mmm, my spider sence tells me there is something up, I've noticed a couple of moderator 'edits' or just replies on now missing posts. I'm also ignorant of the benefit of multiple algos.

Thanks for the help! But I still feel like I'm doing something wrong.

i changed it to scrypt, and my cudaminer looks like this:
Code:
cudaminer -o 127.0.0.1:10889 -u rpcuser -p rpcpass

cudaminer says i'm hashing, but my CPU usage is still at 100%. How do you turn off mining within the wallet?

you can user
getgenerate to see if you are mining in the wallet and type

setgenerate false

to turn off wallet mining

Dev needs to explain how algo/block reward works!!

Every 2.5mins there's a new block for all the sha256d miners. There's also every 2.5mins a new block for all the scrypt miners and so on for all 5 algos.
But these blocks for each algo don't get found all at the same time, but one after the other with approximately the same time inbetween the found blocks. Which brings us to the overall/effective block time of 30sec. because 2.5mins = 150sec and 150sec / 5 algos = 30sec.

it goes like this:

block found for sha256d miners
30sec happy mining time without new blocks
block found for scrypt miners
30sec happy mining time without new blocks
block found for groestl miners
30sec happy mining time without new blocks
block found for skein miners
30sec happy mining time without new blocks
block found for qubit miners
30sec happy mining time without new blocks
block found for sha256d (2.5 mins in total have passed since the last block has been found by the sha256d miners)
...
from here on the cycle continues until we've all been killed by flying shark-raptors with chainsaws and lasereyes.

How does this work? If I had 100 scrypt miners, I'd have about 100MH/s maybe. One of those $10 USB ASICs does 333MH/s in sha256. What does it do to make this fair?

each coin has a different difficulty so that the diff is proportionate to the work done on that algo. e.g. if loads of people mine sha but no one on scrypt. the sha diff will be high but scrypt will be low etc

Look at the difficulty that is what makes it fair.

"difficulty_sha256d" : 23628.48114079,
"difficulty_scrypt" : 2.71698568,
"difficulty_groestl" : 2.26799684,
"difficulty_skein" : 10.12576206,
"difficulty_qubit" : 4.38270966,

The difficulty is different for each algo. Since it's easier to get a lot of hashes/s for sha256 the difficulty for that is a lot higher than for scrypt mining. Even if it's the same Coin.

Here are the current difficulties for each algo:

"difficulty_sha256d" : 23628.48114079,
"difficulty_scrypt" : 2.45593844,
"difficulty_groestl" : 1.96890491,
"difficulty_skein" : 11.39009453,
"difficulty_qubit" : 4.12496939,

as you can see sha256 (the only algo with asics available) has, by far, the highest difficulty.

tl;dr: one shit doesn't affect some other shit.

2893 according to my wallet

It does seem to be taking a while to catch up even though it's been open from the start more or less

maybe the blocks you mined were orphans?
