So, finally after nearly a week, Pepe's monero blockchain is fully synced.
Pepe had to restart once (delete everything and start from scratch) to make it work.

Pepe didn't use the import_blockchain feature, why... should he have?

Not necessarily. Sometimes it is slower than syncing. It really depends on what causes the bottleneck. I can sync in 1-2 hours on a computer that is a few years old. YMMV.

I guess what slows Pepe's process down the most is running it on a computer with mechanical harddrive, while a full bitcoin node is syncing on the same 1 TB harddisk, 24/7.
(4x 3 GHz, 8 GByte RAM, Win 7 64bit.)
Both bitcoin and monero are now fully synced.

Don't know the exact amount of time but it was between 12-24 hrs syncing from scratch windows 10, i5, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD.

Yeah, if it was competing with bitcoin for disk bandwidth that would have slowed it down quite a lot.

With those h/w specs it would have sync'd much faster on Linux.

Hello, dear XMR community,
XDN-project developers are happy to announce FCN-XMR and future XDN-XMR merged mining.
Now you can mine 2 crypto currencies simultaneously. It is very energy efficient and helps to secure both networks.
Now we are observing FCN+XMR merged mining. New FantomCoin version is working very good, FantomCoin hashrate is rising, now it is about 600kh/s - the second largest CryptoNight network after Monero.
You are more than welcome to try to mine both FCN and XMR.

Fantomcoin source code: https://github.com/xdn-project/fantomcoin
Fantomcoin binaries: https://github.com/xdn-project/fantomcoin/releases/tag/2.0.0.1-beta
Currently there is 1 pool with FCN+XMR merged mining support: https://minergate.com/

Thank you.

Pepe thanks you for your Input.
BTW most of the time Pepe's machine serves as a windows-based "NAS" here at home, providing him and his girl (pepita) with everything they need to watch movies, series or listen to music.
That's why they are ok with letting it run 24/7 and run a few full nodes on it. It serves multiple purposes.
The NAS has 4 hds in it. Pepe will probably spread the blockchains on separate hds to improve performance.

"The public beta is [already] soon to be released but a lot of features such as daemon integration (start/stop), better remote node support, ux improvements, porting to smartphones, third party plugin system etc. are not finished yet."

So in short: Yes and No.

Well, I'm not trying to speculate, just curious. ZCash seems like such a scam, which probably drained a lot of people who bought it early, and perhaps people who invested on this coin.

"The public beta is [already] soon to be released but a lot of features such as daemon integration (start/stop), better remote node support, ux improvements, porting to smartphones, third party plugin system etc. are not finished yet."

So in short: Yes and No.

Monero is no ordinary crypto-currency. It is on its own and has gone where no other crypto has gone; the Star Trek Voyager amongst all cryptos.

To quote Jaquee fully on the point made:

"I love the fundamentals of Monero and want to get more involved in the community. I believe an official GUI will help Monero go mainstream. Ilya has done a terrific job so far, but his time is limited and I’m happy to help out. The public beta is soon to be released but a lot of features such as daemon integration (start/stop), better remote node support, ux improvements, porting to smartphones, third party plugin system etc. are not finished yet." These are areas where Jaquee, a highly regarded and experienced coder, will be concentrating upon. In the last month, Jaquee's voluntary contributions have been prolific. Now he is being funded to help complete the job.

Jaquee seems to be providing the missing link in taking Monero into the stratosphere. Other Monero GUI developers have apparently become enthused and have been spurred on by Jaquee's involvement. Yesterday, it was announced that 'in the last 24 hours' there had been a flurry of commits to the GUI from multiple parties.

So, the answer to the original poster's question is a resounding YES, a fully featured GUI 'for normal people' is on its way, sooner rather than later.  In the meantime a new, simpler, robust GUI wallet is about to be released.  Wink
