If you were sat in a coffee shop or walking down the street, how do you stop your wif-fi connection leaking information about you; and then you and your BTC spends?

good enough?

Just disable wifi on the device until you need it and can connect securely. If in doubt, remove the battery.  Wink

Your mobile phone company almost certainly logs your phone's every movement, wifi on or not. Remove the battery and sim card.

edit: @ r-ando - no, Norton products are laughable garbage.

So perhaps the mobile wallets should be forgotten about.

Why?

There is no such thing as perfect security, just varying degrees of insecurity and associated inconvenience. If you're really wanted by the powers that be, it doesn't matter, they'll just bundle you into a black van and you'll never be seen again. For the rest of us, reasonable precautions will keep you reasonably safe.

Actually, I was wondering about using BTC via your mobile device and or computer in a [coffee] shop vs. DRK

It strikes me that DRK is 100,000x better for mobile devices than BTC

What is the roadmap for Darkcoin after Darksend+ is perfected and open sourced?

As was stated by Darkcoin's lead developer eduffield today:

Darkcoin will focus on providing a host of anonymity services using the Darksend implementation. This would mean my next project would be to rewrite electrum to use the masternodes to anonymize funds, then an android wallet that can use Darksend, then iPhone, etc. The foundation would also be tasked with trying to get businesses to accept Darkcoin and expand the user base.
It means that ALL users will have an out-of-the-box nearly perfect anonymous payment solution, which could be a big deal in the near term future.

I was wondering if it is possible to send anonymous messages to an address with darkcoin.
So that the reciever could potentially even read the message within his wallet.
Kinda like BitMessage built into darkcoin.

THAT would be so awesome.

I know that I can sign a message with darkcoin, ... hmm... but not sure if this is the same.

My goal is, to one day be able to send someone a serial number (or similar things) back after he anonymously payed me with darkcoin.

Yes. This is basically how the ip obfuscation tech works that I detailed a few weeks ago. It could very easily be turned into an encrypted messaging service.

Answer is posted already.

I'd love to have in-wallet messaging. No reason not to have this and I'm sure this is something easy to implement, especially with other coins already having messaging/chat features.

You're right - it doesn't matter what connection you use, BTC is traceable, DRK via DS+ isn't. You can still be pinpointed in spacetime, but nobody can prove what you were up to transactionally. Assuming you cover your phone screen and nobody nearby is Van Eck phreaking you with a portable SQUID.

Ideally, you'd just send a coded txt message to a hot brunette in Panama who's forever indebted to you because you once saved her entire village from a plague of zombie alien tentacle-horrors, and she'd do the Darksend for you with dumped privkeys written in rapidly fading ink sent via burner carrier-buzzards. Or something. Don't forget to wear a pretty gingham frock and a good wig.

Or just wait a few weeks for DarkTransit. Wink

I think the developers have at least some responsiblity making the app as secure as possible or establishing some best practices guidelines. If not, the niche in the market for a mobile wallet for cryptocoin investors who are privacy advocates and also I.T. security experts might be too small to warrant the time and effort developing it.

+1.

It would be like sending messages to a darkcoin address. Both anonymous (so that you don't know who sent the message, and can't answer) but also not anonymous (so that the senders address is known to you, but only you, so that a private conversation can take place).

It will not be possible to answer an anonymous message, because that would compromise the whole darksend anonymization process. (or could there be a way?)

Ofcourse sending a message should cost a small amount of DRK, maybe 0.01 or something, so that eventual SPAM could be limited...

Question is if messages are embedded in the blockchain or simply being broadcast by masternodes and probably saved and managed in the users wallet.dat?

Your thoughts evan?

I think 1) ip obfuscation is first, 2) any service will be based on ip obfuscation + Masternodes.

Because we live in a nanny-state, where people are taught not to think for themselves, to learn helplessness and always ask "who is in charge?" ... "who do I have to ask for permission?"

This seems like something worse. The expectation that everything be done for them with obtuse, broad questions, which presume an oversimplified blanket reality, and cannot possibly be answered.

A mobile device a totally different beast to a PC. I have run exclusively linux-based OSs for almost a decade now and can be fairly confident that any system I install is clean upon installation. To do the same on a mobile device I don't think there is any way other than by voiding your warranty. Iphone - no. Windows Phone - no. Android - no.  Although Android is open source all manufacturers and some operators install their own skins on  devices, and come with GApps installed, which are not open source. Of course being open source does not guarantee it is 100% secure, nor is closed source a sure sign of malintent, but I just want to illustrate that we are not dealing with PCs here, where more control is possible. An unofficial app can shun all responsibility but an official app probably doesn't have that luxury.

In wallet communication would be necessary for people to one day adopt an approach of : I can do the whole transaction through Darkcoin using only Darkcoin from anywhere in the world without risk, from A to Z...

If you eliminate risk so the only risk to a financial transaction anywhere in the world becomes the user not following the procedure(making backups, no risk of getting compromised by hackers, no risk of getting tracked by bad actors, no risk of having all your financial activities on a public ledger fro competitors to analyze, etc) If this is what is desired... hahaha, it will be a revolutionary new marketable product and potentially the paradigm shift.

What I would suggest is instead of charging per message, you create a membership system, possibly managed by the Darkcoin foundation, possibly you could download a choice of different client versions. Some clients could cost an amount to pay for a year's membership like anti-virus software and include the different messaging services, etc, maybe eventually video conference calls, etc.... Some could be basic and free and have only a very limited basic service. So the Darkcoin foundation could become a multi level self sustainable organization that would immensely benefit society if not only anonymity seekers by helping to increase productivity on a never before seen scale, and... and then the Darkcoin foundation could take these monthly procedes and distribute them to masternode operators every month and do advertisement and do charity stuff, and do.....

I know I wasn't supposed to do any more idea play today, lol. Have a great day everyone.

Membership implies record-keeping, so no. Keep it volatile, and therefore untraceable.

I'm quite aware of these points.

My point is that, if you pay a company to make closed-source software that is known to have tons of major flaws and backdoors, there's no answer to the "make it safe for me yet?" question. There's no way to ever really know, and the inquiring party makes clear that they are utterly unable to determine anything for themselves, much less do anything about it. The party asking is a danger to themselves through their refusal to learn even the most basic of things.

They act like it's a toaster and wonder why a "plain answer" isn't available to them. They're far too detached from reality to help. It's up to them to step up and learn at least a little something about the topic before anyone can help them.

The inordinately stupid will sabotage themselves and then blame everything except themselves.

About the best you can do for preventing wallet theft in such an environment is random directory name, random wallet file name, encrypted config file that stores that data... But even then, when active and memory-resident, malware written to target it will likely sort it out. All mobile devices are backdoored like swiss cheese, no better than MacOS and Windows. All the "automatic do it for you" crap requires backdoors. Stupid people demand a complete absence of security to have everything done for them by others instead of taking responsibility.

It's like people who have AAA in case of a flat tire. Seriously? You're too fucking stupid and lazy to change a flat tire? I have AAA because I know all ICE cars are engineered failures. I know there are some things that you can't fix on the side of the road. But a flat tire? Come on... Pathetic.
