Always look at the team and advisors. Lately there's been too many scams so you have to look at the people behind it.

Recently, the ICO's that have impressive teams are Civic and UnikoinGold.

With Civic you have Vinny (obvious win) and with UnikoinGold you have Mark Cuban/Ashton Kutcher back the already-existing esprots betting platform Unikrn.

The first is I need to make sure that the coin is not a scammed, then I will see does the coin got the potential to earn profit and does the potential is long term or a short term investment, the reason I invest in alt coin is for profit, alt coin is a cheaper than bitcoin and it got a good potential to generate big profit
There are many factors upon which one selects the best coin for them. You are risking your money on one special coin and for that make sure the coin you are selecting is one of the most generous in profit regards. So you are absolutely right that you must check, make yourself satisfied with all ifs and buts on coin and then decide wisely to buy or not.

The devs/team have always been my first target and I usually do a whole lot of research on them before even trying to see if it is a project worth considering or not. Once that is confirmed to be okay, then I read more about the project to see if it is worth giving a chance or not after thorough analysis on past projects of the same nature, how fair it has been and how this one tends to fill certain gap.

Then after analyzing the risk, I judge my investment based on that risk. As much as ICOs can be very profitable, they can always be risky, so it is necessary for one to be very careful and know that there is still a chance of not getting your funds back but with all that said above, the chances of not making profit is always low.

My advice to do some research about project and team. Read white paper several times. There are a lot of scam altcoins so you need a lot of expirience to find the good one. But this expirience  will come to you only after a lot of time reading and learning..
Whitepapers don't always give the right answers to the people that are willing to invest. The only thing that can make someone invest is if they see if they coin has updates.

White papers can include answers to the most common questions but that is not the purpose of a white paper, the purpose is to explain the project as clearly as possible but no matter how through is the explanation there are always going to be things left out, that is why you need to use their ANN thread or slack and telegram and ask your questions there.

At first i look at the project, its market value and technology used in it then i invest in any altcoin. For investing in a ico you must also consider team members and their expertise. Some project looks very interesting but when you analyse the market you came to know that market will not pick this kind of project. Main thing to consider is, return on investment.

The one that encourages me to invest in any altcoin is its price in the market and its increasing value. I think that all individuals invest in some altcoins because they want to earn more money but they have to be patient in investing into altcoins. The price is the most important to know before investing and you must also check its site where you can exchange it.

I am a crypto enthusiastic and i know a 90% of people here on bitcointalk are as well.
There are a lot of altcoins in the market today. What should one look out for before investing in any altcoin
You need to look for a unique problem  that they want to solve using the technology  in the future and it must be achievable. Check the background of the team specially the developers if they have good or bad reputation in the industry. Affiliated companies that is known for example Microsoft, IBM etc.

Today's ico projects are almost the same concept, they are less creative just rely on "better than the previous project" but the concept is the same.

I think you must to check the community of the altcoin you want to invest first. Example ANN thread in Bitcointalk Forum, this is the place have many people discuss about this coin and you can discuss your opinion with them.

Well I think, what encourages me to invest/trade in altcoin is its volatility in prices. It can go up and down massively. But as I can profit in this, I can lose also with this that is why timing is very important in trading specially with this altcoins. Sometimes I also refer to its long term objective and who is behind this project. But many times I just nevermind all of this and just read the chart and trade. Many of these are just ideas and concept but no product in real life. That is why I do not just rely on what is the coin but rather than  what is on the chart. That is where the money is.

I really go after the altcoin which are already on the exchanges. It is easy to predict the future of the coin by seeing the trades of it on the exchanges. On the other hand, New coins which are on the ICO stage, we never know if the they can even make to the exchanges. These days listing of exchanges is expensive and small dev  dont get the paid listing on the exchanges.

This is one of the major reason why people looks to invest in altcoin. Also another reason is that it is available  very easily and cheaply especially if you are buying during ICO stages. If one can identify the potential of the coin then its better to invest early so that when it is launched and rise in future you will have good profits and make be millionaire if it rises too much.

But those new coins can give you big profit because there is no correction of price yet in those, much proftable than majority of those who held an ICO and already establised a correction price. New coins are mostly on hype.

If you are getting difficulties in riding these waves, take these as a challenge instead. There's no easy money but we can make it quiet easy by challenging all the associated risks.

With the steady increase of new ICOs it's hard to keep track of a good one and you ended up tied on multiple choices rather than picking one at a time. Normally, the project will be the first to look out for. Their purpose, of course who are the teams behind it. If they can be reliable enough to hand them my investment.

before investing in altcoins you should see and study the project. look at the team working on the project. and also read the whitepaper or see the project roadmap.

If you're saying the old ones are not in hyped prices, I agree with you. Many of nice projects are suffering from extremely low prices in the market. Check Monetha, DENT, Stox and all others.

If the altcoin can do something that bitcoin can't, then it's a winner.
Examples:

SIACOIN: It provides decentralized storage. This is not something you can do with bitcoin. SIACOIN will be a winner

BLACKCOIN: Bitcoin can do the same as blackcoin. So there is no room for blackcoin, it will go down to 0 eventually.

Basically I would say check for what the coin can be used and if this branch has a potential, but practically I say take a look at their marketing budget!

The biggest marketing budget has potentially the largest growth potential.

If you have a good product but not enough money to peomote it, you will likely fail.

If you have a medium quality product but a huge marketing budege, your change to succeed is unlike higher.  Smiley

We no longer live in a product driven world (whether or not that is good thing is your call) but this means that marketing is or will become a huge part of these alt coins. So many of these coins have a solid team, have well written code, and offer a working product, but nowadays that isn't enough. Marketing is becoming a part of the larger ICOs because an effective campaign can generate so much more interest than the product alone. Now that some of the general public who aren't tech experts are getting into bitcoin and other altcoins, I see marketing becoming more and more important.

Still look for: A solid team, advisers who have been on successful projects, a well written white paper, coins that will be able to be incorporated back into the ecosystems they are created for (i.e. wont be created just to be flipped), but also consider the coins who have marketing teams/ budgets that will get more users involved and make you ICO investors more $$$
