I just saw this and thought it wasn't very bright of the hackers to ask for BTC when they could have had Monero...

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-38127096

The targeted victims don't really know even what Bitcoin is.
Monero popularity still has to grow a lot until it can reach the point ransomware will ask XMR instead of BTC.

The targeted victims don't know what Monero is either.

Those hackers will smarten up over time. Just a matter of when.

So now that xmr is a serious coin would you guys recommend holding it in my portfolio for later in life or did it just have its minute of fame and its going to die like ltc did.

Just wondering.

As someone who has been long on XMR for quite some time, I would say, yes, it's absolutely a good investment for "later". However. Anything can change, this is a new realm. Point was, I am still buying. Tongue

Edit - have been using the compiled linux gui a bit, found a bug once, but it's shaping up to be a good release in the end, everything worked for me except  a few minor bugs. Feeling pretty confident about things overall. Cheesy

Cheers! Smiley

Edit 2 - This is NOT investment advice, merely opinion! Cheesy

Thanks for the advice man. But its hard to take your word for it because your already long on it and in profit I assume.

I'll wait to get more advice and see where I can go from there.

If you don't mind holding for 6 months  then buy if you expect  quick returns then your just gambling. I have been grabbing some in the dips as I was divested when the spike hit but I know it will never drop back to those prices so am just trying to get some in the dips as I said. I know it will still be a long road to adoption but this is not a fly by night project, it has legs and will be around for years to come unless the crypto gets broken which is not in the immediate future. BTW anyone that has followed my advice is in profit.

Yeah I've been watching and decided to buy in today and I'll keep buying a few coins every day over th3e next few months. I'll check back then and let you guys know what my average is.

Nice, we all need more people on the coin. Anyhow, don't throw me under the bus for my predictions in a few months should it downtrend.  - in fact, I'm not much in profit TBH. If you see my history you can probably see I missed out as well.. BUT... I'm STILL long though. Good replies to my post, much appreciated everyone! Cheesy

How do I get the blockchain.raw file imported?

Done scanning bootstrap file
Full header length: 1028 bytes
Scanned for blocks: 37530899 bytes
Total:              37531927 bytes
Number of blocks: 33336

2016-Nov-29 17:58:16.183728 bootstrap file last block number: 33335 (zero-based height)  total blocks: 33336

If you really want to import using the blockchain.raw:
that file seems to be truncated: only ~37MB and 33k blocks.

But syncing from the network process is much more optimized than those import export tools.

I will make two points:

1. This question is probably better off in the Monero speculation thread.

2.  You should not buy any altcoin solely as an investment. Do you understand how Monero works and what value using it can provide? If you cannot answer those basic questions, then don't buy Monero.

Plenty of people have done exactly that and made a lot of profit. Like it or not, speculation is an important factor in any altcoin's evolution. But yes, this kind of chat belongs in the other thread.

And plenty of people have bought navcoin to get on the anonymity bandwagon and made some profit. Does that mean they should have done it?

Hello,
i want to create a monero brain wallet. But i don't know if it's possible.

I found a web site with some explanations but i don't understand :

http://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/1864/how-to-properly-generate-a-monero-brain-wallet

Do you think it's possible to create a wallet with a sentence of 25 words that i chose?. With bitcoin, it's possible with such web site => https://www.bitaddress.org/ (choice : brain wallet).

On a decent machine with an SSD and a decent internet, no - the whole sync takes ~ 2-6 hours. I'd suggest you post your logs in Monero Support: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=652305

I like this so I just bought some monero. Be advised every time I buy a coin it goes down!

So why are you buying on the latest upswing? You should have bought a week ago? Tongue

I should have responded here and not the speculation thread so I'll drop this here and add to it.

A USD/XMR pair is great but how can we trust this exchange that got hacked because of retardedly stupid security setup.

So what have they done to improve on their security? How can we trust them when they lied about the hot/cold ratio in the first place? Are they still using that rubber stamp company for the third key that can be used to bypass legitimate users keys?

You don't have to keep coins on Finex.  The advantage to Monero is that now people may buy XMR directly with fiat (and then withdraw them ASAP).

Yeah so there is no way I'm reading that whole thread. they lost 119,756 BTC which was far greater than what should have been in their hot wallet, they lied about their fund dispersal.

So my question once again is why should we trust them now???

FYI stated not to leave funds on an exchange is nothing but a red herring. Why you think you would have to tell me that is laughable.
