. When should it be? Where should it be?

I think it should be in middle America or the West coast so Plato doesn't have to drive all the way back to NYC to attend.

The folks at the Bitcoin Show are organizing it! Check it out at http://bitcoinme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=9.

Wish I could go.
1395  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: feedback on preliminary draft of legal paper on: April 24, 2011, 07:02:45 PM
The protocol defines a BitCoin value as an int64, constrained by the following constants:

static const int64 COIN = 100000000;
static const int64 CENT = 1000000;
static const int64 MAX_MONEY = 21000000 * COIN;

As you can see, the maximum representable amount is 21000000 * 100000000 = 2.1*10^15, a very large number to be sure but by no means infinite.

Changing the int64 to something larger would be very difficult. Every single piece of software that speaks the BitCoin protocol would need to be upgraded. If IPv6 is any indication it'd be a extraordinary multi-decade effort, perhaps it'll even never happen. I wouldn't describe it as trivial even today ...

Fortunately, MAX_MONEY is a really huge number. According to Wikipedia the US "base" currency supply (notes and coins) is approximately a trillion dollars. A trillion is 1*10^12. The maximum amount of coins is 2.1 quadrillion BTC. So representing all the printed/minted dollars in the world would be no issue.

USDv6! I like that!
1396  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: RPC Miners (CPU/4way/CUDA/OpenCL) on: April 24, 2011, 12:24:43 AM
Is it possible to modify the thread priority on RPC4Way to idle? It's causing difficulties with other programs trying to run at the same time while it is using all available cycles at normal priority.

How many of you REAL MEN would put 95% of your entire life, solemnly and nearly absolutely swear on Bitcoin and its success? How many of you?

As for me, I do.

Who else?

It's a good thing we're excluding women, I hear they have cooties.

Waiting for a reply from Atlas for an auction I've won at BiddingPond. http://www.biddingpond.com/item.php?id=381

Edit: I have been in contact with him and have come to an agreement. I am attempting to pay him through the Biddingpond site. I hope that goes well.

Edit2: Ok, obviously I have severely misunderstood how to pay someone on Biddingpond and might not have sent BTC to the person I intended to. Hopefully this is cleared up soon.

Edit3: Cleared up! Things going well.

I had the same exact problem biddingpond really does make it confusing he should change the pay now button or at least better explain it.

That site needs everything to be better explained. I appreciate the work that has already been done there, but there is a lot of improvement that needs to take place also.

To be fair, they did respond quickly when I sent emails to them regarding my payment issues and handled it very well.
