Looks like they've been aware of Bitcoin since at least May of this year, thus probably won't qualify, sad to say.

~Bruno Kucinskas

Their reply:

Quote
hello. we saw something come up on your discussion forum regarding
when we first heard of bitcoin, that it might disqualify us. we just
added bitcoin donations this december, only very recently
understanding how bitcoin might work for us. its true we were aware of
bitcoin previously, since we run a news service, we hear of many
projects. but we had not thought to incorporate a donation button or
start a wallet of our own until this month. what is the actual rule,
that may disqualify us? sad to hear this

Quote
I should add that we put up the donation buttons (litecoin too) directly in response to hearing about your offer, in order to meet your qualifications. Previously we had only accepted flattr. We also added a way for people to mine us bitcoin for the same reasons (also to promote these techniques & technologies). The fact that we posted a story about bitcoin once doesn't mean we accepted bitcoin previous to now, we did not. We saw that great conference panel about bitcoin for non profits & charity just recently, and wrote to you within days, but only after setting up our home page and wallet to meet the terms as described by your website

My main concern is in how this is a charity and not a new aggregator/blog. Antiwar.com actually goes around (in public) raising awareness of issues and does some charity work. Them being at the San Jose conference, raising money for issues (and working to promote other charities, like Sean's Outpost), was what convinced me that they may qualify.

Upaya

It's a stretch, albeit not a big one, and they are a deserving org, hence highly recommending that they get endowed.

Am I able to nominate a non-profit to be a recipient?

Bitcoin100 is not a structured organization, ad is owned and run by donors and anyone else wishing to help. So everyone is free to nominate and contribute.

Quote
http://www.theroadhome.org/

The Road Home accepts Bitcoin donations through a coinbase widget right on their donation page. On their Give link under Make a Donation, they have it split between cash donations on the left and Bitcoin on the right. They provide emergency shelter and run a winter shelter.

Any idea when they added bitcoin donations? I'm also curious as to how they decided on it.

I have an idea as to where to send our rejects, not meant in the derogatory sense: http://www.bitcoindf.org/

Quote
Our Charter:

The Bitcoin development fund was created to support projects that benefit the greater bitcoin community.  Our first donation of 1,000 BTC was made by Butterfly Labs which is a bitcoin mining hardware manufacturer.  If you would like to donate or become a member of our charity selection board, please email submit@bitcoindf.org or send BTC to 1ERVh27gZfPSDaaagL9R3W12xpMJ38ZBA7.

This would be ideal for the all the fine NPO's that may not qualify for a Bitcoin 100 endowment, but may have no real problem qualifying for a bitcoindf endowment.

A while back, Josh penned the following.

We have been calling and explaining bitcoin to a number of charities and trying to get them on board.  It's not exactly a quick or easy process.

If you've got some, by all means, submit them and we'll review them and/or add them as appropriate.  The BitcoinDF site is not finished, but we did want to get something up to move things forward.  That's why it was labeled as a sneak peek.

Hey again, I'm actually going to meet up with my friend who runs this organization tomorrow, I'll speak to him about the idea of taking bitcoin, see what his thinks about it. If he's down with it, we'll need to think of what the best way to implement it.

Hello,

I'm the one who is suggesting www.volodalen.asso.fr above. If there are any questions maybe I can answer them.

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi again,

I talked to my friend and he agreed that it would be a good idea. If you guys want to support his org let me know what I can do.

Bruce

ok I've setup him up with a wallet (as well taught him all about the security rules) and we've update the webpage to accept bitcoin, can be seen here:
http://www.volodalen.asso.fr/005aider/aider001.htm

Thanks,

Yeah, it looks like just after Thanksgiving this year. Does that disqualify them? Or is that recent enough and have an appropriate non-profit mission?

The best I can ascertain is that a fellow bitcoiner, perhaps not a BitcoinTalk user, somehow got The Road Home to accept bitcoins via their website.

On behalf of the Upaya team and all those we are working to serve, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to you and the full family of Bitcoin 100 supporters! This is an exciting time for Upaya as we've recently passed the 1,100 job mark and are busy preparing to launch our sixth partnership. This gift will be directly applied to those efforts, and together we will surely see some great results.

Thanks again for your time, consideration, and support!

All the best,

Nah, I think it's still ok. Besides, December isn't a real month, since a large chunk of it is eaten up by holidays and vacation time  Wink

Received this:

Quote
Elsa Hammond

Dear Rassah,

It has been suggested by a couple of people that I get in contact with you.

My name is Elsa Hammond, and this summer I am undertaking to row across the Pacific Ocean, from California to Hawaii - alone - to raise awareness of plastic pollution in the world's oceans.
I'm still looking for sponsorship and donations to fund the core costs of the challenge, and accept Bitcoin as well as other currencies.

Please see these recent news articles:

http://www.coindesk.com/blockchain-info-sponsors-british-woman-solo-row-across-pacific/

http://bitcoinprbuzz.com/elsas-pacific-solo-row-from-california-to-hawaii-seeking-bitcoin-sponsorship-and-donations/

And my website:

http://www.elsahammond.com/support/

http://www.elsahammond.com/donate/

Is this something that Bitcoin100 would be able to help with?

Thank you so much for reading,

Very best,
Elsa

and I replied with this:

Quote
I'll forward your request to our public discussion group, since the money we donate ultimately belongs to our donors, but I'm not sure they will approve to qualify you, since the purpose of our group is to raise bitcoin awareness by convincing charities who otherwise wouldn't consider it to accept it on their websites.

And another one:

Quote
Dmitry,

A Hat for Harold (www.ahatforharold.org) is a 501(c)(3) public charity based in Silver Spring, MD and has just begun accepting Bitcoin. Is Bitcoin100 still donating $1000 to nonprofits accepting Bitcoin?

If so, I would like to submit A Hat for Harold.

Thank you for the consideration.

I am starting again to contact NGOs to accept Bitcoin as donation option.
[..]
Hereby I get the things in my own hands now!
*throws gauntlet*

Ente

Time flies like an arrow.
It has been more than one year since I contacted an NGO close to my heart. I was in contact with the Board of Directors, with BitPay, discussed things with Bruno since 04.July.2012.

Now finally, I am happy to announce that BeVolunteer, the NGO behind BeWelcome, accepts Bitcoin as donations!

Some of you might know Couchsurfing? The biggest hospitality community, bringing together people from all over the world. They turned for-profit some time ago. Here comes BeWelcome, a registered non-profit NGO, community-driven, democratic, fair. And a pleasant bunch of people to hang out with. Which are over 50.000 members, by the way.

http://www.bewelcome.org/donate

The Bitcoin donation option has very low visibility indeed. I already asked to add a logo, and linked to http://bitcoin.org/en/press. Can someone confirm these logos all are under public licence?

It surely took a long time. This is a happy day for me.

Ente

edit:
here comes a curious donation method. It was decided (via voting) to immediately convert the donations to fiat. Donating itself happens via https://bitpay.com/m/528203/checkout, which is linked in the donation page. I'll suggest a regular, static Bitcoin address plus QR there.

Thanks Ente!

I've been a member of the board of directors of BeWelcome for a couple of months now, I proposed to allow BTC donations a month ago and I changed the text on the donation page this week (after I set up Bitpay). I'll make sure we'll add Bitcoin logo as well.

I'm taking it one step at a time, there was some animosity towards BTC at first.  The animosity has slightly decreased after I pointed out that Paypal has at times taken up to 28% of a donation, well, a 1 euro donation, but still.
I hope we'll have a proper BeWelcome Bitcoin wallet before 2016.

Welcome, Guaka!
(If that's still applicable, as you registered long time ago already)

It's always great to have direct contact with representatives of NGOs here.
Thank you for putting all the effort in this, and finally pushing this to fruitation.

Yes, it may seem to be a no-brainer to create a BitPay account and link it on a webpage. Here, it took several Board of Directors meetings and a 145 posts forum discussion spanning over a year and a half. Whew!

Was curious as to why, but figured it out--in case some other wants to donate on the same day, Bitcoin 100's $1,000 endowment via BTC would prevent them from doing such. Thanks for the heads-up, Ente.
