Then what will happen to coin in the wallet?
Which wallet? Gemini's custodial wallet? They'll probably just keep it unless you somehow provide them evidence that you aren't linked to that illegal activity, which obviously is sufficient if you just hand over your personal data. It's commonly known that whoever hands over their selfies, location, phone number etc., is not a criminal.  Roll Eyes

The coins are definitely not lost forever. They sit in Gemini. Gemini can either keep them, give them to the authorities, or send it back to you.

That is nice but when Gemini detect that the coins comes from illegal gambling platform and they (Gemini) close the account. Then what will happen to the coins in the wallet? Are they (the coins) going to lost forever or Gemini would return the coins back to the source?  My question is, what will happen to the coin that is in the wallet?
It's hard to say. I guess a deeper inspection of their TOS would be required to answer that question. If you agreed to a point in their TOS that gives them the right to confiscate those coins, that's what they could do. You will surely be asked to undergo KYC if you didn't already do that. No compliance = no refunds of your money probably.

They never said they would take the money away from you, but they also didn't say they wouldn't. Your account will be closed, but it's entirely possible you will be allowed to withdraw your crypto. A long time ago I exchanged some funds via Moneybookers (now called Skrill) with Liberty Reserve back and forth. Those were private deals between me and another guy. I guess they didn't like that. They asked me what I do and who the person I am sending/receiving money from/to is. When they weren't satisfied with the answers, I was informed that my account would be closed and that I should withdraw all my money asap. So even if I breeched their TOS, they didn't have the right or didn't want to exercise the right to confiscate my money.

By the way, how are those Wasabi download numbers doing? What about their advertising? They've been pretty quiet for a while.
Maybe they are trying to stay under the radar of regulators Wink
They are active on social media, I think they went to Bitcoin Amsterdam Conference, and they started some blog writing bounty, so they are active.
I see they also added support for new Ledger Nano S plus hardware wallet in their last release, so maybe they plan to one more partnership with them.

The coins are definitely not lost forever. They sit in Gemini. Gemini can either keep them, give them to the authorities, or send it back to you.
They are certainly lost for previous owner.
It's funny how governments can do ''magic tricks'' and turn so called ''tainted'' Bitcoin into clean, and sell them in auctions.
I am sure exchanges are doing something similar in cooperation  with them.

Are they (the coins) going to lost forever or Gemini would return the coins back to the source?  My question is, what will happen to the coin that is in the wallet?
It has been shown time and time again that after they seize your supposedly 'bad bad tainted' coins, most exchanges just throw them into their main wallet with all the other people's deposits and they are paid out to other customers who withdraw funds. Basically they just keep the coins, put them on the market and pass the 'bad bad taint' along to others.
Actually, they are even mixing all those coins together, in the process, since their systems don't do any type of sophisticated coin control.

Funnily, that leads to cases like Chainalysis reporting a high percentage of exchanges' hot wallet funds as 'tainted'.

By the way, how are those Wasabi download numbers doing? What about their advertising? They've been pretty quiet for a while.

Interesting! As for downloads, according to https://tooomm.github.io/github-release-stats/?username=zkSNACKs&repository=WalletWasabi, they got 33k downloads on their latest release, which is out for 2 months now. Comparing with historical numbers, for a timespan of 2 months that seems relatively normal for them. They had some releases with 50k or 60k downloads with a spacing of 2-3 months in the past (1.x.x), but also releases with much lower numbers.

Their download numbers are still relatively high even in comparison to the past. This goes to show how people still don't really understand what "privacy" means and how they should improve it.  This is exactly why government honeypot strategy is a successful one whenever it comes to privacy invading techniques.

It's funny how governments can do ''magic tricks'' and turn so called ''tainted'' Bitcoin into clean, and sell them in auctions.

They don't even try to, thats the problem with taint.

My previous post did not take taint into account (that is, exchanges using chain analysis to look for taint as opposed to gambling or mixing), so BlackHatCoiner's statement is correct:

They'd lose a lot of business if they did that with any random Joe
Except that they already do, and lose minimum business? They don't make it seem an extraordinary claim, but that's what Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini etc., all essentially do. If we take the crazy assumption that taint analysis isn't pointless and violative, then the term that you'll have your funds confiscated if the indefinite algorithm says so doesn't sound pointless and violative either.

Provided that a given exchange is looking for taint instead of plainly stating that they are only looking for evidence of mixing/gambling/adult/etc.

The thing is, looking for taint is like an intelligence agency arresting you for being a suspect person of interest. They didn't actually prove that you committed a crime or intended to, but they think you did (or perhaps they just say that as an excuse or pretext), and both of these types of activities should be outlawed.

Wasabi wallet is also looking for taint so that throws it in this category.

They say they're looking for gambling & adult and stuff but they do that by looking for taint instead of hard evidence.

Indeed. What I found even more shocking is how the other day someone asked me for a Wasabi download link, 'since they needed a desktop wallet'. So some people don't even consider Wasabi for their CoinJoin-mumbo-jumbo but simply as a wallet. It is beyond me why anyone would look further than Electrum or Sparrow; these 2 basically cover everything you need and don't have any of Wasabi's issues. You can even participate in Samourai CoinJoins using Sparrow.

Wasabi wallet is also looking for taint so that throws it in this category.

They say they're looking for gambling & adult and stuff but they do that by looking for taint instead of hard evidence.
Exactly; that's why they qualified for the [Blacklist] of unreliable, 'taint proclaiming' Bitcoin services / exchanges. Wink

Some weeks ago I decided to give WasabiWallet a try and test their compatibility with Trezor since I felt attracted to the design of this program, unfortunately I could not get history of transactions to appear and even synchronization time was very long, getting stuck sometimes.

The wallet itself said it was able to correctly connect to my HW, but it did not showed me anything, not even the current balance. Did I do something wrong during the configuration or the implementation is still being worked on?

Last time I tried connecting Trezor device with Wasabi wallet I couldn't do it and I was getting some error message.
I don't know if they fixed it now but I think that both sides are still working on making full support for coinjoin transactions, so there could be some bugs along the way.
Maybe try contacting wasabi support or write your issue on their github page, but if you don't want to use coinjoin better use Electrum wallet or Trezor Suite app with your hardware wallet.

Yes, I mostly wanted to give a try to Wasabi, since I am open to try new wallets with Trezor compatibility, I am aware both Electrum and Suite are solid wallets, specially since Trezor is implementing coin control and coinjoin soon.

I may give a try to Wasabi again when they announce a major update, still willing to see what they can offer.

Thanks for your reply.  Wink

You can do CoinJoin with the Samourai coordinator through Sparrow, which supports most hardware wallets, such as your Trezor.
Even if you give Wasabi the benefit of the doubt in any of the issues and discussions we've had about them this past year, Samourai should still be the safer choice. No blacklisting, no announcement of blacklisting, no working with blockchain analysis firms, not even a hint of any crap like that.

If you missed it, here's one (of 3?) thread with a few key questions and their answers:

Really love the Wasabi project.
Is there any chance to get a proper Android version of this wallet anytime soon?

And not trying to be OT too much, but I am wondering, how do you guys see the chances to make Bitcoin more fungible by having most wallets adopt a mixing function like Wasabi does? Right now I guess less than 1% of people storing their coins in wallets use Wasabi or Samurai or any type of annonymity-increasing measures. However if this becomes something more "main-stream" and more easily accessible, this would create an instant level-up for the true "Satoshi vision"  Wink. It would also make any kind of (hard-forky) core software alterations redundant.

Wasabi won't provide you with anonymity, no centralized service can guaranty that.  Not to mention that Wasabi has announced that they plan to actively spy on there clients to pick and chose which UTXOs qualify for their service.  You can read more about that here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5405325.0

Not to mention that Wasabi has announced that they plan to actively spy on there clients to pick and chose which UTXOs qualify for their service.
Which hasn't happened yet, though. You can still mix without doubt of being refused. Nonetheless, you should be distrusting Wasabi since that incident. Developers who've publicly stated multiple times to support and prioritize privacy, thought for more than a second to cooperate with chain analysis companies, and who did have conversation with them in which they decided to fund them with CoinJoin fees, should not be trusted sincerely.

I don't think Wasabi will release mobile version soon, and only similar mobile alternative is Samourai Wallet but they have their own issues.
You can connect Wasabi with hardware wallets and I think that Trezor will enable coinjoin transactions is near future, so maybe this would be a way to get around mobile support.
Mobile wallets are fine but I would only use them for pocket money and quick spending amounts of Bitcoin.

Really love the Wasabi project.

You might want to read their past news/announcement, https://blog.wasabiwallet.io/zksnacks-blacklisting-update/.

Is there any chance to get a proper Android version of this wallet anytime soon?

No, according to their FAQ. Although you may want to ask this question again in next 3-5 years assuming smartphone will be faster.

IS THERE AN ANDROID/IOS VERSION?

No, Wasabi and CoinJoin features require considerable computational power, not currently replicable on a smartphone.

And not trying to be OT too much, but I am wondering, how do you guys see the chances to make Bitcoin more fungible by having most wallets adopt a mixing function like Wasabi does?

I doubt closed source wallet which created by exchange (such as Coinbase Wallet or Trust Wallet) have any reason to add mixing feature. But only implementing mixing feature is mostly pointless when the wallet isn't designed with privacy in mind. For example, Electrum simply list of wallet addresses to Electrum server.

Thanks. I wasn't even aware, Wasabi was sponsored by a private entity. Their dependance on zkSNACKs is kinda worrying, I am suprised there are no other viable options to make that system run on a similar (or better) level than it does now - without depending on 3rd parties.

Kind of strange, since Wasabi doesn't need many resources on the desktop version at all...

Yes of course, but if there are more attractive options on the market (in comparison to the current big players like trust wallet etc.), some also offering automatic and easy-to-use coinjoin and the others don't - the choices will slowly bend towards the more-privacy-providing-wallets. It will become something common to use - more mainstream so-to-speak. If at some point it's just good practice to offer coinjoin, this could seriously influence the concerns Bitcoin has been facing for years now regarding its privacy. Maybe layer1 options would become obsolete.

btw: I assume if coinmixing would just be normal practice within most wallets, this would be called a layer2-privacy solution?

I seriously doubt law enforcement will let this happen without stepping in.  Coin Join will not be let become main stream because they are scared of it and can not crack it.  Before they took Wasabi in their boat, they seemed very desperate to find a way to crack Wasabi.  Seems like money was a solution in this case.

So they have to play a strategy and also have a backup.  Pay Wallet developers big bags to collaborate with them and cancel privacy of their customers while deceiving them.  Or the backup, just step in forcefully and sanction anyone who continues to introduce Coin Join as part of their Wallet.

Only if you have relative new/fast desktop though. My past review with 2 core CPU/2GB RAM show Wasabi use decent amount of resource. I expect cheap or old Android smartphone could experience similar performance problem.

Performance

I don't experience slowdown/lag when i only open Wasabi Wallet. Wasabi only use about 200MB-250MB RAM, but CPU usage always between 60-90%. But when i also open Firefox with 2-3 tabs, both Firefox and Wasabi feel laggy.

btw: I assume if coinmixing would just be normal practice within most wallets, this would be called a layer2-privacy solution?

No, while there's coordinator server to manage all CoinJoin participant, it doesn't create any off-chain transaction and only create single on-chain transaction.

Have you tried Sparrow Wallet? Much better wallet than Wasabi in every aspect, and it does have built-in access to Samourai Whirlpool.
The limitation of these mixing (CoinJoin) implementations is that they rely on a centralized server. There is JoinMarket, which instead is completely decentralized.

It will become something common to use - more mainstream so-to-speak. If at some point it's just good practice to offer coinjoin, this could seriously influence the concerns Bitcoin has been facing for years now regarding its privacy. Maybe layer1 options would become obsolete.
In my opinion, CoinJoin won't evolve past the 'band-aid' stage. It was never planned or designed to become the 'ultimate' Bitcoin privacy solution; it all started here, by the way.
Personally, I'd like Bitcoin L1 Privacy to be a future main objective for Bitcoin. Similar to Monero or or Grin, where every transaction is automatically private, without relying on specific wallets, centralized servers or manual actions.
