Looks like you can downgrade from 11-25 to 7-13 if things don't play on older s9's
Have an 11.85 that I tried to upgrade to 11-25 but bmminer version did not show up, just blank on system page,
miner would not start to hash. Booted ok.
Rolled back to 7-13 and things were fine.
Some older s9's will not work on the new firmware.

Good info, thanks.
Do you happen to remember batch number S9 that went blank after an update? Mine are b10 and b12.
I wonder, why the heck bitmain says "all" eligible for an update.
Did you roll back 7-13 version after saving it to PC? I see that there is an option of saving the current system.

Incase anyone was wondering. The S9 can be made quieter if you want to underclock it. I've got mine running at 200m pulling 430w at the wall getting 4.2Th and it's nicely located under my desk.

this only works on the old versions of the s9. on the new batches you cant control the speed of the fans or the speed of the miner unfortunately. unless u do what i mentioned in previous posts but that only works for the fan not the miner speed.

The latest firmware let's you sit the freq on firmware install... so it can be done still

so you have an autofreq s9 and when you set the freq it actually sets it and runs at that freq? because what i have seen the manual freq only works on the pre auto tune miners and doesnt apply the freq to the non auto tune boards.....

The LATEST, s9 firmware, allows you to set the operational FREQ at install.
so in theory you could set a 14th S9 to run at 9TH. and underclock it...
I have not played with this yet

An update for the community at large, both my S9s upgraded without issue.  They seem to be hashing better but it could very likley be varince in the pool.  Batch 13 miners, firmware Antminer-S9-all-201611252206-autofreq-user.tar.gz which I think is the latest.

This update procedure is nerve-wracking when it is done remotely.
After software boots, somehow there is a socket failed indication.
I had no idea what it means, tried to reverse with a backup, which failed somehow, then I decided to reinstall upgrade again, saw socket failed for a second time and decided to simply wait. At that time miner did not show any mining, obviously. In about 3-5 min, miner started mining. Instead of PCB and chip temp there is now Chip1 (which is absent) and Chip 2 temp. Temp was actually higher than before initially, but eased below 98C (not to 80ies , though). Overall, chip temp are a bit higher, but WU is slightly higher as well.
Not sure that I will do the update on more machines.

hmmm well when you do please let us know because freq control would be awesome for the autotune miners.

The 'Failed socket connection' is referring to the miner software not being able to being able to open a communications port to the hash boards while they are starting up or auto-tuning. Perfectly normal. The s7 does this as well, just for a much shorter time.

Have so many batches have no idea.
All I know is my stickers say 11.85 or 12.83 except for the autotune which is 13.5
I probably have a sprinkling of all. Bought them as funds became available.

On the upgrade to nov 25 and the downgrade back to 7-13 did not do anything extra and settings showed up the same.

On the 11-25 upgrade the bmminer version did not show up on the system page on the 11.85. Should be 2.0

The selection I got for freq was 550 or 600 or 650. I'm not sure you can set it to whatever you want?

I'm with you, if it is working then don't go to the new firmware.
12.83's seem to like the new firmware. But I like to leave things alone. If a board goes and you have to repair you are down one board for a week.

They are at 11-28 firmware now. This is kicking my ass. But better than no upgrades.
Running one autotune on 11-28, seems ok.
The bmminer version does not show up until it is hashing. Takes 7 minutes.  I did not wait long enough for my 11.83 to boot.
Need patience with this new firmware.

I have not played with it yet, as I'm happy with how mine is working on older FW.
Maybe those are the only options? but then someone with a 14th machine could clock it down, but if you had the lowest already, maybe not?

Today I updated my Batch 23 to latest FW build 11-28 All seems well no noticeable change in the last few FW versions but I did notice the failed socket error time seems to have been reduced and don't tend to see that message anymore

Upgraded my 11.83 to 11-28 and it booted. Only has one board for now.
Worked ok but fans are at 6000 with clock at 550 to keep the chips under 100
Takes 7 minutes for the miner to start hashing with the new firmware.

Rolled back to 7-13 for now.

Rolled back to 7-13 for now.

I might have done the same, but somehow reversal to 7-13 does not take. I tried once with the saved tar and it said "successed" (sic)), but software did not change back. The whole sitting at "sock failure" (and no other communications) for a few min is in itself a bit iffy as far as interface is concerned.

confirmed the 1128 fw flashing time took about 6-7 minutes. In 1125, I had two boards that produces high error rates relatively, ~0.0026% in 2 days. Now the error rate is about 0.0005% and I noticed hash rate improved by about 150~200 GH/s. will see how it does after longer run time.

No problem for me rolling back to 7-13.
These are pre-autotune machines.
I used the 7-13 firmware that I had downloaded from bitmain on 7-13. I believe it was the 600M version. I'm running the machine at 550M.

Sometimes just a reboot will calm down the error rates.

So after the 11-28 flash starts it take 7 minutes to finish/boot. Then it starts hashing and the Bmminer version 2.0 shows up on the system page.
The configuration page then will show a frequency selection 550-600-650
Once you select it the selection will go away forever and the frequency will be set/changed.
I think at that point it needs a reboot to calm the error rate.
