This friend asked me around 6 weeks ago how to buy bitcoin so I sent him all the information he needed but without the preaching. In my mind preaching about bitcoin is a bit 2013 for me and not something I do anymore ...

You're a better person than me - a few months ago some loved ones asked me about Bitcoin after ridiculing/ignoring my interest in it since 2014. I said I'd be happy to help, then couldn't resist a little "well well, look at this, how the tide has turned, how ironic, oooh" moment. Totally put them off and never heard Bitcoin mentioned again.

Let this be a lesson to those that don't know, save the self-congratulatory back patting for r/bitcoin, or just never.

Do I bother to help?

I would say yes do please still help, when it comes to Bitcoin/crypto the more the merrier. The thing is not to feel invested in your friends choices: if your friend wants to trade his coin away then that's his decision, it's all part of the journey. One day he'll stumble upon a sound investment strategy (or he'll ask you  Wink ) and who knows maybe he'll become a zealot too!

Be a faucet. Send some milliBits his way. Lead a horse to water. That's probably the best thing imo.

So, anyhow, you come off as a bit of a snake oil salesman who is trying to get others to sell a bit in order to better prepare for down, and in that regard kind of lecturing some kind of supposed higher wisdom that you are proclaiming.  Am I wrong?

I agree that everyone should prepare for both up and down, but if someone does not feel comfortable selling, then why sit there and try to pressure them and rub it in, except seems that you want to talk your book here, rather than realistically share BTC price direction predictions that you have.

I said what I'm doing and why. Not pressuring anyone to do anything.
I'm still quite bullish long term. Bearish short term. Far from sure. Trying to stay diversified enough for any scenario.

Here's a question to anyone partially intelligent.

What's the deal with getting bgold when my btc is on a Trezor?

All I am reading about is no replay protection and it's a bit unsettling to say the least. I bought the Trezor for 2 reasons

1) security

2) ease of claiming coins during a fork as last time I had paper wallets and it was a total kick in the plums trying to set up new wallets, move coins and enter old priv key into bcash software wallet.

It doesn't seem as easy as pressing a "coin split" button and then "send to exchange" button as I had hoped.

Live and learn.

1) The easy way to get the coins is wait until Trezor incorporate some sort of coin splitting. But you may not get the ability until well after everyone else.

2) You could move you coins before the fork to a paper wallet, and then after the fork move them back to the Trezor, BTCGold should be left on the paper wallet.

3) Another way is to extract the private keys from your Trezor seed manually. You can use this script.
https://gist.github.com/mflaxman/f6350d84cef7a9ef997a0bc99f120a86
****Please don't do this unless you are confident that you know what you are doing. To ensure security don't do it on a machine thats connected to the internet, and once completed wipe the machine completely. ****

BTCGold dev has said they will definitely release with replay protection.

Women vote more uniformly than men, which means the moment women got the vote, women controlled politics. And women always vote for more security at the expense of freedom. Which, as every american knows, means you will get neither.

This explains why there's no women into bitcoin. Bitcoin is all freedom and very risky.

Women's nature is passive. There's no way to change it, despite what hysterical feminists want.

Bugger off, idiot.

There are plenty of LEADING women in BTC including the founder & president of the Digital Chamber of Commerce.

There are women in this thread reading you EMBARASSING YOURSELF right now.

Go crawl back into that cave & come out when you've evolved a few centuries, GEEEEEEZ.

I sent $5 - $50 worth of BTC to several friends about 3 years ago. It's worth about 18x more now.   Cheesy  They're definitely into it now.
Funny b/c a mBTC then is was worth $5 now last week.

BTW MOST of those friends are women, to all the cavemen here.  I think my method of onboarding women to BTC works nicely. And more intelligent than labelling them with words that better apply to you..... *reaches for "ignore" button*

"Coinbase made a startling revelation Friday in its FAQ section, where it claimed that Bitcoin Gold (BTG) has already privately forked. The private fork occurred “at a point known only to the Bitcoin Gold development team.” The newly minted digital currency will be made publicly available when the Bitcoin blockchain reaches block no. 491,407. That’s estimated to occur Wednesday."

I'm always skeptical about secret pre-mines.  Sad

edit:  New update from Coinbase:  they will support & credit their BTC holders with Seg2x but not BTCGold.

why are you guys wasting time worrying about junk forks?

coinbase have just confirmed their position on the primary junk fork - https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/2892985-segwit-2x-faq

'Following the fork, we will continue referring to the current bitcoin blockchain as Bitcoin with the symbol ‘BTC’.  We will refer to the new blockchain resulting from the fork as Bitcoin2x with the symbol ‘B2X’.'

I'll send the horse some water but there's gotta be a trough to dump it in, no?
In other words...yes, I'm more than happy to send milliBits to friends to get them started,
but they gotta download a wallet 1st (or register on Coinbase or the like) and send me the receiving addy.
nope...not happening... (unless I'm missing something)

Well fair enough on that description of your approach.

You and I are not too far separated in terms of percentage that we consider allocated in our BTC versus fiat funds.

You state that currently you are about 80% BTC and about 20% fiat, and currently I am about 90% BTC and about 10% fiat.

Actually, I don't really know exact specifics regarding how my BTC/fiat allocation is going to play out in advance however, as the BTC price has gone up, it seem that my BTC allocations have little by little been becoming a larger percentage in fiat, and since about $1,000, I have only come down from about 95% BTC  to my current levels of about 90% BTC... for whatever reason, but maybe it is like the difference between your allocation and mine (a 10% difference) merely reflects one or more of these scenarios: 1) I am a bit more bitcoin bullish than you , 2) some of my other financial allocations, timeline, or risks are different from yours or 3) perhaps, we gamble a bit differently in terms of our anticipations of BTC price directions.

In my experience people are hopeless. What can you do?

Anecdote. Years ago I sent someone some coin. I had to insist he get himself an address. Long story short, he's an IT guy and he forgot his "wallet code".
