How many people have updated the firmware?  When I did mine, it would max out around 100G total.  I ended up reset the miner and starting over from scratch.  What has been you experience with the firmware?

I did all of mine.  Hasn't done any harm but the upside has been minimal.

It's funny, for all of mining's 'brute force' characteristics it really is a game of inches.

You needed to set the frequency in the miner configuration>advanced tab. hit save and apply, bingo!

I'm sorry that I'm a little bit late to the party - but can someone explain the benefit of updating the firmware?  I saw it mentioned several times but not sure what the improvement is with it.  I just got 4 new S3's in the mail today, so going through the motions of setting them up - but if someone could explain what is going on - I would really appreciate it!!!

Is there a safe shutdown command, like a "Halt" for these? Either for web Gui or ssh?

ssh in and use the unix shutdown/reboot command it shuts down all the services.

as for unplugging the network cable and waiting why not just shut down cgminer???

/etc/init.d/cgminer stop
and
/etc/init.d/cgminer start

when u change frequency there is no need to reboot it either just stop cgminer and and start it again.

They added a clock speed tab on the configuration page so you can change it without having to ssh into it or type funny commands in a dos window.
As noted, if you upgrade to it on the first restart you MUST go to the clock tab and assign a frequency or the unit will not hash properly.

Whelp. Three weeks later and my 1/2 hour restart cronjob has kept all of my B3/B5 units above 480 on the 24-hour average.
It was an odd fix, but I am pleased.

Just clamped down on a few S3+s, I'm very confident they will be within pennies of the cheapest $/GH come Sept. 20th.

BTW, for anyone that wanted to know, I eventually was able to clock that AMV2 to 1.328TH at 340MHz.
Definitely WAS the best deal at one point but not anymore. Very good miner though...

So we just had almost a 20% rise in difficulty.  Still early on this one but how many here think preordering an s3 for Sept 20 Ship date ( not delivered ) is going to still be a good buy?  I am not going to argue if the s3 is the best option, asking who here thinks it will likely break even?


Sure anything can happen but would you say you will see a profit at .58 per s3 if.

Just had a 20% dif increase
If this next one ends up being ~ 20%
The next ends up being 20%
and the one just after receiving the s3 unit ends up being 20%

Still thinking .58 btc is a good price?

You can tell by the way I have worded it I don't think there is a prayer, but welcome anyone that wants to pose thoughts on the scenario above.

Personally with Winter coming the s3 byproduct is useful to me for the next 5 months, I have decent electric costs, I don't even mind breaking about even as I believe one day something major will break and I am content accumulating btc as a hobby instead of buying it direct with usd. 

Just curious on what others think.

I just got my batch 7 antminers, and wondering how exactly do I know which firmware I am on?

In the overview tab it shows this:

Should I flash it with this firmware? antMiner_S320140811.bin   add frequency advanced setting.

I really think it has a lot to do with your reinvestment strategy and personal situation.
I'm calculating based on the exponential rising average of 20%. I think this is a pretty solid model through Dec. 2014.

I don't think that now is the best time to be purchasing hardware, but I think the chance of the future being any brighter is nigh impossible.
Adding two B8 S3+ units to my farm doesn't pose much of a threat to my income at current difficulties and carries the possibility of adding an extra .8BTC to my wallet after ROI by Christmas.

I'm counting on a few things:

1) BMT ships on time.
2) 20% rises.
3) Existing power supply.

If the price of BTC skyrockets above $650 before BMT ships, then I probably would have been better trading to fiat and purchasing BTCGarden equipment that ships now.
That was the case a few weeks ago when BTCGarden was still selling at .85/GH and prices were up.

I've heard about Spondoolies daily production rate, Black Arrow getting back in the game, FC shipping tubes and new 22nm chips that are going to crush us.
I still think none of this will come to fruition for another few months.

Meh... I upgraded and did see some gain as well, but I'm looking forward to improved performance on the S3+ or v2 of the S3.  At least that infernal beeping is gone! I was slightly disappointed that the S2 wasn't upgraded to something more robust. My guess is that they canceled those because of all the problems people had with them. Shame, would have been nice to get something 3 or 4 th/s out of that unit with some kind of a newer model. Bitmain seems to be taking a step back here going again for lower speed in a smaller form factor.

Has there been anything official about canceling the S2 upgrade kit? The only reason I believe the S1 'Upgrade' kit hit the market so fast is largely due to the fact that it's pretty much the same as an S3. There's a little daughter board that will adapt to the S1s TPlink controller, but other than that its just two S3 blades.

An S2 upgrade would require a different PCB with backplane connector, etc. I'm sure they're been focused on fixing the DC issue with the S3 before they move onto selling what's supposed to be near enterprise-grade hardware.

Thanks for the reply, and yes if btc climbs back to 600+ it certainly would help.  Also yes, it is based quite heavily on ones personal situation of power costs/heat etc. 

Someone that pays .03/kwh has a much different look on things then someone paying 21/kwh.  Me, I pay .07, not bad.

Bitmain now announce the S3+, which is a revised version of S3 running stably at 453GH/s (frequency=225 MHz), while consumes 355 Watt power at the wall.

Yeeeeah. I really hope whoever controls that hashcannon decides to be nice the community over the next few weeks.
Either that, or a manufacturer doing large-scale testing before shipment. Last 25% jump was admittedly BMT testing S3 hashboards.



In fact, maybe this last dip will be our last on our way to a difficulty DECREASE.

I don't think s3 testing would increase the hash rate difficulty  that high , but who knows.
