Please correct me if I'm wrong - but if these October units don't ship until October, then people will never make their money back. Forget about profit! :/

http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/a/df9a6ceb29

This is a matter of opinion. Belief bordering on religion. My personal opinion is that if they were shipped in the beginning of Aug. they still wouldn't make their money back because the difficulty, and the hashrate driving it, would have risen enough to compensate for it due to an increased amount of hardware becoming available.

All the profitability predicters do not take into account that if the hardware were priced cheaper to allow break even, the amount of hardware purchased would increase to nulify the lower price. There are a lot of reasons to mine Bitcoin, but increasing your wealth is rarely one of them. Shocked

Anyone who purchases mining gear with the intent of profiting is doing so with the hope that difficulty will level off sometime in 2014 so that mining will be marginally profitable long-term.

A year from now you're looking at monthly revenue of $2. If you ever do break even years later, you'll be making so little that it won't even be able to cover electricity expenses.

Bitcoin is a virtual currency. If you're mining Bitcoin, by default you are trying to increase wealth because you are trying to obtain currency. The question is, are you increasing or decreasing? A year from now if you're only making $2 USD per month, and electricity costs you anymore than that, you have invested in something that decreases your wealth. Of course this is all assuming the BTC/USD rates don't change over those 12 months.

I have my own ASICs hashing away and was interested in purchasing some BitFurys. However I don't see it as being a sound investment anymore. Like most of you, I also hope the BTC/USD rate goes way up.

Do you honestly think difficulty will be 500 billion in 1 year? 3360 times what it is now? That calculator is completely wrong for long term predictions. At 500 billion difficulty, 100TH/s would be making about $10 a day... minus a few thousands bucks for electricity. lol.

The calculator is good for a 2-4 month idea of increase. After that i think we will become much more linear

Ok!!! My new MB has arrived! It is a ver 2 board, so i guess this means i have to update my flash drive to the v2 image. looking at the reference to an FAQ in this thread i gather that I have to do this on a Linux machine? It can't be done on winXP netbook?  Sad

Ok, the most convient Linux machine that i have at the moment is crunching away with 51 USB Erupters. Will trying to use this to write a Pi memory at the same time cause any problems? I assume that i can use one of those cheap memory card to USB adapters that i use for transfering pictures from my camera to interface the card. Is this true?

I'm always nervous doing things the first time. Huh

No.  Yes.  No.  Yes.

Really, that link referenced earlier said specificly there wasn't. *kicks the internet for lieing to me*

Well, i'm going to do it on the linux machine anyway since it is a faster down load.

Does the V2 img contain the correct chainminer? or does that need to be downloaded too?

Here, you needing to go to this link and reading up:

http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setup

You can using the chainminer on image.  You can doing git pull to getting more updated one - is extra optional.

Win32DiskImager works perfect in windows to throw the image on an SD card: http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/

Don't panic after you load the image to the SD card and afterwards it shows the max capacity is like 54mb or something. It always shows this way in windows after loading a linux image on it.

your original image should have the v2 miner on the card at /opt/bitfury/chainminer_v2_M_board

you can just run the "miner" program in there or if you want you can update the source (git pull;make) then run with the latest code.

no need to make a new image.

you can make the sd card at a windows system, but to change the ip settings you need to either use a monitor/KB with the bitfury, or use linux to change the network interfaces file.

The chainminer in the image works, but not optimally. once the sd is in the rpi with the right ip settings, do this:

ChainMiner for M Board Version 2.X boards
DO not use this guide for Version 1x m-boards.
It will fry your chips.  This is only meant for Version 2 of the M-board.

I apologize for grammar as I took 2 sleeping pills and I can barely feel my fingers.

1.login as pi or root

2.  type "nano /run/shm/.stat.log"   if you wish to see the performance of all the chips on your board before upgrading chain miner.
(optional step)
3.(backup your chainminer version)  (this creates a copy of the folder)
a. sudo cp -a /opt/bitfury /usr/bitfury.backup
b. cd /opt/bitfury/
c. pwd  (make sure you are in /opt/bitfury)
d. ls -al (or type dir)
e. rm -rf chainminer  (this removes everything in the chainminer folder)
4.  make sure you are in the /opt/bitfury directory and not in /opt/bitfury/chainminer (it should be deleted anyway
5.  type "git clone https://github.com/bfsb/chainminer.git"
6.  it should now start getting the chainminer git.
7.  now type "cd chainminer"  you should now be in the chainminer directory
8.  type "make"
9.  Its going to take 5-10 minutes to create the chainminer...maybe longer.
I got some warning but everything was fine after it all finished.
it will go back to a  bash prompt when done.
9a.  Just wait...this is the longest part of doing this change..
10.  sudo reboot

It is much better version, and will cut your error rates massively. I went from 10% errors to 3%, and still have some tuning to do that should bring it under 2%

Actually, I smoked my V1 MB, the V2 is a replacement, so my original image is V1.

I immediately ran into problems on the linux machine. the card didn't seem to show up, but i expected as much since in have so many hubs and USB miners attached to that machine. So i'm back to winXP on my netbook, mainly because it has a card reader built in to it. I'm going to try the imager Morblias recommended

does the rest of the card become visible once loaded to rPI?  I just had to replace a couple of the 4gb cards that were sent out with the hardware with 8gb cards and I'm hoping that I'm not loosing half the space on each card.

Yeah it shows up on the RPi. I think in windows it creates a new partition to load the image file on, but then that newly created partition does not show up in windows or something like that.

another that looked very good 2 month ago but now has a ROI of about 3 years. Graphic cards to mine ALT continue to be the most profitable approach. With my 2G cards (already paid for) I'm spending $120 in power and getting BTC 1.2 a month

I've placed orders for additional H boards on the 19th, 24th and 25th.  And by the looks of my order numbers and the number of units left in the store, very few people seem to making additional purchases.  I can't believe people haven't snapped-up the remaining stock in minutes.  What gives?*

*Please, no discussion of ROI is necessary if you respond to my post.  I've heard it ALL!  And am completely bored with annoying ROIer rants.

I don't know about everyone else, but i'm running out of money. heh,

I haven't spent any "money" on these recent orders.  I'm using this exciting new form of currency called Bitcoin!  I "mine" for BTC with my existing hardware and then use that BTC to buy new mining gear.

It's quite exciting but a bit complicated.  There's a forum where you can learn all about it ... https://bitcointalk.org/.  Check it out!   Grin
