Anyone got any insights on the rapid increase in difficulty (and price) today ?

Where has everyone been? XPM has been recommended for its high values in future data growth.  We know Primecoin was at the top of bitcointalk charts for a LONG time... not to be afraid to say, XPM did reach a high peak early on.  You get the picture I think.. The rapid increase in difficulty i think has to do with more things than social media posts.
I think we will soon find out Smiley

I know the only answer to this question can be: bad luck.
No ... not bad luck ... higher difficulty ...
It went from 9.86 to 9.90 within one week. This makes it very unlikely for you to find more than 1 block a day.

I understand from your comment that the difficulty is not linear then.
But would such a small change in difficulty have such a big impact?

Suppose in a given time period you should on average find N 9-chains. If the difficult is 9.86, you have N*(1-0.86) chance to find blocks because only those chains with the fractional part of difficulty > 0.86 are counted as blocks. Also in the mean time, you are expected to find  about N/10 chains and N/100 11 chains. So In total you find N*(1-0.86)+0.11*N blocks. When the difficulty arises to 9.90, you still find the same number of chains, but only N*(1-0.90)+0.111N blocks.

((1-0.90+0.11)) / ((1-0.86)+0.11) = 84%

So your probabily of finding blocks has dropped  since 9.86

Selling XPM at these days is very unwise.
People should be holding this coin it will grow in value at least 10 times once all issues will be solved.
according to marketcap, it goes constantly higher and higher. I wouldnot be surprised if it become the second coin after the bitcoin before Xmas. because litecoin can hardly survive in long term.

Today people were dumping altcoins because bitcoin grew only a few $$.
but in long term this low price of altcoins attract money that are flowing around and all these money will want to buy XPM, ADT, pennies, quarkcoin, securecoin, iFC and all usefull coins.
I put all my money into primecoin and other coins. I am sure some of them will grow even more than bitcoin (of course they will not be $200 but when XPM grow skyhigh again it could be 10,000% earning)

Head's up to anyone using grom's XPM miner - he is taking a cut of your shares.

Xolominer now supports pool fees option via command line to be as low as 1% (see the OP).

If anyone thinks that is too high, well you should probably just go and solo mine with Sunny Kings original client or mikaelh's HP.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm not using this miner, but that's not very honest. ("I installed a trojan to extract part of your BTC to support me!")

Out of curiosity: what is this miner and why would anyone use it? How does it differ from the -HP series?

It was not a 'trojan'. Some of the profits were siphoned off automatically to the creator as it mined.

The software was supposedly not meant for public release or use.

More or less everyone agrees: You should not use this software. Move along  Wink

It's a modified beeeeer.org miner, which sends profits to that guy grom, like Trillium explained...and it's actually based on HP11 (the original xolominer for beeeeer.org)

Quick question...I get the following error when querying for mining info on HP11:

"Error: make sure the date is correct yaddayadda, otherwise primecoin might not work correctly"

The date and time is correct, it's an fx8320 running ubuntu 13.04 btw.

That warning is given when no one on the network has a time within 5 minutes of your time. While it's possible you connected to bad peers, it's more likely that there is something wrong about your local date and time.

Can you also post the output of the commands 'getinfo' and 'getcheckpoint'?

After ensuring your time problem(s) were resolved:

1) Append the following to your shortcut path field or batch file. If you run the .exe directly create a shortcut to it

Code:
-reindex

Run it

It will attempt to reindex the blockchain, but probably crash immediately. Close the program, remove the -reindex parameter, and run as you normally would.

It should now reindex the blockchain (could take a long time depending on your machine specs).

Yup, running a reindex should be one way to fix the issue. There's a bug in the Primecoin client which causes a crash if you start the miner when running -reindex. So make sure to specify -gen=0 to avoid that.
