After performing so well in the T20 format, England is once again faring poorly in ODIs. Recently they lost a match against Ireland at Southampton. They are not performing well in Manchester as well. They had Australia at 123/5, with almost all the top order batsmen back in the pavilion. Still Australia managed to score almost 300. I still expected England to win, but right now they are struggling at 76/4 after 23 overs, with the required run rate rocketing over 8 runs per over.

I did not expect England to struggle chasing a score of 294 runs, Bairstow is playing a Test innings with a strike rate of 43 which i never expected and the run rate is just 3.18 and Australia is bowling really well especially Hazlewood and Zampa and putting pressure on England by picking wickets on regular intervals and if England wins the match from this position i would be surprised as someone needs to play a special innings.
Right now England is struggling but still they are in as required rate is 8.15 and Bairstow and Billings on crease with Moeen and Woakes still to come we can expect some good end of this match even Aussies doing very good bowling specially as you mention Hazlewood and Zampa both wicket taking bowlers.

England lost the match. No one expected this result once the match was started. Aussie played a good game and come back strongly in the match. For the first time England are losing the series by 0-1. Let's see how they come back in the next match or is this their first series loss after the covid ?

Now Australia is in good touch after losing twenty/20 series as they have learned from their mistakes even still need some more work but today batting was good and then bowlers give some good support but England lost their touch as Roy is now not good for this team they must need Malan who was in good touch but still good match good result for Austratlia and peoples those watch this match.

Bairstow 84 and  Billings  118 couldn't save England from the defeat. Zampa and Hazlewood bowled superb especially Hazlewood who bowled 3 maidens in his 10 over spell and give away 26 runs only and tool 3 wickets. England needs other players to contribute in batting and not just focus on one or two players to do the scoring.

This match will boost the confidence of the Australian players as they played the match without Steve Smith and able to perform really well in the middle order even though the top order failed miserably and was reduced for 123 and half the side was in the dressing room and i never thought they would recover but Marsh and Maxwell played incredible well and the Australian bowlers did the rest of the job to trouble the England batsman.

Well as I said in the T20 thread, I thought that Australia winning the third T20 match would give them some momentum going into the ODI series and also that the team had 3 games under their belt after not playing for so long where as England has played a lot of cricket in the last couple of months and it shows with this victory. Australia looked in trouble early on but the middle order performed very well, Marsh and Maxwell had great games with the bat and helped Australia reach 294 which I thought was a good score at the time. England also started poorly but again it was the middle order that helped them get close to Australia more so the great knock by Billings scoring a century. This should be a good fought out series, lets see if England can bounce back.

I agree. Hazlewood performed brilliantly with the ball in both the T-20 and ODI formats and it is good to see him back in form so quickly. Marsh is playing consistently well too with the bat. England could have easily won this if someone supported Billings.

Both Bairstow and Billings scored more than half the runs themselves, but the rest fell quickly which is why the English side must be pretty pissed with themselves.

Word "Consistency" sounds bit exaggeration when talking about Mitchell Marsh, considering his recent 50+ knock in international game came after 2 years.  Tongue

Without Hazlewood, Australia could have easily lost this match. All the other bowlers were expensive, while Hazlewood conceded less than 3 runs per over in a match where the average run rate was almost double that figure. In two months, Australia will be playing a test match against Afghanistan. I expect Hazlewood to be included in the playing XI, along with Starc and Cummins.

I agree that Marsh isn't known for his consistency, but he was pretty consistent in this particular series. With Smith returning in the 2nd ODI, I wonder who will be dropped.

Australia will be playing a test match against Afghanistan. I expect Hazlewood to be included in the playing XI, along with Starc and Cummins.
They don't really need their entire firepower against Afghanistan which is why I don't expect all 3 of them to be a part of the squad. I think younger bowlers might be given opportunities in this case.

That is why he was declared player of the match. Indeed without him the result of the 1st ODI would have been different. English middle order took a break in the last match. I hope they do not do the same for the next 2 matches.

Both Bairstow and Billings scored more than half the runs themselves, but the rest fell quickly which is why the English side must be pretty pissed with themselves.
Even for Australia the bulk of the runs was scored by Marsh and Maxwell and if not for that partnership they would not have scored the runs, the difference in the match was the bowlers.

Zampa bowled economically but he was taken for runs in the final overs when England were trying to go for boundaries and so is the case with Cummins as he gave away 15 runs in the 27th over and another 15 runs in the 49th over. Against Afghanistan i am sure Australia will be resting some of the key players.

Before Afghanistan West Indies is also going to Australia so they have some good time for these both series and mostly Australian's way is rotation policy so they will give chance to some new coming players for this series is good before big tour of India after these two pracitce series is good for them.

Marsh is playing consistently well too with the bat.
Word "Consistency" sounds bit exaggeration when talking about Mitchell Marsh, considering his recent 50+ knock in international game came after 2 years.  Tongue
I agree that Marsh isn't known for his consistency, but he was pretty consistent in this particular series. With Smith returning in the 2nd ODI, I wonder who will be dropped.
Smith should replace Marcus Stoinis at the number 3. Recently English captain Morgan gave statement that next world cup is in India so he wants slow pitches for spinners. If that's the case then Australia could include one more spinner in the playing XI as well, that means one less fast bowler.

The all important 2nd ODI between Australia and England is about to start. The main highlights are that England will bat first as they have won the toss. Look like this time they will be willing to give target and restrict Australia.
Look like smith is not playing today.

Eh... No changes in the Australian squad, Just heard that smith got hit on the helmet during net session, that's why he's not playing.

England made 2 changes, Moeen Ali /Wood out - Curran brothers in.

England will be batting first. Steve Smith is unavailable for this match, and that would mean that there are no changes in the Australian lineup. For England, Sam Curran and Tom Curran are included in the playing XI, while the out-of-form Moeen Ali and Mark Wood would sit out. Surprised that Wood is not playing, and I guess he is out due to injury. Looked fit during the last match though.

Edit: heard that Wood is being rested for this match, which sounds strange.

It looks like Steve Smith is afraid of the bouncers after getting hit on the helmet by Jofra Archer in which he suffered a concession and now in the nets he is getting hit by bouncers and i am sure when he plays Test match against good fast bowlers they will be peppering him with bouncers rather than allowing him to settle Cheesy.

Match started and Hazlewood is continuing his impressive form as he started with a maiden, England needs to post a big total to put Australia under trouble and hopefully they will level the series.

Bairstow is gone. He was struggling out there and Starc got him. Now Joe Root will join Jason Roy, and they will try to build a partnership against Starc/Hazlewood. England batting lineup looks quite strong, especially the lower order. Everyone up to no.9 (Tom Curran) are capable of making good scores against quality Australian bowlers. BTW, need to see how Zampa bowls today. He is taking the wickets, but at the same time he is conceding too many runs.
