I think a more interesting approach would be dividing the pool equally among anyone actively "mining" for the reward at the point in time it is discovered.  This would ensure people with limited hardware capabilities could participate in something that would ultimately yield a reward and wouldn't be a completely frivolous waste of time and resources for everyone involved with the exception of a single individual.  Rather than a competition, it would be something the community could share in excitement over which could potentially spill over into spread.

Hmm. Interesting. Groups of nodes could listen to each other and coordinate a search. Its sort of a way to get people to run nodes and keep them on. Possibly, a way to give out rewards on a regular basis, like a mining equivalent for running nodes with correctly configured ports.

However, GPU and ASICs would kill that approach as well, in the end, unless you could tie nodes to the search process:

http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/28223/use-multiple-gpus-with-oclvanitygen

A small treasure (well, 0.25btc) is sitting out there in an address waiting to be found.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3i1l6m/a_small_treasure_out_there_on_the_internet/

Looks like going big, possibly with monthly payouts on easier addresses, is the way to go.

Would that mean doing both a longer term competition and the monthly competition each with different amounts of reward? I do like the idea of the monthly competition, I think more individuals would be interested because people are generally too impatient to wait 2 years - at least I would get impatient hahah

Been away recently. What's new?

Reading over the Dogecoin competition, that chart quite a few pages back probably sums up the feedback. The higher the prize, the greater the interest.

One of the guys has done his numbers and worked out its better to mine than risk using up power for an unknown all or nothing outcome. Increase the prize by 1,000 times and I would be happy to take the risk.

Still thinking about this - and I stumbled against an issue.

If I knew I had found the van gen, I would just let the bounty build up and up, knowing I'd already won.

So, perhaps a game of chicken is needed. The prize would build up, but you never know when X% is going to cash out and be spread around the participating community or various groups within the community chosen on a provably random basis. The remaining balance would be built up again, but at any stage some or all of it could be shared around.

That would make the competition unpredictable, and hopefully more exciting for everyone.

hmm...needs more thinking....

edit

Perhaps having:

* SatoshiNakamoto1
* SatoshiNakamoto2
* SatoshiNakamoto3

in play at the same time might deal with someone sitting on a win.

I agree with changing Spreadcoin to Spread.

Heres a video of it:
https://youtu.be/NLcNXX5BjRw

Enjoy.

Is it bad that this video makes me think of my liver?

Funny you should say that.... I had the sudden urge to go to the bathroom after watching the video.
It's like it stimulated the release valve of my bladder.

It happens sometimes when I watch liquifying things...  Grin
An HD version of that animation is coming out in a few hours. Cheesy

Edit: Each frame takes 37 seconds to render, animation is 440 frames.

Click Here to See Spreadcoin transform into Spread in HD
So yeah, I made this.

Damnit, I had the shading set to flat, so you can see the surface of the liquid has hard edges. Sad
Better do it again...

Just a quick note to people following this project.

As I'm sure you noticed there was no weekly update last week.  This was in part because of day job demands.  I'm working with a new client and it is taking me a while to adjust.

I said in my original post about updates that there would always be an update regardless of progress (or lack of).  I dropped the ball last week for which I apologise.

I will be writing an update on Friday.

Here you go with the most recent windows wallets:

New preview wallet that will always find a block source within 20 sec and has all the recent bug fixes:

http://www.spreadcoin.info/downloads/preview_wallet_1.zip

Or if you choose to use the old wallet, I updated that too (so that it always finds a block source):

http://www.spreadcoin.info/downloads/SpreadCoin32.zip

I will create builds for mac / linux later.

This is a very good discussion on Reddit on costs and bandwidth of running a full bitcoin node

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3ik1l2/current_bandwidth_usage_on_full_node/

Limiting the number of connecting nodes obviously regulates the bandwidth.
