Recently added a batch 15. all the miners run between 58-63c. except for 1 blade of 1 miner runs in the 68-71c range. not sure why. havent taken it apart to check yet. All miners are overclocked, 4 @ 731, 2 @ 650

the ambient on the hot side is about 80F. been thinking about stacking the miners vertically and building a box with an extrator fan to suck out the heat and pump it into my air return. But with the 1/2 only a few months away and "maybe" new machines idk if its worth building yet. as the 1/2 may force out the smaller home miner like myself.

Wizard box Update 1

Hey guys, had these puppies running at 100% for a week now, I couldn't be happier! Still more work to be done to add in the 8in outside intake and hopefully add a second centrifugal fan as a failsafe and so I can bring the outside noise down.

Finished (Phase 1) 5in outside air intake + 5in inside air intake = 8in intake, 8in exhaust with ~1200cfm centrifugal fan I managed to snag used for $75 




Replaced useless laundry room window with 2x8in manifold




The door needs to be finished, same with the lid. Sound is low enough once I build the laundry room door you really won't hear it through the rest of the house.

MINING FACT: In Alberta (Pretty sure it's actually a North American standard) you *CANNOT* wire up a standard 5-15 outlet with 240v and have it pass an inspection. We wired these up with simplex 240v outlets and built these adapters which are entirely acceptable to code.

Always make sure your 240v breakers are properly ganged!


Going to be a few weeks 'til I put any more into the rig, waiting to see what the prices on these single fan s7's do because they would be a perfect fit in this box.

All components are buyed as used; 1x290 + 1x380 + 1x280 + 1x7950 + 1x7870 = 95 mhs/s and draining 910w  

In some days i'll have an open case and this rig will seem better than now...

This is a really unprofessional and expensive setup.
Its obvious that cards can't cool adequately, not enough space between them and why are they so high above the MB?
And why use 2 PSUs, when u can use 1 only if you had the soldering skills, one PSU is much more efficient, we are talking 100-200 wats.
Its not a bad rig, but it hasn't been though thru enough, and quite a lazy setup.


P.S. Its also obvious, that if someone tries to pick it up from the sides, and squeezes, they might break off, cause they are attached only at the bottom...

Agreed: The whole point of this thread is to show off cool solutions for mining things. You don't post comments on unhealthy BMI levels on porn sites, don't post pointless "you could get 2% imrpovement by sanding the rails" posts here.

Just to post some comments & observations:

6 x GPU rig setup especially if using R9-390s does take on up to 300watts per card -so two units of 1300w PSU will do nicely with a comfortable buffer for OC.

1 x 1600w may do it too -- but probably safer on 5 x GPUs ; the AMD based cards are highly overclockable ....

2 x 1300w EVGA is cheaper than 1 x 1600w EVGA = so there is also cost considerations.

These 390s can run up 30MH/s easily with minor OC, and of course that will take even more wattage.

I understand these rigs are custom made for sale to clients - ShopemNL has a nice store front selling customs rigs (used and new) and mining accessories.

For online sales to customers, some level of quality of parts, PSUs, cost, etc will be major consideration for ROI vs ETH current market price.

This rig is also a very powerful mining machine for alt-coin mining, so there is life after ETH in the future...

Open rig case like these will need good powerful fans eventually to help get heat off the cards - this would probably be setup after rig completion when the rig goes into the data centre or home computer room / basement / attic.

The XFX cards have good quality active fans built-in so the gap in between cards is acceptable. The rule of thumb is gap of 1.5 inches, as per advised by rig owners that I have seeked advice from.

R390s are reputed to be best for high resolution gaming modes, versus the Nvidia equivalent GTX-970 which is another badass card for mining - so there
are active fans, VRAM up to 8GB etc to consider, etc... all these will require more wattage.

Overclocking a 390 is really unnecessary on Ethereum, in fact you should undervolt them, I power my 6x390 rigS with EVGA 1300W and even Thunderbolt 1200W.
So there is absolutely no need for a 2PSU setup + 390s are not as effective as 380s price/hashrate/power

If you r interested, look at my older posts, you can see my rigs evolving for 5 years from rigs in fruit crates, to rows up on rows of rigs.

A fury is much better at 4K plus.  It is also more efficient. 

There is a altcoins mining thread.  Keep that in mind.

king_pin has contributed a lot to this thread.  You should look and read through the tread if you don't recognize him (assuming he could be wrong).  I interpret his post as a warning to new miners, based on his experience.  I can tell you from my own that mining in the summer, or running many rigs in the same room drastically changes how your rig will run.

For pure cost effectiveness a 380 is the best new card to buy.  Adding a single configuration setting will allow it to mine ETH at 20mh with stock freqs and the card costs ~$200. At stock freqs a single 380 should use ~170 watts.  This is much more efficient than OC'ed 390's.
