Been keen on bitcoin for a while, decided on Friday to research and see how the mining works..
Here's my results:

Using latest DiabloMiner (-w 64 -na) with deepbit pool:
mhash: 1.3/1.4
MacBookPro, 10.7.5, GeForce 9400M Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.26 GHz

I'm aware mining without the right hardware is a little redundant,  and likely even more redundant in the near future, but I like to figure out how things work..

Any comments on these results are welcome

Hi and thanks for the welcome and info. Can I ask, do you remember what setup you used to achieve 6 mhash/s?
Playing with DiabloMiners switches, I've only managed to increase from 1.1 to 1.7, seems I'm missing something obvious maybe?

Oops, tried now with:

bitcoin-miner.exe -a 5 -g no -o http://... -v

and got this for my Core2D T7400:

Seems like my memory was too keen, sorry about that... but it's still more. Since you are at deepbit, have you tried their settings from https://deepbit.net/help ? And what CPU do you have exactly?

Edit: You might want to check/ask the deepbit forum https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3889.0 or some other specific thread *hint*

Thanks for getting back to me with the details. I reckon it's because DiabloMiner is only GPU and OSX Lion is noted as not being great at GPU mining because of Apple's OpenCL implementation. Well, at least that's what I've managed to ascertain from various threads and bitcoin.stackexchange etc. I'll look into CPU mining and see how it compares.

Interestingly enough, deepbit actually reports 7.96 MH/s in the dashboard, while DiabloMiner is reporting 1.4/1.5 mhash
Makes me wonder whether the figures DiabloMiner is reporting is somehow miscalculated/calculated differently. I'll investigate further and find that Newbie DiabloMiner thread, ta for the hint Wink

First post!

Well, not knowing how to start a new topic here yet, I guess I'll have to start with a reply.

Hi,
I'm Ploni Almoni (John Doe) and I like to take my privacy and anonymity online very seriously.  I practice anonymity as much as I possibly can.  This drive to learn as much as I can about how to practice these things online lead me eventually to the hacktivist/activist group Anonymous.  I don't agree with all of their principles and practices but I do value immensely freedom of speech and information on the web.  The main operation that I am involved with is #OpPedoChat where we focus primarily on cleaning up the clear web from pedophilia and pedo rings.  Until I joined this Op, I thought that the clear web had been already cleaned.  Come to find out, there is still a lot of this filth out there even on FaceBook and Twitter and it is making a strong come back on the web recently.

If you would like to learn more about how to practice anonymity and privacy on the web; if you would like to get involved with some of the Op's that Anonymous is running; if you would like to join in #OpPedoChat do not hesitate to contact me.  I am always willing to help and you may donate to my bitcoin wallet according to your satisfaction with my advise.  You can find me on freenode channel #bitcoin-otc
