Monero got to be the most boring coin of all. I don't know, there's just nothing exciting about it going on.
What do you guys find exciting about it, hands down?

Thanks for sharing! I am actually quite positively surprised by these statistics. You would expect that there are way more newbie and junior members (trying to earn a quick buck) compared to hero and legendary. But this Monero tread is like an upside down piramide.

What could explain such a remarkable difference? Likely at first people join the forum for bitcoin, and then slowly realize that there is value in alternative technology as well? Or is it Monero specific because of it's complexity / really being different from bitcoin?

I am not browsing any other threads in this section of the forum, so excuse my ignorance if the answer is obvious.

I've run it on a few more threads, and even for younger coins you will see the majority of posts by at least senior and hero members. I haven't run it enough to really evaluate, but I get the sense the people posting on a thread for months/years will become senior/hero/legendary, and so that's where the majority of the posts will come from. Monero does seem to have bit higher percentage of legendary and hero than the other threads I ran, but again, small sample...

I guess it would be a fairer comparison to compare with other coins' threads that are ~2 years old with 1000+ pages.

Could you also make an overview with unique posters and ranks? That is, how many unique legendary members have posted in the thread, how many unique hero members have posted in the thread etc.

For the XMR ANN thread:
Code:
User class                     number of unique posters
Full Member                      382
Hero Member                      338
Jr. Member                       217
Legendary                        105
Member                           322
Newbie                           361
Sr. Member                       353
Staff                              2
aka instacash                      1

Something borked on instacalm aka instacash, but would rather not run whole script again (this was just done from the output file). Staff posts are Lauda and EAL.

Random analysis / observation of the top coinmarketcap coins that I could find info on.

Note - the  data with the "nodes all/active" format are all pulled from
https://bitinfocharts.com/

Number of nodes:

Bitcoin: 6517 NODES
https://bitnodes.21.co/
Nodes all/active   41871 / 6795

Ethereum: 5956
https://www.ethernodes.org/network/1

Litecoin: Nodes all/active   5609 / 846

Ripple - unknown

Dash: 3772 (masternodes)
http://178.254.23.111/~pub/masternode_count.png
Nodes all/active   5885 / 4110

DigixDAO - WTF is this? Is this just on the ethereum chain?

Doge: Nodes all/active   2979 / 609
https://bitinfocharts.com/dogecoin/

MaidSafeCoin, unknown

NEM: 141 (full nodes)
http://nemnodes.org/

Peercoin
Nodes all/active   942 / 250

Bitshares: unknown

Monero: 169 live count
https://monerohash.com/nodes-distribution.html
153 "high availability" nodes
318 "full nodes seen last week"
http://moneronodes.i2p.xyz/

I guess its still just early yet.... it could also be interesting to do an analysis on market cap / node count. Ultimately, i just find it crazy to think that there are, at a minimum, 169 people that have monero nodes running, and at a maximum, 318.

Suffice it to say, if you are following Monero, are interested in Monero, hold any Monero, do what you can to get a node running, somehow.

Yes it is allegedly gold-backed tokens on ethereum. Because backed tokens that ended up all being scams on their own blockchains become legit when you sprinkle magic ETH dust on them.

Transitive property. If A = B and B = C, then A = C.

If blockchains are decentralized databases

And Monero has the most advanced database

Then monero is the most advanced blockchain.

I think everyone a bit worn out from the constant dumpage. Where the fuck do all those coins come from! It's tough to keep up the spirits when you see the market getting so manipulated and your holding for altruistic reasons.

A legitimate altcoin with truly disruptive tech like Monero is a threat to all the shitcoins with bad crypto and snake oil marketing.

Thus, we are all of their common enemy.  Plus, we goad them into attacking, to better our distribution and antifragility.   Grin

Introducing

moneroworld.com

and specifically,

node.moneroworld.com

What is it?

Moneroworld.com is a top level domain that I put on afraid.org, a free DNS and dynamic DNS blah blah blah, you can read about it.

Basically, you can now setup your own blog.moneroworld.com, or whatever, and host it from home (or wherever).

What is node.moneroworld.com ?

If you start simplewallet with --daemon-host node.moneroworld.com , it will connect to a random node thats part of the Moneroworld Network.

Do you want to share your node to the moneroworld network? email me at gingeropolous@tutanota.com, or PM me.

Nice service.

Ignoring some privacy issues, using a random node (possibly broken or malicious) to send coins is basically 100% safe. The worst case is mostly that your transaction gets eaten (lost), after which you can rescan your wallet, recover your coins and try again (with a different node).

Where more caution is needed is using a random node to receive coins, since you could be spoofed (node gives you fake blockchain information, indicating you received coins when you really didn't). For example, if you are buying Monero OTC and send the Bitcoins after "receiving" Monero, only to find later that you didn't really receive the Monero, you could get scammed.

The risk is relatively small especially since you are connecting to a random node. The attacker would have be running a lot of nodes and hope you connect to one of those while at the same time arranging a trade with you. You can further mitigate the risk by double checking any txids you think you have received via a random node against an independent chain explorer to make sure they actually exist and were mined.

Of course to get the full benefits of privacy and security you should run your own node, but with some caution, a random remote node can be used relatively safely.

Thanks smooth!

Indeed, regarding the bolded, luckily this node network is centralized in the sense that I am responsible for adding records to the DNS entry and handing out keys for the dynamic update magic . So hopefully only trusted members of the monero community will message me and I'm not adding nodes that are run by malicious types.
