Statistics July 2026____________________One month after the official launch of the new version of TalkImg, I want to thank everyone for the support shown to this project. I want to continue developing the same for you, and you gave me the motivation to do so.
I received several pieces of feedback and new suggestions, which were well received. Some of them are already being analyzed in more detail, with the expectation of being adopted soon. Therefore, you can continue to make suggestions, and I will try to see what might be feasible for me to implement.
Right now I'm trying to focus on reorganizing the backup structure to make the process more viable and reliable for everyone. It's also important to organize other aspects of the project internally, but in the end, it helps everyone.
Now, let's talk about one of the features that has been requested for some time: the ability to send images via link. I will briefly explain why this feature is not active, nor do I have any plans to activate it.
When a user uploads an image via their browser, TalkImg is not exposed to third parties. However, when an image is sent via a link, the TalkImg server connects to that website's server to download it. So, technically speaking, it was TalkImg that downloaded the image, not a regular web user. This would expose TalkImg to not only being blocked by other websites/services but also being accused of directly violating copyright. Today, if an image is flagged as violating copyright, I can easily remove it by indicating that it wasn't uploaded by us. Since it was sent via a link, this argument is no longer valid.
Another, more serious problem that could arise was a "Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF)". Basically, a malicious user could try to access internal server information, launching an attack (I've already suffered a DDoS attack, I prefer not to repeat the experience). Even with measures against SSRF, the attacker could attempt to launch attacks using links that are either too slow to respond or cause other types of server overload, potentially leading to platform instability.
In this sense, it is preferable for the user to upload the image directly, rather than TalkImg retrieving it. Therefore, the site accepts the "copy/paste" function. In other words, the user can copy an image from a website (without needing to save it to their PC) and then "paste" it into TalkImg. We know that this may not be as practical on some devices, such as smartphones, but we are already planning an improvement to this feature.
I hope this has helped clarify why the upload-via-link functionality is not active. I am grateful to everyone who shared this idea. Feel free to continue sharing other ideas.
