Quote
In case bitcoin crept into your consciousness during a quiet first week of the year, because the price of the so-called cryptocurrency has passed a notable round number in dollars — $1,000 — most questions about the technological curiosity can be answered with another easy to remember figure: zero.

Quote
For instance, the Bank for International Settlements estimates the amount traded daily for the world’s 180 or so recognised currencies. Last year this ranged from $4.4tn in dollars, down to $1bn for the 37th most actively traded, the Bulgarian lev. In this context, the sum of bitcoin transactions rounds to zero.

Quote
Another measure might be the collective value of bitcoins, which stood at $16bn on Tuesday according to Bitcoin Info. Currencies aren’t normally discussed in terms of their overall worth, as they are supposed to be mediums of exchange rather than some absolute store of value. Still, for context, the Central Intelligence Agency put the planet’s stock of broad money — notes, coins, and various forms of bank account — at $82tn as of the end of 2014.

On the CIA figures, the value of bitcoins hashed into existence is similar to the broad money total for Uzbekistani soms. With apologies to Tashkent, the value of soms and bitcoins, and the number of people for whom they are relevant pieces of information in the world of modern finance, both round to zero.

Quote
Treat bitcoins as an investment and even if they could all be sold today for $1,000 apiece, they would only be worth as much as the Cerner Corporation, a US company of moderate size and limited profile involved in the management of digital healthcare records.

Quote
Except treating bitcoin as an investment means it can’t be a currency, and vice versa. The problem is that a medium of exchange prone to collapsing or quadrupling in price is useless as a practical currency, whatever the cryptographic elegance of its creation.

Quote
As a phenomenon bitcoin has all the attributes of a pyramid scheme, requiring a constant influx of converts to push up the price, based on the promise of its use by future converts. So the ultimate value for bitcoin will be the same as all pyramid schemes: zero.

sprachlos.

They say the 2nd time is always better than the first.

which is the case. the current climb up took more than a year, nov2013 boost took only a month.  Smiley

Price                          BTC Allocation

$200-350                     97-99.5%
$350-450                     96-99%
$450-550                     92-98%
$550-650                     90-96%
$650-850                     85-94%
$850-1250             84-92%
$1250-2000             83-91%
$2000-3000             82-90%
$3000-5000             55-84%
$5000-10000             50-80%
$10000-20000             48-78%
$20000-30000             45-75%
$30000-50000             43-73%

i like that. ending up with 73% of my stash when btc hits $30000 is hard to achieve, tough. wouldn´t that be a neat thing to have: your funds stay locked until a certain price is hit. kind of russian roulette type of investment strategy (you either win big or lose all), but still... Cheesy
2553  Economy / Speculation / Re: is 2017 the new 2013? on: January 02, 2017, 05:05:59 PM
I hope definitely not. Mainly because of the fact that it took us so long to reach these price points. That being said, it doesn't hurt to cash out profits at these prices.

I have secured profits between $1000-$1010 which I am very happy with. If the price happens to tank heavily, I have a decent amount of fiat to buy back my coins.

price is playing on 1020-1030 USD and from what i am seeing on the Chinese markets i don't think this is going anywhere other than up, i actually would prefer it a lot if price stayed here a little longer but i am not so sure about it anymore.
i think we will see $1200 soon.

and to answer OP things are so different from 2013 and i didn't vote because i didn't like any of the other choices!

feel free to suggest better ones.  Smiley

Anyone remember which bitcoin price chart had that neat flashing "ATH" symbol when ATH was reached. I wanna make sure i get that experience again. Smiley
Either bitcoinwisdom or bitcoinity ...

bitcoinity. if you check any exchange that opened in 2014 or later, there is a good chance you will see the flashing sign today.

for absolute ATH, you'll have to keep your eye on stamp.

that would just show flashing green around the price. the lightning stuff is i think only for ath in the selected currency, though i haven't been watching the CNY page.

bitcoinity's code shows a flashing sign for any exchange when it reaches its ATH.  i saw one today.

when we reach $10k i start flashing myself.  Wink

BTC-E, the weird exchange, also approaching 1000.

all this just does not seem to be any kind of "epic battle @ $1000" that some expected. it is more like a a smooth elevator rise. Cheesy
