“The special economic zone in Crimea will be based on best examples in world practice and we are not going to substitute the Ukrainian system for a Russian one. We have a unique opportunity to capitalize on the current lack of a bureaucratic chokehold in Crimea. Our goal is to not make Crimea just like Russia, but a lot better and then spread the model throughout the country. The draft law regarding the special economic zone on the peninsula is in the making and we tried to include as many things that are on the minds of officials and business community as possible,” the minister for Crimean Affairs, Oleg Saveliev, told Russia’s Vedomosti newspaper.

Yes, that's the general idea. Especially since WTO is forcing Russia to close the tax heaven in Kaliningrad.

The tax heaven is not exactly in Kaliningrad. It covers large swaths of the Baltic, including Riga and Vilnius. A lot of Russian dark money is going to Latvia and Lithuania. Time has come to stop this madness.

Ukraine builds dam cutting off Crimea water supply

Recent satellite images show that Kiev is deliberately trying to cut off Crimea peninsula's water supply by building a dam. In the meantime Russian scientists are trying to find ways to supply Crimea with fresh water.

Experts from the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources are developing ways to supply fresh water to the Crimea from the Kuban River in the Krasnodar region to the North Crimean Canal which now receives limited water-flow, as Kiev tightens the lid on Simferopol.

“As one of options of providing the peninsula with water, we are considering an option of drawing water supply from the Kuban River and channeling it through the Strait of Kerch to the end portion of North Crimean Canal,” director of the department of public policy and regulation in the field of water resources ministry of Russia Dmitry Kirillov told Ria Novosti.

“The harvest will be partially or fully lost across 120,000 hectares of farmland that should be irrigated [by water from the canal],” Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fyodorov said in April, as cited by the Moscow Times.

They can't just close the dams, though. In the CabMin meetings Turchinov proposed cutting off water supplies by blaming construction/maintenance works.

The middle east is already like a barrel of gunpowder , if indeed things evolve how the article is summed up with a change in influence it will lead to another conflict in the area and .. more deaths for nothing.

Hmm , just realized that if they cut the water supply there at that point all the ukr land after the gates will suffer also.

However the head of Kherson Regional State Administration, Yuriy Odarchenko, claimed that the newly built dam is related to construction of a “water metering station” which “will be finished soon” and will give precise measurement on the “amount of water that will be transferred to the Crimean peninsula,” RBK Ukraine reported.

The excuse is there already , although let me say that it kind'a makes sense.

Hmm , just realized that if they cut the water supply there at that point all the ukr land after the gates will suffer also.

There are some other irrigation canals in the nearby area. So that water can be re-routed to the Southern Kherson oblast. Only Crimea will have the problem of dealing with water shortages.

The situation is complicated by the fact that this year the Crimean Tatar diaspora from Romania, Turkey, United States and several European countries will not be able to reach the Crimea.

Now they have to get the Russian visa (instead of the Ukrainian visa). May be he was referring to that.

Remember that Ukraine has a visa free regime for citizens of the EU, while Russia requires the EU citizens to take a visa before landing in its territory.

Here is what I got from Wikipedia.

Crimea is under Russian control and Russia applies its own visa policy there. However Ukraine announced that foreigners should comply with Ukrainian visa regime including obtaining a Ukrainian visa if one is necessary and that otherwise it may entail sanctions for "support of the temporary occupation of the Ukrainian territory". Crimea’s Tourism Minister proposed a visa-free regime for foreign tourists staying at Crimean resorts for up to 12 days and a 72-hour visa-free stay for cruise passengers.

Visa-free status was proposed, but not yet implemented.
