As an owner of the 3MH/10-miner set I would agree with your assessment 100%.  I will not be buying anymore of these devices until the new firmware is released and it has been clearly and factually demonstrated as being stable and usable.

Thank you. Now I won't have to worry about ASICs making my GPU's worthless over the next few months.

Quote
At the prices these are currently selling for we should not be getting "beta" hardware/software.

On what basis are you saying that the price is not worth "beta" hardware/software? From what I can see, prices are competitive on a per hash basis vs. GPU mining. You are basically trading off stability of GPU's for the lower power of the ASIC. When the ASICs become stable, their "stable" price will initially be higher on a per hash basis than GPU. Only when they can supply all the demand will the per hash price drop below GPU costs.

Quote
To make matters worse the firmware is all closed-source, so all the really smart guys on this forum can't even help out to fix these problems.  This is perhaps the most disappointing because the community is READY and BEGGING to help out and improve the software, but can't because of closed-source.  This is a real shame in my opinion...

Just because you don't have a hack doesn't mean it is closed-source. Enough code is posted for you to write your own mining program, or even a Linux version. Have at it, and please post it when you are done. The problem is, getting someone with the know how to do the hacks.

At this point, the ASICs are unstable, but despite that, they still average 350 khs per miner for me. That includes the off-line time of the reboots. So, 2 miners have the hashing power of a R9 280x. I can set up a room full of Asics. Due to power limitations, I can't do the same with R9 280x's.

My review so far is that I am not happy with my order. I have a LA6M and received one working controller and one broken controller. The broken controller wont even show an IP. Apparently no one is doing quality control checks over there. This means I can only run 10 units while the other 10 are sitting around collecting dust  Angry. I am requesting a replacement controller from jack.

In theory, if you chain together both 10-port USB hubs to the single controller it should work...the controller's are supposed to be able to handle upto 20 miners.

Now how that works in practice remains to be seen.

I'd also suggest you jump over to the litecointalk forums and look for the Scripta thread...DrFranz & Chirale have a Rasberry Pi version of minerd working for these...it's not perfect but it can help you get going.  I've tested this version of Scripta + minerd and it does work -- the only catch is that it doesn't turn off the BTC chip so it still draws extra power....but this approach can act as a stop-gap until Jack makes this right for you.

Received LA3M today, thank you!

What's the good pool to mine Scrypt?
Maybe LTC only pool if there's speed issues with multipools?!

I've tried both "single" coin pools and multipools and haven't noticed much either way.  I think some of it is determined by the coin as well...I've seen 4MH rate highs on DOGE and 2200-2500 on SmartCoin and PotCoin.  I can't explain it though.

Waiting on that firmware update. Hope it soon and it fixes the reset glitch. Hate reconnecting each miner one at a time every few hours, very time consuming.

I placed order on 17th of February.I can see that all people that ordered after me already got their hardware....

Right after payment Jack confirmed that he got payment in BTC and address details on e-mail.
Since then no contact - no answer on skype, no replays on e-mail.
I don't know if package was shipped or it stuck on customs....

My recommendation is to not buy anything from him unless he improve customer support.
For now I lost 2750$...........

LTCRabbit is an excellent pool to use for LTC only.
https://www.ltcrabbit.com/#afkun1
I use them almost exclusively now after trying out several pools.

Thank you. Now I won't have to worry about ASICs making my GPU's worthless over the next few months.

I agree that these won't kill off GPUs anytime soon.  In fact after getting the LA3M I've decided not to sell off my 3MH GPU rig for at least another month or two.

I'm not sure what price you paid for your devices, but at $2750USD I genuinely was expecting fewer issues.  I've already had to replace a burned out PSU (tack on another $35USD).  Yes you're correct in that I'm trading off watts for stability...but hopefully the next firmware release will make this all worthwhile.  That combined with Jack's efforts to improve his logistics should hopefully resolve some overall problems as well for most folks.

Just because you don't have a hack doesn't mean it is closed-source. Enough code is posted for you to write your own mining program, or even a Linux version. Have at it, and please post it when you are done. The problem is, getting someone with the know how to do the hacks.

The reason I bemoan the partially closed-source approach is because there's plenty of folks here on the forums (bitcointalk and litecointalk) who've expressed interest in helping the LightingASIC team resolve bugs more quickly vs. relying upon L-ASIC to deliver.  You're right though I don't have much grounds for bitching about this because I'm not a developer so its not like I could have helped them anyways.

In that case you've had better luck than me...the first day or two I was seeing numbers on the dashboard in excess of 4MH...now no matter what pool or what settings I barely get to 3MH...most of the time it's somewhere between 2500-2800...so not entirely what was promised but also clearly not a total flop-show.

Well I finally received my tracking from LA.  Had to call DHL to find it.

I will be receiving an order from a different supplier as well next week, with an original wiibox controller.  I will post results from testing the LA controller vs the original wiibox.

I tried 20 on one controller and it doesnt work. It lags and they all crash after a couple of minutes. 10 works fine though. I really dont want to run the sha-256 cores because of the greatly increased energy draw.

I'm really interested to see how this works...couple of questions to keep in mind when comparing them:

1. Is the Wiibox still in all Chinese?
2. Stability better or worse than the LightingASIC version?
3. Does the Wiibox controller handle 20 miners because the LighteningASIC one doesn't seem to.

Cheers!

Man seeing all this firmware problem, I wouldn't mind contributing if someone started a bounty to get a working/stable firmware for these little guys. Sort of what the community did with the Cairnsmore CM1's boards, when enterpoints firmware wasn't good.. Maybe get a little fund going, paid to an escrow address, so no indian givers

I got my LA6M today and have make any tests.

At this time I use only LA3M. I've built a MESSY-WOOD-TEST-RACK.  Grin
Tomorrow I build up the second LA3M and I'll measure the power consumption.

My experiences:
1. Setting up Operation -> no Problem
- Install one device
- Set up SCRYPT- and SHA356-Pools
- Activate DUAL-Mode (check both algorythm)
- Wait until the device is hashing

2. Reconfigure
- Deactivate SHA256-Mode (Uncheck it)
- Restart Controller
- Wait until the device is hashing
- Connect all other devices to USB-Hub

Finish!

BUT, I've three devices where are very lazy. I changed the USB-Cable with better USB-Cables (Data-USBCable, these are thicker and shielded). Since I've changed the USB-Cable of two devices, these are not longer lazy, except the third Miner1:11 (See Picture below).  Grin

I think I'll change all USB-Cable. Eventually the USB-Hub too.

I reached the best hashrate with a clock of 850MHz. Hashrate is between 3.2 and 3.3Mh/s.

Hmmm... This was on wafflepool. I will have to try a LTC only pool.

Well, ran 5 overnight on Wafflepool @ 900, and did not notice any difference.
Ran 5 all day on an LTC pool @ 900, and did not notice any difference (all same worker address).
I am running all 10 overnight on an LTC pool @ 900 with unique worker for each. That might stabilize the difficulty. If that helps, then I might retry 5.
