WTF does anyone need an installer for 

Hmmmm....try to look at it from a noob point of view, after all, we were all noobs once, even you. The installer is the top, uppermost link that says windows - so instinctively that will be the one that a noob will click on. They'll install it, it won't work. They'll uninstall it & leave thinking "WTF was that?".

To be adopted (which is what everyone wants), it has to be clear & it needs to work. Simple.

What are you refering to as "binary version"? Darkcoin-qt.exe is a binary, darkcoind.exe is a binary too.

You can download the installer or the binary versions. The installer version is the one that does not work - sorry if I wasn't clear enough

That's weird though, since both share the same file: md5sum for both darkcoin-qt.exe files are identical. Which implies there is something wrong with the installer and the registry setting it is doing.

I'm quite confused. This is what I've always seen when I go to the download page:



All this time I've just been downloading the "Windows (zip)" file and then wherever I unzip it to, double clicking darkcoin-qt.exe in the \32 directory to run the Darkcoin wallet. I've never had any wallet issues but neither have I known I was running the "binary version", I just assumed there wasn't an installer (which I thought was something that would come eventually when the whole project is out of beta). I downloaded "Windows (zip)" because the other option is "Windows (32-bit)" and I'm running 64-bit so assumed "Windows (32-bit)" would be the wrong version for me.

This is very confusing. As well as getting the installer version issues fixed (as per PatMan's posts), we need far greater clarification around this labelling. There should be a "windows installer" version or a "run directly" version. Non-technical people won't know what all this means. It's probably one of the reasons why someone like Bagholder010 (who had the 14K DRK on Mintpal and got another 14K DRK during the V2 shenanigans) doesn't know how to use a wallet on his PC; it's too complicated having odd terminology like this. The wallet should be easily downloadable by noobs and non-technical people with an easy upgrade process that actively assists people to ensure they don't write over their wallet.dat. The labelling on what's being downloaded needs to be much clearer and consistent. The techo/boffin aspects around the wallet are still way too dominant for widespread adoption.

Lonecrouton this is EXACTLY why crypto has so little take-up. Mainstream PC/tablet users DO NOT double click on executable files to run software. They "install" whatever app they're wanting to use then go to the start button to run it. If crypto is to achieve any level of mainstream acceptability it HAS TO confirm to norm in the way apps are distributed, installed and run.

The rest of us here (especially if we're running MNs) know all about where the files are, what some of them do and how to fix syncing/blockchain issues (peers.dat, etc). But anyone who's not confident dabbling around within the file structure of their device (which is millions and millions of people) will just be completely turned off by the need to find their way down to a directory and run a specific executable.

For what reason is a hard fork required or is it trolling?

To clarify Darkcoin is a very innovative project we have done several hard forks so far to implement new features into the software.  We recently implemented a successful hard fork to enforce masternode payments. Right now, a change in the way fees are paid in the anonymization process is necessary to harden Daksend and we will probably use a hard fork again to implement this.  Having said that,  the development team invented months ago the Multi-phased fork or "Spork" which is a way safer way to implement this sort of changes and is instrumental to Dakcoin's accelerated development pace.

 In response to unforeseen issues with the rollout of RC3, the Darkcoin development team created a mechanism by which updated code is released to the network, but not immediately made active (or “enforced”).  Communication is sent out to users informing them of the change and the need for them to update their clients.  Those who update their clients run the new code, but in the event of errors occurring with that new code, the client’s blocks are not rejected by the network and unintended forks are avoided. Data about the error can then be collected and forwarded to the development team.
Once the development team is satisfied with the new code’s stability in the mainnet environment - and once acceptable network consensus is attained - enforcement of the updated code can be activated remotely.  Should problems arise, the code can be deactivated in the same manner, without the need for a network-wide rollback or client update. No one knows. All things considered, price is holding up pretty well. Difficulty hardly changed and the masternode count hasn't dropped (if anything, it increased). What selling you are seeing are traders. Most true investors that have the coins to move price are already putting them to work in masternodes. It's an unfortunate event, but it will be fixed and DRK will be stronger for it. I am over 2014 though... the forks, the enforcement issues, the masternode exploit, now Darksend being problematic, I can't wait to start 2015 fresh.

Why would you choose 2015 as an arbitrary bandage to all problems? Just curious.

No reason other than the fact that the coin itself is far different than it was at launch back in January and being that instantx code is already written, that leaves 7 weeks of testing and time for fixing DS. It would be nice to approach 2015 as a year of modest version updates (i.e. every 3-6 months) and focus more on adoption and awareness.

You should be getting around 2.6-2.8 Mh/s depending on how hard you push your clocks.

Take a Win 8.1 user for instance. If they have a device with a touch screen they'll scroll through that disastrous "Metro" interface until they find the icon for Darkcoin to run the wallet. Except, if they've downloaded the "binary version" because they saw "Windows (32-bit)" and knew enough to realise they're on a 64-bit version of Windows so clicked on the other "Windows (zip)" icon instead then (as per your "Download wallet. Double click on it. WTF does anyone need an installer for?" comment) the icon's not there because it's buried down in the unzipped directory from the wallet download and they have to know to right mouse click and "Pin to start" to get it up into the "Apps" collection. That may not sound like much to you but to the millions and millions of mainstream Windows users that always run a setup process to get their software "installed" they just won't have any idea about how to get it to run if it hasn't "installed" and provided an icon. And many will just walk away at that point as the software doesn't seem to install correctly.
