This seems pretty simple to me. Decentralized crypto-currencies are all about consensus. Vitalik suggested a hard fork rollback. The majority seem to want it...that's consensus!
Now roll it back.
Note - I was not affected by this DAO/ETH situation.
You go into the casino and win legally 50 Million with a new technique. Not the true story, true story: A crew of people invest 150 Million into a new casino with all new technique, someone finds a flaw in the code and cheats out 50 Million of the casino... What to do ? Of course roll back, fix the code, and "restart" the new technique casino... You didn't understand the image... the new technique was not the blockchain... but the different call of the contract by the attacker... That still doesn't change anything on the situation The point is, that we are not allowed to go back in time, just because we can. You always have side effects you don't foresee. For example if you go back and kill hitler you save millions of people. But maybe the russians may have taken lead of the world and bombed usa with an atomic bomb and killed even more... Your last comment actually is SO dumb and disgusting it proves pretty well What an ignorant, dumb and disgusting Person you are. Whenever there is a chance of saving Any Human life OF COURSE YOU SHALL SAVE IT - there is no Discussion necessary at all for such a question, regardless of other unknown things that MAY happen. We are not talking about Human life here but of a flaw, an error in a Piece of code that was exploited by some individuals without of the consensus or without the approval of the majority. Imagine a Bank that gets robbed and afterwards you are suing the Bank for getting robbed and not the robbers because they did such a decent Job and did Not get caught (at first)... Other coins implement voting Features so that Similar happenings can be circumvented by the majority.. The miners or HODLers Did you ever watch Butterfly Effect? That's more or less explaining, what I want to say. Because it seems you didn't understand it.

Why is everyone ignoring the fact ETH has just added a blacklist to the currency as some kind of "fix" to a 3rd party smart contract.
Are people really that naïve to think that this blacklist wont be exploited by political of financial bodies.
Why is ETH even getting involved in a 3rd party software bug, especially with something as controversial as a hardfork.
Now every smart contract developer can ignore BASIC UNIT TESTING and just deploy contracts cause if anything goes wrong the ETH centralized network will just add that contract to their blacklist too.

A steal of money is always a steal of money, if is conducted by a brute force attack or by finding an error in a program, makes no difference.
A real Man, (not a Cracker, because when there is something stealed is not a Hacker but a Cracker) that will find a bug take care to warn the devs to close the problem before someone find the way to steal something, using the bug found to steal, is not something that can be defended.
(P.s. i don't own DAO tokens) only a small ammount of Eth....)
Cheers

Thats more or less true with a soft fork, but a hard fork, is like going back in time an change the law. Example: You go into the casino and win legally 50 Million with a new technique. The casino owner is bankruped and the stock is dropping by 50%. He and his stock owners decide to go back in time and change the casino rules, so that the one, that wins the 50 Million at this day doesn't have to be payed out. Fair? But even the soft fork can be somehow discussable: The winner won the 50 Million, that can only be payed out a month later. But the Casino owner closes the casino, and sets all escrow funds on hold. In a casino, if you exploit to win, you're thrown out and blacklisted at every casino in town. I thought it was a smart contract platform? In a casino you have to have a lot of luck. Welcome to eth casino. Good Luck! omg u made it...lol ive never been soo happy 2 c u,lol u bring me luck Pleasure is mine. I'm glad you're so happy.

And we are not even talking about lives anyway, so the only thing is loosing money. I am also invested in both ETH and DAO, but still I know, that its wrong, to make a hard fork. Soft forks, can be maybe considered to put pressure on the attacker to give most of the money back. But for finding that exploit, he has deserved some money anyway. Companies like Apple, Facebook or Google pay a lot for finding exploits... If he didn't do it someone else would have have done it later and it would have been even worse scenario...

I believe a hack was inevitable. This is ground-breaking technology, experimental and bound to be riddled with bugs. How the dev team reacts to this will determine the future of this project. Right now, the central bank of Canada, along with 5 major banks, is experimenting with Ethereum in the guise of the digital dollar known as CAD-COIN. If Canada is doing it, than for sure others are watching or dabbling themselves (R3CEV consortium.) This kind of utility demands a ledger that is scaleable, reliable and trustworthy. This hack revealed a vulnerability in the programming language that MUST be fixed. This argument isn't about retribution or returning coins to naive investors, it's about instilling confidence that unexpected issues will be swiftly and properly dealt with. Ideology aside, Ethereum has the potential to change the global financial system, but no one will trust it unless they can author a contract that will run as intended. It's as simple as that.

Yes they pay if you talk of the exploit you found directly to the company, not using it, to stole money, and then if the exploit is confirmed they pay a reward..... this is not the way to manage exploits in the right manner....
