ODI series seems pointless this year TBH. Anyways some interesting encounter are coming, Warner-Smith duo entering in the South Africa's territory after "Sandpaper gate" Scandal (It happened in SA). Let's see if they face any backlash from the spectators.

Warner and Smith will be having their revenge against the lowly South Africans. The best batsmen since the time of Don Bradman lost precious 12 months, as a result of all this drama by the South Africans. What they did was against the law, but it is something almost every fast bowler does in test matches. They were unlucky to be caught. And the South Africans blew it out of proportion. Anyway... that's all past. This time, the South African bowlers are going to get destroyed by Smith.

Lowly South Africans --- lol why?

It was Australian team (Warner) who started fight first, Followed by Ball Tempering.

Is it too much to compare any player to the quality or run machine like Don Bradman, Smith is a really great Test player and in good form but he is yet to perform the same level like he plays in Test in ODI and T20.

Don Bradman never played ODI or T-20 format too so its okay for any Aussie fan to compare Smith and Bradman as both are good in Test format.

^^^^^ The "so called ball tampering" was not noticed by the umpires. It was the South African ex-player Fanie De Villiers who first noticed it and went ballistic during the live coverage.

I never said that what they did was the right thing. My only complaint was about the quantum of punishment. I felt that it was excessive and was influenced by the South African media's witch hunt against Smith and Warner.

I had pointed out one very important thing in the past. Many of the legendary pace bowlers had previously admitted that they used to tamper the original condition of the ball, using Vaseline, sweat, towels.etc. The so called "banana swing" was achieved by roughening one side of the ball by erasing it with a rough towel and then applying sweat or saliva on it (thereby increasing the weight of that half).

This has been going on for many decades and very few of the bowlers got punished for that. Smith and Warner went a step further and used sand paper (instead of towel). But the ICC laws don't differentiate between a towel and sand paper.

My questions are:

1. Why players using sand paper are banned, while those using towels are not punished at all?
2. Why three Australian batsmen were banned for ball tampering, when they didn't bowled a single ball during the entire innings? Are you saying that these three players are more guilty when compared to the bowlers who delivered those balls?

Players using towel to keep the ball dry especially in humid condition so its justified to use as long as they are not tapering the balls but why using sand paper at the ground, just to cheat right that is why they got banned.

One who get caught of their illegal actions will be punished, bowlers may argue that they are not aware of it so its not possible to punish every player.

That's what commentators do, what exactly they are supposed to do? Close their eyes and shut their mouth? when 100 cameras focusing on player's crotch "Hiding Sandpaper"

Quoting my old response for this..... i agree overall except "South African media's Witch hunt" Its Normal and that's how Media reacts to any controversy, Australian media reacted in same fashion.

Bhai, Believe or not Ball tempering has always been a big part of test cricket. before we had a few cameras on the ground now every move is monitored and it's completely different from Spot fixing. Make no mistake to mixing them up together.

One year ban is a very long period but CA took a tough and bold decision in this ball-tempering Saga due to backlash in Aus. not to mention Prime minister's comment was cherry on top IMHO.

Can you imagine the same thing happening in India if Virat Kohli gets caught in the same situation? Big No from BCCI even ECB or CSA.

Debatable... 99% times towels are used when ball gets wet, never witnessed in Test match so far except when rain interrupted the game-play and outfield is wet.

Nope, i completely agree on this argument, I had fair amount of suspicion on one bowler -- Mitchell starc-- He lost his reverse swing ability for 1 full year after this saga.

2. Starc forgets how to bowl an old ball. he used to be lethal with the old ball.
Quoting his statement when he earned Man of the Match taking 9 wickets in Durban against South Africa

Quote
He even told Cricket Australia's website, cricket.com.au, that it took a group effort to get the ball in the right condition for reverse swing.

What group effort? Ball tampering? not attacking but just wanna know what Aussie thinks about Starc. Shane Warne is very vocal about him may be due to personal grudes or may be he's hinting something very serious which lead to us Back to Sandpaper gate saga.

Don Bradman never played ODI or T-20 format too so its okay for any Aussie fan to compare Smith and Bradman as both are good in Test format.
A player who averages freaking 99.6 and played without any body protection or helmet when beamers were allowed and body line bowling was used to target the batsman's head when there were no helmets and the grounds were not small like today, to compare these two generation of players is not fair.
Don Bradman scored triple century in a day which is a feat no strikers with T20 hitting caliber will not achieve Wink.

Nope, i completely agree on this argument, I had fair amount of suspicion on one bowler -- Mitchell starc-- He lost his reverse swing ability for 1 full year after this saga.
For the ball to reverse swing you need the ball to be rough on one side and shinny on the other and with the new rules of two new balls in ODI took away the reverse swing, Mitchell starc did not play many Test either during those period if i remember correctly.

@ JSRAW, mersal & 7788bitcoin, thanks for the replies. I feel bad when they ban good players. Steve Smith is such a legendary player and we missed him for a full 12 month period. Shakib Al Hasan is another player who got banned recently. No one benefits from such bans.

Anyway... I don't want to divert the topic. Not many ODIs scheduled for this week and I guess most of the users will be busy with the PSL (which starts tomorrow with the first match to be played between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators).

3 New Bilateral Tours are coming up fellas.

- Australia Tour of South Africa 21st Feb (4 t-20 and 2 ODI)
- West Indies Tour of Sri Lanka 22nd Feb ( 4 ODI and 2 T-20 )
- Zimbabwe tour of Bangladesh 22nd Feb ( 1 Test , 3 ODI and 2 T-20)

The month of Feb/Mar/ Apr are the season of PSL and IPL. You won't find much interest in these ODI & Test series when IPL is in progress, as all the attention is towards this league. Only the native people will find these matches to be important and interesting.

@Vishnu.Reang  Sure thing bro. Dude you should drop text in IPL discussion thread.

According to my preferences
- Aus-SA series is interesting
- ODI Cricket seems boring this year due to T-20 WC
- Don't have much interest in other bilateral series.

And there is not much international cricket happening when IPL starts (29 March) so its fine.

There are only two events that I am interested to watch this year the first one if IPL and the second one is the T20 world cup. I do not have the patience and time to watch the TEST series and ONEDAY matches. T20 is the best source of entertainment in cricket for me.

I am not sure whether South Africa will be able to put up a strong fight against the visiting Australians (they managed to do so against England recently). If they succeeds in that, then the tour is going to be very interesting. Smith and Warner will be hoping to put all the bad memories behind them. But I don't think that the other two tours (WI/SL and Zim/Ban) will generate any interest globally.

South Africa failed to show any impact in the last T20 which was played yesterday with Australia, so do not expect much from them.

WestIndies are playing well in srilanka and have scored 142/2 in 32 overs. They have wickets in hand and they can score a reasonable target for the home team Srilanka. Shai Hope is not out on 73 and is the main focus for the WI.

SL winning the toss and deciding to bowl first in the 1st ODI match. WI lost first wicket quickly but then Hope's 115 runs innings along with Bravo and Chase contribution helped WI to reach 289/7 in 50 overs. In reply SL have started very well and are 79/0 in 10.5 overs. Fernando is on 36 and Karunaratne is batting on 33. WI require now couple of quick wickets to come back in the game.

Amazing match to watch with quite a few ups and down and in the end SL just manage to win it by 1 wicket and 5 balls to spare. Both teams really played well and just in the last De Silva ensured he stayed till the end which resulted for SL to win. WI made good comeback after good start from SL but that was just not enough in the end. Wanindu Hasaranga was named man of the match for his brilliant not out of 42 runs innings.

Did not get the chance to watch the match but, after hearing it from you I will definitely watch the highlights. It sounds like a very close match. Such matches rarely happen now days in one day cricket. Most of them are one sided matches.

Both teams done good job and West Indies was able to win at the end but they can blame their bowlers as too many no-balls and wides hurt them badly at the end Hero of match was Hasaranga who keep his mind cool lead the team for first ODI victory its really interesting match look like we have something to watch in this series.

Sri Lanka won a really close match and not West Indies. I am surprised to see Sri Lanka staying till the end even after loosing their wickets and winning the match with the help of Wanindu Hasaranga as he scored 9 runs in the 49th over which was crucial as they were not having wickets in hand. With an entertaining first match the series will be tightly contested rather than one sided affair.

Just now watched the highlights of the match. This was a match of nerves, very close match and very interesting. Next match will be more interesting and I am sure WI will come back. They played very well but lost. 9 run score by Wanindu changed the games outcome.

If anyone would have told me that Sri Lanka would be winning this match and that too in such a thrilling fashion, then I would have laughed at that person because even in my wildest dreams I would not have expected Sri Lanka to win this contest. Further I have to admit that I have underestimated the Sri Lankan team, and henceforth I’ll be watching their contests keenly as there’s an opportunity to make lots of money if they can keep giving such performances consistently.

The Srilankan win was unexpected one especially when West Indies were able to give them target closer to 300. The match was a thriller and i have not seen such an close ODI in recent times.

So you will be betting on Srilanka or WestIndies in the future matches ?
