I'm sorry that I'm a little bit late to the party - but can someone explain the benefit of updating the firmware?  I saw it mentioned several times but not sure what the improvement is with it.  I just got 4 new S3's in the mail today, so going through the motions of setting them up - but if someone could explain what is going on - I would really appreciate it!!!

Thanks,

Brian

PS Take pitty on me - I've been working day and night shifts, and I'm exhausted Smiley

Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

I just got my batch 7 antminers, and wondering how exactly do I know which firmware I am on?

In the overview tab it shows this:
Firmware Version   OpenWrt Barrier Breaker r38031 / LuCI Trunk (svn-r9909)
Kernel Version   3.10.12

Should I flash it with this firmware? antMiner_S320140811.bin   add frequency advanced setting.

If it's B7, it should already have the latest FW (0811), no?

The first line of Status/Kernel Log should show the date of the firmware, if I remember correctly.

I think the only difference between these FWs is how the frequencies are accessed and applied.

As long as your smart enough to set it back to default you should no problems or difference if your not on the first firmware.  If your still on day one firmware it won't hurt. Since I did the update I'm planning to see if I can get my miner under clocked a bit to quiet it down a bit more. I'm hoping to have 2 s3+'s in September to pick up the slack.

There is supposed to be a cgminer firmware update in 2 weeks and I haven't been in the right place to know if it tweaks anything else.

**I note setting default since v3 firmware does not do default speed on loading for whatever and you will get garbage speeds presumably if you weren't intentionally trying to overclock with 2 pci express plugs. Default is normal 440G.

Like the info address for potential tips Wink

Thanks for the reply, and yes if btc climbs back to 600+ it certainly would help.  Also yes, it is based quite heavily on ones personal situation of power costs/heat etc. Someone that pays .03/kwh has a much different look on things then someone paying 21/kwh.  Me, I pay .07, not bad.

I've just been thinking, do you guys really calculate all costs concerning energy in or do you mean only the energy price alone with something like $0.07/kWh?

Here where I live the best price on energy I can get is €0.0435/kWh ~ $0.0577/kWh excl. VAT, but when calculating all additional costs for a whole year in (and we have a plethora of charges and taxes) it becomes €0.1147/kWh ~ $0.1520/kWh.

Something to consider when doing mining calculations.

What is the default port I have to forward to access the antminer from a location other than the local network?
If I wanted to change the port how do i do it? vim /etc/config/cgminer??? The port is not in that config, do I have to add the line 'api_port' xxxx
Do i need to put in api-allow into the /etc/config/cgminer?
Is there any other options I need to put in the config to access the miner from a remote location? I want to use the Awesome Miner http://www.awesomeminer.com/ to monitor the fleet but I cant seem to access the miners with a vpn or by port forwarding.

Thanks for the help

EDIT: Used Hamachi to avoid port forwarding. Default port is 4028

In my case I am running my calculations based on US regulated Class-A 500A delivery.
Most of those prices you are reading about are indeed after fuel-surcharges, etc.

hi everyone

I have received my Antminer S3 and able to power it up. But my IP address is different which is 10.0.0.X. Therefore I can't go to 192.168.1.99 to setup my miner. Can someone teach me how to set the IP address?

Thanks

You have to get into your network / router settings and change the settings in your network to accept the device. Or you can setup the device on another network (with the 192.168.1.99) and then take your machine to your place with all settings done at the other place

I allways use my 2nd PC and change the LAN address in that to fit the one from the miner.
Then I change the IP of the miner to my regular IP-ranche und restart the miner.
Then back on my all day use PC I pop up the miners web page and do the settings.

Don't vorget to set the IP from the 2nd PC back to DHCP!

I've confirmed with BITMAINTECh that its not possible to identify that an Antminer S3 is different from other from physical review, i've ordered 2 from amazon from some guy who's not BITMAINTECH, i'll be posting about my experience, perhaps i could check which firmware the antminer have and verify that i have Batch 7 (since thats the one "pre-ordered"), any ideas are welcome boys.

if you have a laptop you can take the laptop offline and set it to 192.168.1.1    then use it to set the s-3

you need a laptop with a ethernet connection.  here is a you tube on setting up an s-1 which should help

But they say in their website to use all four connectors if overclock.

I know they do, I have many overclocked to 250 Hz with just 2 connectors.  Search the forum and you will see others have shown that all 4 connections are not necessary.  If your unnecessarily worried about it, you can purchase some molex to pci-e connections.

I have NO idea why people are buying batch 8, even with an overclock the units wont even return 50%.

what exactly are you trying to do???

I bought 2 antminer S3 that are supposed to be Batch 7 from Amazon from seller: Bitmainantminer <- thats his name on amazon.
They will arrive soon, and i need to verify and certify my self that those units are:

100% working parts & real parts
Never used
Batch 7

So, my only idea since there's no way to verify that the batch is actually BS7, is to set frequencies and see what # GH/S i get.

Ok, so I had three of my four B5's on 250 and they ran great but I felt like I might have been pushing my luck some so I put them on 243.75 and man, I must say, from philipma's expectations of what he said I should get. I'm doing pretty damn good.

The first image is the one machine that's never gone past 237.5.

I'll take this as reference for now.

Why didnt you just buy from bitmain instead of a marked up (and probably used) unit from amazon?
