I'm running siacoin in linux, and I'm wondering before I deposit some siacoins from an exchange, how do I backup or save my wallet?
Also, where is the blockchain stored? Is there a block explorer?

Ah, I found the wallet file here:

Saving wallet.dat should be enough. It should be identical to wallet.backup. Encrypting is already a part of 0.4.0, and will also be in 0.4.1

So, open question: What do you need from Sia in order for you to start using it to store files?

- the option to select multiple files
- a more user friendly gui (the fact that it works with most people is not an argument, I had to open ports and add gateways for it to work = not very user friendly)
- command line only for developer reasons, if you want mass adoption you don't want the majority to have access to something they don't understand. It scares them away.  
- the ability to upload files larger than 500MB
- Progress: a solid team working on sia, moving forward in a professional way with enough transparency.  
- trust, if you want me to store my files I need to know or at least have the absolute impression that my files are safe. This is a beta, which means they aren't. Most people will likely only store (personal) data with a final product that has had some 'testing', has been reviewed, troubleshooted, benchmarked,...etc.
 
I will however store some data that is 'a little less important' to get the ball rolling and support this community. Community, also very important!

Keeping in mind this is a beta I know everything needed will be added once it's ready. But you asked, so...  

edit: the ability to lock my wallet and make backup directly from gui instead of having to copy it out of the folder.

Very legit things most users would want or expect   the easier it is to use the better, for sure

I think for starters everyone needs to introduce SIA to a friend somewhere, anyone with a pc lol, download a copy to your flash drive and install it for them if need be. Have a few coins to send them right away from your wallet to get them started even 100 coins would jump start them and have them upload some basic music files or (non important as you said) and let people see how easy it is to store data. Next full version will do much more as well.

Let them grow with it from there.  

Personally I think SIA is a really cool storage tool right now... can't wait for newer versions!

The difficulty went up, the price fell, and all the miners left. Now blocks are being mined very slowly.

When we get to height 16500, the difficult will drop again and some of the miners should come back.

In the meantime, it would really help if you guys kept mining so we can get through the next 300 blocks as soon as possible. Otherwise it's going to take a week or so.

Ya, when its cheaper to buy then to mine, always see the hash drop. Only temporary I'm sure.

I may fire up a miner or 2 to help, but everyone should at least turn on 1 miner to get through the next 300.

I suppose in this situation now, a pool would definitely pull hash rate back up.  hard to balance priority's though as we understand.

question: should "siac miner status" return the total blocks mined or just the number of blocks found by the current running instance of a running miner? from my own experience it seems to be the latter as my current output shows 0 and 0 stales. however, my one block i mined 5 days ago finally showed up in my wallet balance after I gave up waiting for it to confirm 2 days ago and especially after running the miner status command a few times after I had to restart my pc and hence wallet. it went from showing 1 mined block to 0.

thanks. i'd imagine the cli will eventually be updated to return the correct number of coins mined. this misreporting did stop me from mining thinking it was a bug or problem on my end. i might give it another go though, as a miner i'd like more information about difficulty, current block times and #mined blocks so i can weigh up whether i should mine or just buy my siacoins.

There is a marketing campaign in place, though we're waiting for the new website to be finished before kicking it off.

Mining pools are going to be delayed until there are people actively uploading to the network, we're going to be focused on developing things that enable that in the meantime.

I think if people usually back up their wallets , it is impossible to loose their amounts..

I have 2 wallet.dat files (on 2 pcs) with total of ~2.25m sia which havent been moved from the addresses that the client see (in wallet tab)

but the client shows 0 balance on both, how do I get those sia out ?
