Rob needs to start posting here again.

In Testnet we are currently testing a feature called Research Age. This allows EVERYONE to get paid eventually for his/her research activity. Unlike Bitcoin, you do not need a high sophisticated mining hardware or a high balance in other POS currencies to stake your block.

It will be only a matter of time that you get your fair share of what you have mined (= researched in BOINC).

Dont get me wrong, right now you will also be fully paid on your research activity. But with many many more researchers/miners in the future we will need the Research Age feature because of the limited block number per day.

We all need to start posting here again. LOL. But it's hard to do when we're so active on the other.  I mean, 13.5k post over there just one a single thread!

Guess we have to work harder!

Gridcoin is currently UNDER PROMOTED and we need to get the word out!

I think we should inform everyone else in the Cryptocointalk thread about this thread and urge them to post regularly.

Agree.

I mean.. really, we have so much tech and very very active development in Gridcoin, but yet we are still pretty much unknown. And it's not a new coin! We have been around!

I would suggest starting a new thread once ResearchAge is finished and then start with good documentation about setting up everything and explanation how the coin works exactly and then also try to be active around here.

Not sure actually. Could be the same problem CCEX and BITTREX face the last time with money supply going out of whack which has been fixed.

Statement of the dev regarding Research Age as new payment system
(https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/1331-new-coin-launch-announcement-grc-gridcoin/?p=191018)

Quote
I just wanted to make a statement about the future Research Age payment algorithm as it relates to block caps and investments in Gridcoin:

In addition to regular testnet testing over the next few weeks, we will not go live with it until all of these points are addressed:
No payment will be made on POR blocks with a submitted age > 6 months.  A zero POR block will be staked and the age will start over.
A superblock with verified user magnitude in it must exist at least once per month for any magnitudes spanning > 30 days, to assess a good midpoint magnitude - to arrive at a good average mag.  Those values will be used and added to the historical average for the staked block.
*Neural network will be modified to take daily snapshots of mags and send the information to the coin to have exact magnitude averages.
Magnitude out of bounds checks must be enforced: Any magnitudes posted varying a greater percent than the high fluctuation percentage will not be counted in the averages.  The algo will take into account rising mags, falling mags etc, but for example, a mag that is out of bounds will not be counted in that days average.
A certain high limit will have to be imposed for the absolute highest magnitudes, possibly 20000~ - this must be done to create some sort of maximum subsidy cap.
A max subsidy of BlockMax * 180 will be added just in case.
Subsidies will be paid using the agreed magnitude unit so as payments for the day are subtracted from the kitty daily (IE no coin overpayments per day).
If a start magnitude is unavailable for some reason, the POR will be zero, and age will start over at that point.
Timespans < 30 days will use verified superblock start mag, end mag and midpoint mag.
Timespans > 30 will use verified start, stop, and midpoints - plus the NN avg info, as soon as it is added.  This will be added before we go live.
Conditions outside of these result in a staked POR blocks of 0 for POR, but with interest paid.
POR age accrual always starts over as of the last POR block staked.

Help test Research Age in testnet the following way, as described by pakaran on the main forum (https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/40141-testnet-research-age/#entry190900):

Quote
Here's my draft tutorial:

So you want to help by running a testnet node, but don't know where to start?  Thanks in advance for your help.  The more people on testnet, the faster it will get confirmations, which makes things far easier for the development team.

Testnet is completely separate from mainnet; they run on different ports, so you can run both at the same time.

If you have specified an RPC port in your gridcoinresearch.conf file, see an important note below at the *.  Otherwise, your existing file will be used, and work properly, automatically.

In either case, move to the directory the executable is in (Windows users: Start -> run, type cmd, then enter
cd ProgramFiles/Gridcoinresearch/
and start the Gridcoin client with the --testnet argument:
Linux:
$ ./gridcoinresearch --testnet
 Windows:
gridcoinresearch.exe --testnet
You can also create a shortcut on Windows (or trivial shell script on Linux) to start the program with the appropriate argument.

Now let it run.  As with mainnet, you will need at least some coins to mine or stake.  At the moment, there is no fountain on testnet, so feel free to ask for some coins in this thread, or in the #gridcoin channel on Freenode IRC (if you don't have an IRC -- Internet Relay Chat -- client, there's a web-based one at https://webchat.freenode.net/, and you can just type #gridcoin under "Channels:").

Once you have coins, it's "hurry up and wait" time: you'll still need to send a beacon (if not done automatically), get into a superblock, and then wait for PoR/PoS rewards.

Thanks again for helping out!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*If you have specified an RPC port, then using the same configuration file will not work, since your main and testnet client will both attempt to attach to that port.  You will need to edit the file, and change the port number to a different one.

First off, copy your gridcoinresearch.conf file from ~/.GridcoinResearch/ to ~/.GridcoinResearch/testnet on Linux, creating the directory if necessary.  On Windows,  copy it from AppData/Roaming/GridcoinResearch/testnet to AppData/Roaming/GridcoinResearch/testnet.

Alternatively, you can create a new configuration file, remembering to set your BOINC email address if you want to mine rather than being an investor:
email=you@provider.com
In any case, change the RPC port in the "testnet" folder's copy of gridcoinresearch.conf to a different one, save, and THEN start the testnet client as outlined above.

Gridcoin Research 3.4.7.3/MSI=28.1
Leisure Upgrade
(Mandatory for TestNet)

- Created TestNet version of NoBlocks to filter out old clients (found some on 3.3.9.9 in testnet!)
- Fixed issue where client may lose vote data during a full sync from zero; and prevent GRCMagnitudeUnit from not being populated

so I made a first version of a document explaining how Gridcoin works: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PE4Rb6JylkVxj031pHW6aNPU-PLh_VenLHTkgqcZ2NM/edit#heading=h.w0am5v95932e

What do you think of it?

Good job on the text file, but I think an infographic will be a lot more effective for this.
