...you still might need to split up your pushups into more than one set per day, especially once you start to get into higher quantities and you might not be able to do 30, 40 or 50 pushups in one set...
I can definitely do more than that, before my exercise hiatus I used to do pushups daily, with daily +1, and I reached 130+ pushups in one go. I feel it's proven way from my own experience and I am looking to continue that way.
Many guys have trouble doing more than 40 or 50 in one go, and so even athletic guys shoot for 100 in one go and frequently those guys get stuck in the 70-80 territories.. so surely you would have a higher level of fitness than most people (even athletic folks) if you are able to do 130 pushups in one go..

Guys I am not sure what physically elite people you are hanging out with, but the numbers you are throwing around are insane!
JJG you already said it and this is an understatement in my opinion. Someone who is able to pump out 130 clean push-ups in one go is pretty much the highest level someone is able to reach unless an individual specifically practices for this particular exercise. I bet that if you randomly pick 500 individuals from any gym data basis (i.e., user IDs, so you can't know what they look like), a maximum of 2 people would be able to do that. It's probably rather <2, i.e. 0 or 1.
The point is that it becomes exponentially harder to pump out the next 10 clean ones. Going from 10 to 20, from 20 to 30, etc. is all doable for pretty much everyone unless they are obese or have some other kind of physical limitation. Going from 50 to 60 is still very doable and cracking the 100 is possible with a lot of training, strong physical condition and good nervous system adaptation capabilities. The last one makes a huge difference because those are sometimes the outstanding talents that seem to be machines compared to the average human being. But I can tell you also from my own experience (not me personally, but talks with a friend who has been part of one) that in special forces units, you do see people who can handle 100 quite well, but above that it becomes tremendously more difficult especially if the condition is to not cheat and keep those push-ups clean.
For reference:
With an 80 - 100 range you reach competitive standard levels in the Navy SEAL test and this is about right I would say.
I know that there are some freaks and some world records out there, which go far beyond the 130, very far beyond. I have watched some of those videos. It had nothing to do with a normal push-up as the form was so bad that I would have never counted it as a world record and these guys have been practicing the same movement for years and years and years.
On another note, I had the pleasure to catch a virus again, which is very uncommon for me. But I have kids around me and while I often times can get around it when they catch it, I am at least the last to catch it when I catch it. And this time I caught it twice within I think 2.5 months or so. Unbelievable.
Now I will post my embarrassing update regardless to stay in the loop. Since this virus went straight to the lungs, my initial goal of ramping up numbers significantly will have to be postponed by a little bit.
