Throw away the PSU's (They suck and smell like burning electronics)

Order QTY 4 PSU Modular or PCI-E to 3 barrel plug cables.  

This gives you 12 total plugs from an ATX PSU.
10 go to the gridseed devices
1 goes to the hub
1 is a spare

For running scrypt only you can use a 350 or less PSU for 10 units.
For dual mode you will need 1200+ watts for 10 units *(At peak efficiency) or 1200 Watts for 20 at capacity.

US POWER

get some tools, or scissors:


Cut off the end of the power cord:


Peel back the coating to show the inner insulated wires:


Strip the three wires:


Place the wires on the PSU correctly!

EU POWER

1 -Get your supplied power cord:



2 -Get your Leatherman (seriously, everyone should have one), if you don't have a Leatherman, scissors or a wire cutter will work as well :



Just cut it! Make sure to cut the power supply end, not the end that should go into your power socket...

3 -Now strip the cut end. There should be three wires in there. EU power cables have a yellow/green wire, a blue wire and a brown wire. US power cables have a lighter blue, a grey and a black wire. Make sure to connect them to the power supply in the order I just told you. Like this:

Part 4: Setting up the controller

If you do not have wired internet available for the controller box you can easily setup a wireless bridge to run these or any other miners more reliably over wireless:

I use one on my laser printer and have used dozens of the 432s for various projects.  I have a box of them here that I'm not using at the moment.


Plug in and TURN ON the usb HUB



Plug in the power and network to the TP-Link controller



*Depending on your network setup, grab the MAC address from the back of the controller:

Find the IP assigned to your controller by reading your routers DHCP leases:



Visit the IP of the controller in a web browser

Fill in both the Scrypt and SHA pool information!

Don't leave the SHA pool blank!

In order to keep the miners running when you log off ssh you will need to use screen:

Power usage is roughly the same when running from Windows, Linux, RPi the new software allows the devices to run in single mode from these platforms as well.

Power Usage and Speeds: Power is based on killowatt readings for the controller, USB hub and 10 devices using a Corsair AX1200 PSU.  Divide out the power factor for actual usage.  The speed reports are only based on a 5-10 minute sample time so add +/-10% variance.  You can see in the screen cap that the per device speed is completely crazy this is mostly the controller and device quality.

Not sure where the power went.  900 is even worse so the bulk spot is between 700 and 800 on this set.

Temps were really boring in dual mode.  The massive fan on these take away the heat very well which is new for an ASIC maker.  Ambient 74F-78F Max device core 96F outflow air 86-90F.

Q: I get ttyACMx vs ttyUSBx and no shares are submitted even though the miners work and pull from stratum
A: This is normal.  Some linux versions may give you ttyUSB vs ttyACM.  Shouldn't matter. Post if it does.

Q:  Cablez's page he mentions several sizes/types (2.1/5.5 vs. 2.5/5.5)

Q: you mention 11 of barrel plugs...I don't understand what the 11th one is for if I only have 10 miners

I've never seen that, I'll put an order in and Yes!  

Q: One thing though...    You say to throw away those PSU's that come with it and get a modular PSU capable of 600+ watts
A: I just buy modular cables from cablez here on BTC talk.  He can make just about anything for any power supply.  I plugged all 10 gridseeds and the hub directly into my corsair AX1200 using custom made modular plugs.  You could keep the included PSU's or use a really low wattage PSU to only run in scrypt mode.

Q: my devices won't mine and syslog spits out a bunch of modem manager lines:

There is some logical limit per PCI-E lead that would make 3 devices the max.  I actually have 4 per right now, and I was thinking about 10-20 per lead since these are such low wattage.  The power guys (Cablez) might be able to give more specifics.  Basically if you plug to many in and they ramp up to max power you could melt some wires and plugs.

Could you please explain how to hook this all up?     I know you posted what cords to get as well, but I couldn't tell how you hooked it all up with the picture provided.   any help is appreciated and again great tutorial!

1) What will be the best way to run as much miners as possible on one controller / PC / RPI?

1: for over 100 I would use a PC with linux.  But I use PC's with linux for everything so not sure that's good advice.
2: the big miners will have support at some point.  Especially if lighteningasic stops being so effing greedy and releases firmware or devices and code to developers.  I offered to pay 1B for the ability to do multiple pools on the controller or run the devices in dual mode from linux.  That conversation ended quickly.
3: Again, I use AX1200's for everything so my opinion is really biased.  You could run at least 60 from an AX1200 or 1200i and hit peak power efficiency.

Cabling and space is always an issue with these gen 1's.  The same story with avalons, bfls, etc.  These things hog space because of cabling and the lack of a daisy chain feature.  I wouldn't waste time with hundreds until they come out with the 10 and 25 mhash boxes.  which are just these with a psu and boards daisy chained anyways.

Personally I'd say unless you absolutely have to buy 100 of these now, then don't.  Just too much "stuff"...wires, miners, fan noise, controller firmware issues, etc.  According to Jack there's supposedly a ATX form-factor version of these coming out...I bet in that version they'll stop doing this inefficient round miner form factor and cram a bunch of these chips onto one or more boards.  That's when the Gridseed chips will really be worth it. 

I had hoped that the these miners worked out better and even wanted to buy another set of 10 miners....but I won't be doing so after my current experience with them.  I wanted to retire my 3Mh gpu miner due to high power costs, but the way things have turned out looks like it'll be around at least for the next two months. 

For now I'm just going to wait this out a bit longer...there's a few companies out there which are working on better specs and price points relative to these..so my meager few $ will stay in my pocket for a while.

A: I just buy modular cables from cablez here on BTC talk.  He can make just about anything for any power supply.  I plugged all 10 gridseeds and the hub directly into my corsair AX1200 using custom made modular plugs.  You could keep the included PSU's or use a really low wattage PSU to only run in scrypt mode.

Excellent work! I enjoyed reading it. Very thorough,,,but...I have a couple questions.
What does FML mean?
What are the commands for telling the miners to run Scrypt only or SHA and Scrypt simultaneously?
I'm running cpuminer 2.3.2 and using Winblows 7
I'm going to try the freq' to 850MHz
Tried 750 last night, hashes went south so I backed off. I was thinking of trying it, especially after finding and reading the mfg spec' sheets. They'll go even faster than 850, as I recall.

Having problems getting more than 1 to actually mine (no errors just only mines the last on the list).  Running Scripta on RPi and gridseed's cpuminer for OS/Miner.  Here is what I'm running to try to start up the 10 Gridseeds I have (my Version B Controller was crapped out from get go).
