I have a friend and coincidentally my friend likes online gambling games such as playing slot machines. I totally agree with you. Gambling while working shows unprofessionalism and a poor work etiquette. Because this will not just affect and reflect you as a person, but as well the company you are working with. Also, gambling while working will just divert your attention. So, it's either your work or your gambling activity will be compromised in the process.
One of the things that we can do avoid doing such things is to set or plan a day where you can engage in gambling activities. Normally, weekdays are set for work, and then you can the whole weekend to do all your recreational activities like gambling. Always remember that we should know how to prioritize things. It is as simple as this, if you think that your top priority on that day is gambling, then might as well not go on your work at all. I’m curious. Knowing fully well about your not so good financial situation, you went ahead to bet knowing you would suffer a lot if you ultimately lost the bet. But you did so anyway and still lost the bet. That was quite foolish on your part.

I don't do that but if a co-worker knows that you do and that person is jealous on what you do, you'll probably receive an IR from your HR. Especially in the work culture in my country, if you're not the superior position then you'll have to be asked for so many times with favor that will be commanded to you and that's how you get along with them. But if you're in a higher position then that's nothing for the subordinates that you have. There's a term on that type of person that uses your work time in doing something else regardless of what it is, and that's likely near to be called as a jerk.
