501  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: November 06, 2012, 02:02:30 PM
But why not let non-members read about the useful work the foundation is doing rather than restricting read access and adding fuel to the fire about non-transparency, an insider cabal etc.
Somebody could sign up as a member and then try to screen-scrape and republish everything somewhere, so members should assume that whatever they say will eventually be public.

 Wink

This is why the smoke filled room was invented. Get with the program people! If you're going to subvert everything good about bitcoin, at least do it in absolute secrecy.
502  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] BitcoinStore.com (Beta) - Electronics super store with over 500K items! on: November 03, 2012, 07:46:12 AM
Price range links don't seem to work. In fact, categorization in general doesn't seem to be correct at all.
503  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: November 03, 2012, 05:38:26 AM
As Gavin said, absolutely nothing is secret about a place where you can pay 3 bitcoins and gain yearly access. It is a small amount to pay if you are even remotely interested in bitcoins future, and does serve as a filter to prevent blatant rules abuse. Elitist for 30$? Sorry, SanFrancisco bums laugh at you.

Have fun in your little club, cause when Mark and Charlie have BUSINESS SEATS that have no checks and balances for 2 YEARS, that scares me and should scare everyone else. Cause right now Bitinstant and MT Gox, can edge out companies in their respectful niches and position themselves very nicely for the future. So spend your 2.5 bitcoins to be able to help them get even richer, and hinder bitcoin big business.

How can they "edge out companies"?  How?  What magical powers do you imagine this foundation possesses?

(Caveat: your answer must not assume that everyone is as dumb as you)

They can turn computer code into money. That's like alchemy, which is a form of magic.

I personally do not like real name policy of the forum, but also I don't have to post sensitive information there, can just participate in the voting, so it's not a huge problem. If it did allow going with a nickname, then there would be no problem with opening access. However, real name + search bots = not good, will completely stop any posts from foundation members who are not yet public and were not planning to become such.

Bitcoins are not dollars.

It will be interesting to see how the secret collusion of public policy makers and private businesses play out when its attached to an open source project.
506  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BITCOIN MAGAZINE ARRIVED! on: November 02, 2012, 02:43:54 AM
Issue 4 just arrived in The Netherlands  Grin

Fixed your image for you Smiley

But yes, indeed it did arrive in the Netherlands. Very sturdy new plastic shipping envelope (nice!) besides the normal plastic wrap. Haven't read it yet.

Judging by the cover it will be news from two months ago.

There's a reason it's called "old media".
507  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation on: November 01, 2012, 10:54:16 PM
So it's been over 30 days, and the Bitcoin Foundation has already crashed the price of bitcoin by nearly 3 dollars. This is the result of government intervention on the free market. Expect the price to keep going down if these tyrannical power mongers continue to ride roughshod over everyone in the bitcoin ecosystem.

That's what they're doing right? To be honest, I haven't noticed anything that they've actually done. But I do certainly imagine it to be totally evil and stuff, and that's what counts.

The end is nyse!
509  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hurricane on East Coast - possible Bitcoin service disruptions on: October 30, 2012, 05:16:49 AM

Did MNW move to NYC?
510  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hurricane on East Coast - possible Bitcoin service disruptions on: October 29, 2012, 04:30:49 AM
They're shutting down the entire NYSE for two days. I think the bitcoin economy will show its resilience in the face of natural disaster.
511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin-Qt/bitcoind version 0.7.1 released on: October 23, 2012, 11:23:16 AM
@LightRider
I need to understand, when did you reboot and realized that helped? Seems a little weird to me. Perhaps there were orphan instances running, which went away after the reboot.

Dia

Upgraded -> Started bitcoin -> Tried donation links which failed -> Quit bitcoin -> Found multiple donation link processes and force closed them -> Tried starting bitcoin again, but would get no gui or unresponsive gui -> Tried your suggestion and got same result -> Reboot machine -> bitcoin works fine
512  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin-Qt/bitcoind version 0.7.1 released on: October 23, 2012, 05:46:51 AM
Using the donation link on TBF's website does not yield expected behavior. There is no error message indicating that bitcoin is already running, but no apparent action is taken by the running client.

In addition, clicking on the link multiple times creates multiple instances of the bitcoin process, but the user cannot see any affects of them starting. I didn't notice until I checked process explorer and noticed them running. Also, when the client is not running, clicking the link creates a process but no gui appears at all, neither the window nor the tray icon.

This is the command line of the spawned process:

Code:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe" "bitcoin:1BTCorgHwCg6u2YSAWKgS17qUad6kHmtQW?label=Bitcoin+Foundation+Donation"

Did you use the installer for upgrading 0.7.1? What OS are you using?
Can you please start regedit.exe and post what is listed as (default) in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bitcoin\shell\open\command.

Did you give the client time to start-up before hammering that link over and over?

Thanks,
Dia

Yes. Win7x64.
Code:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe" "%1"

I tried it with both the program running and with the program not running. In both instances, the link spawned new processes that appeared to do nothing.

Now that I check, the bitcoin program does not start up properly now. I cannot get a responsive gui.

You can try deleting the contents of "C:\ProgramData\boost_interprocess" when the client is shutdown and report back.

Dia

Doing this did not improve the situation.

However, after a restart, the gui appears and is responsive. Also, the donation link works. I think you should add a reboot step in the upgrade instructions. Thanks for your help, and for another release!

In my opinion, you didn't seem to have a strong grasp of how bitcoin works technically, and it made me almost uneasy to think you are on the board of TBF. I'm sure you know how it works better than I do, but this interview did not expose that fact.

Will there be win32 compiles of this any time soon?

Technical problems call for technical solutions, not wild arm flailing DANGER WILL ROBINSON screaming. Use testnet, report bugs, be constructive. This thread isn't helping your cause.

Does every link have to be routed through reddit?

I still don't know what the hell a reddit is, but this looks like a good development.
