potential investor here  Wink

any news?

cloud storage working?
I don't think you can go wrong with getting involved with this project, or investing. I just regret not getting more coins when at 3. But that's just one side of a great concept, the coin itself. The storage system is in a class all its own.

Hello everyone,

So I have a remote disk mounted on a windows machine. How do I set the client to share the space on this device only?

On Linux you would create a symbolic link from your /host folder to the mounted disk. On Windows, I think you can use the command mklink. See:

You mean what price to charge? The max price is 500 SC. Clients will ignore you if you charge more than that. Other than that, anything between 0 and 499 Siacoins / GB / month is possible.

To run a host, just keep in mind you really need to run your host 24/7 and have a static IP address. If clients cannot connect to you and confirm you still have files at the end of the file contract, you won't be paid.

Also note, that if you close the UI you also shutdown Sia.

I bought in with 5 bitcoins at 6 sats and i hope to see it go to 60 sats atleast, that would be a nice 10x return Cheesy

I am confident it will get to that level, but be prepared to hold on to your siacoins for a couple of months at least. There's exciting stuff happening in development that will improve the network in the coming weeks/months.

Thanks!

Ill do I wanna test it. But shouldnt this be in the GUI to make it easier for people to use it.

Synced the wallet in no time, but got stock at block 34680 almost 3 hours ago.

The UI is work-in-progress. Right now, devs are focusing on the core features. User experience and features will be added gradually.

About sync: Several people have had issues syncing in the last 1-2 days. Could be that a large portion of the network for some reason is behind, but I'm not sure. Devs are also working on syncing related issues. Just be patient and it should sync eventually, though it may take some time.

Having d/loaded v.0.5.1 from https://github.com/NebulousLabs/Sia-UI/releases/download/v0.5.1-beta/Sia-UI-win32-x64.zip, clicked on 1 click unzip and a short way into the process got an error message, so I aborted – here's the win zip log showing the error message:

Quote
Unable to process "Sia-UI-win32-x64\resources\app\node_modules\sia.js\node_modules\tar\node_modules\fstream\node_modules\rimraf\node_modules\glob\node_modules\minimatch\node_modules\brace-expansion\node_modules\balanced-match\".
Severe Error: Not permitted or able to create an output directory.

Anyone know if that's a problem with the file or would it necessarily have to be something to do with the OS I'm using - Windows 7 professional edition?

Got same issue with 046, but now syncing again with no problem!

1. Will u add checksums for DLs on your site?
2. Can I specify which volumes/folders to share with the network?
3. The bidding/auction/contract system seems way too complex and convoluted for mainstream. Are there plans to automate this more?
4. Will Sia struggle for adoption given it is pricier (and slower?) than the commercial competition? Looking at the explorer I can see the network is underused atm.
5. I like the idea of file-sharing in Sia. Can I link a friend to a file dropbox-style? Is such a thing planned? Torrents?
6. Sia could be as valuable as a file-sharing network as it is a backup network. I looked at Sunfish and could not find a single file to download. Whats the story here? Can somebody upload something there so I see what it looks like? https://staging.siafiles.com
7. Somebody claimed you were an Ethereum clone. I notice you do implement SC's. So is he full of shit or are you a bit copy-cat? Forgive the Q but must ask. Could you have built Sia on Ethereum? Might you still?
8. You are to be congratulated on an ingenious product.

Thx for ur thoughts.

Hello

You should expect it to take somewhere around 1 day before you start seeing your first contracts. This is primarily because there is not a ton of usage on the network right now, but that should change as we continue to improve the UX for uploading and downloading.

1. Download checksums are included in the .sia you receive to download a file. All downloads are checksummed before they are put on disk.
2. Currently you must symlink to the host folder in the sia directory. Support for multiple folders is currently in development, and will be ready in the next release.
3. Yes, there are plans to do a lot of automation around the pricing scheme, while still giving power users full customizability. Features take time to develop, likely 1.0 will not have much automation yet.
4. Sia should not be pricier than the commercial competition, if we're seeing that now it's only because the redundancy is at 6x for the beta and because people are not currently competing aggressively for storage contracts. I think we will see the price come down after the next release.
5. There were originally plans to support file sharing, but we are spending all of our time improving and optimizing the core storage functions of our client right now. Sunfish sets the stage for some filesharing, but it's a proof-of-concept that is no longer being developed. If anyone feels like continuing that work or making their own file sharing platform on top of Sia, we're happy to assist you.
6. Sunfish is not currently being developed, we're focusing on the core functionality of Sia first. Until that's out of beta, we will not be working on a file sharing platform.
7. We are not an Ethereum clone, and while you could technically build Sia on top of ethereum the amount of gas you'd need is very high, and you'd have to compete for space on the Ethereum blockchain with all of the other high-gas applications (like Augur) that are being put onto the blockchain. I don't think Ethereum would be a good choice as a foundation for a platform like Sia.
8. Thanks! We have been working hard.

edit: more on price. It looks like the majority of the network is just using the default storage price. Since the price of the coin has approximately tripled since the last release, the default price is actually much higher than we had intended. Most hosts serving data above the default price at this point should not be getting very many file contracts. Despite this, my price is indicating $11 / TB / Mo, which is substantially cheaper than Amazon - less than half the price!
