You are 99% correct. Faucets still do exist, but are mainly used on testnets and newer networks. Without it, it just wouldn't work.
Same thing happened with BTC years ago, they had to give it away freely to get adoption, and in return they got user testing and some feedback.

I'm having a terrible time with FreeBitco.in. I put my own money into their "premium" service and bought their FUN coin over five years ago. Now, when I try to take my money out and send it to my Binance wallet, it's a nightmare.

What currency did you request withdrawal in? I don't know if anything have changed with the platform but I previous times, bitcoin withdrawals usually gets processed way more quicker than withdrawals in fun token.

freebitco.in went to complete shit a long time ago, if you scan just the last few pages here you will see they have no intention of making things better or fix thier shit.
for now, you just have to wait until they process your withdrawal.
