I see that there is a ohm rating and a W rating on resistors. I know to get anything from 50-150 ohm, but what about the W rating?

Hi,
I also want to build a machine employing 4 5850 GPUs. I thought about the following:
MSI 790FX-GD70 4x SAPPHIRE HD5850 Extreme AMD Sempron 140 Kingston ValueRAM DIMM 1 GB DDR3-1066 OCZ Fatal1ty 750W
This is of course different to your specs since mine is going to be a dedicated miner. Still the mainboard and PSU might fit your needs.
Maybe some of the miner/hardware gurus of the board can share their thoughts on our plans. I am not so sure whether 750W is enough, especially when overclocking the cards! Any advice appreciated!
Note that you cannot increase voltage on that sapphire 5850 card, thus limiting your OC potential. Mine max out at 830 core.

You might want to verify that those cards will be able to cool themselves directly next to each other. I've only had luck doing this with reference cards. I've had to place non-reference cards in the furthest spot from the CPU because they hit 80+ temps when jammed next to another card.
GPUs can reach 100C with no problems. I've had 9800GX2 reaching 105-109C and still runs without errors.

Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How to lower memory clock to really low speeds?

What's the idea behind keeping memory clocks super low? I realize GPU memory speed has little if any effect on mining, but I would imagine lowering them THAT low would affect mining. Am I wrong in that assumption? If you can mine at the same speed with such low memory clocks that is awesome, you'd end up saving a good deal of electricity and lower your GPU temps.
ive lowered both my 6990s to 650 from 1250 mem clock speed. mining rate did not change, nor did the temp or the noise. cant tell if its using less electricity, but i hope so I always though lower memory speed will increase mining speed. If mining rates did not change, then I guess I will just keep mine memory at default speed.

Found the problem I open GPUz while i had catalyst open on overdrive page and it crashes consistently
I had that problem too with my 5850. I solved it by lowering the AGGRESSION level.

Have been running fine until today. Redownloaded the miner did not solve it. Win 7 x64. nVidia Quadro FX 880M. Please see picture.

The 5850 can be unlocked to a 5870 with a simple bios upgrade. and I think they have a dual bios so you can't brick them either.
It's the 6950 that can be unlocked, and even then it's only partly true. You can unlock a 5850 to 5870 clock speeds, but NOT unlocking the shaders, as it is impossible. There is no point in unlocking 5850 to 5870, as it only increases the clock speed, which you can already do in numerous OC software. Now if flashing 5850 to 5870 can unlock the voltage, then that is a different story. But keep in mind that Sapphire 5850 Xtreme does NOT use the reference design, so you might brick your card.

You can't insert a x16 card into a x1 slot with a PCI-E x1 riser. You can do that if you CUT open the slot. And if you did, you might run into problem with system not recognizing the presence of your VGA, which might lead you to some solder work to do, to trick the system into thinking the card is present.

Are you guys kidding? I thought the dummy plugs era has long gone. I remember having to use those for multiple nVidia 8 and 9 series cards, but later, it was solved with a new driver update. Since then, I threw away all of my dummy plugs.
Where can I buy resisters locally? Would Radio Shack have them? Do I need to solder it into the DVI to VGA adapter? Or can I simply insert it into the pins?

Bitcoin / Mining / Multiple GPU setup, poclbm not seeing device 1 and 2

Win7 x64, 11.4 driver. Got 3 5850 card installed. Ran phoenix1.4 with poclbm kernel. It only sees device 0.
I opened up GPU-Z, MSI AfterBurner, and Windows Device Manager, all showing I have 3 graphics cards. AMD Vision control shows I have 9 available video outputs, which is correct, 3 for each card, total of 9.
What is the problem here? Must CrossfireX be enabled? What if my board doesn't support CrossfireX? it is a old 790FX chipset board. Also, I have 3 cards, each with only one Crossfire connector on top, how could I possibly connect all three together? Yes, my 5850 has only one Crossfire connector on the top.
