How would would estimate the amount of energy used by the burst network vs Bitcoin?

I guess the biggest question is, what percentage of the time do hard drives need to be online to be used to mine?

I guess the biggest question is, what percentage of the time do hard drives need to be online to be used to mine?

There are a lot of assumptions in these numbers, but it should still give a rough estimate.

Bitcoin network electrical consumption:

Assumption: The average Bitcoin miner has the efficiency of an Antminer S4 of 0.69 Watts/(GH/s).

In reality, this assumption is very generous because the efficiency for most ASICs will be worse than one of the most power efficient available.
Total Bitcoin hashrate as of 11/20/14 at 11:20pm: 284,772,770 GH/s

Total electricity consumption (at a minimum): 0.69 W/(GH/s) * (284,772,770 GH/s) = 196,493,211.3 Watts = 196,493 kilowatts

BURST network electrical consumption:

Assumption: The average hard drive on the BURST network is 1 TB.

According to http://www.buildcomputers.net/power-consumption-of-pc-components.html, the average hard drive consumes 10 W. Most hard drives on the network are probably 2 TB or larger, but assuming 1 TB is a worst cast scenario (two 1 TB hard drives use 20 W vs one 2 TB hard drive uses 10 W).

Assumption: BURST network is at its highest difficulty and largest size at 9000 TB.

10 W/drive * 9000 drives = 90,000 W = 90 kilowatts

90 / 196,493 = 0.045% of Bitcoin's electricity at current levels

EDIT: 10 W is the most that a hard drive typically uses. Idling uses about half as much power or less.

Thank you vipervince!  Will use that calculation on the 'energy consumption' page.

Different question, is it possible to boil the time it takes to plot a hard drive down to approximate hours per TB?  Haven't plotted or tried mining yet.

Also, could people throw out some suggestions for questions that should be placed within a Burst FAQ?

And SSD hds are .05-.5 watts each (or less?) (maybe we can soon justify lots of ssd drive purchases  Cheesy)

Night is still young. Coin need time to mature. Burst is only 3 months old but its usually around 3-6 month coin start to mature.

And someone or group is accumulating a lot of coins for many weeks. I guess in order to manipulate price, one has to hold a lot of coins, perhaps more than 50% so that not many can dump the pump when it goes up.

And when price goes high and stay , we will see big machine coming in to mine.

How would would estimate the amount of energy used by the burst network vs Bitcoin?

I guess the biggest question is, what percentage of the time do hard drives need to be online to be used to mine?

Started reading this a little bit more closely.. I would like a comparison that is similar network sizes.. so let's say we grew to be Bitcoin sized and just as much money was placed into buying hard drives as has been placed into buying ASICs.

Remember that if mining with an onboard hard drive, it basically doesn't count.. it's electricity any decentralized network has to use to stay up and running and run the blockchain.  And if it's an external drive then you can read from it and not just idle it but completely turn it off until it's your next turn to mine.. after all it serves no purpose to you(so it runs for 1 minutes per  24 hours or something like that? That's the number I can't figure out how to estimate) or at least that's how I see it, is that fair?

Also, I was worried about this but Google did a study that shows that spinning up and down the drive barely affects it's lifetime. (3% more likely to fail after 2 years of being turned off and on repeatedly)

You'r right yellowduck2. I think at the moment there is so many bursts around us and when the price rises up in the next time, too much people will dump it causing an inevitable deflation.
In my opinion, someone have to destroy part of the monetary base of burst. This just to contain deflation after inflation, sorry for the pun.
At moment the market cap, according to CoinGecko.com stats, is around ฿385 that at the actual average price (121 sat) is about 318.181.818,2 burst in circulation.
This number is so small than DOGE ones, and too big than BTC ones. So let's think about a huge inflation for burst in the next months.
Suppose that burst price rise about to 4000 sat, how many people will continue to hold them?
Deflation could be reality.

My reasoning is a bit catastrophic I know, but not so obvious.
We need to do something about it, don't we?

if and when price will reach 4000 satoshis

1) difficulty will be too high to mine a lot of bursts daily

2) who has millions bursts will be so rich taht is hardthat he will dump all is richness at once.. like happens with btc..... do you really think that a whale will dump all his 60 -100 k btc at once ?

personally if i would have like  8 - 9 millions @ 4k satoshis that would be almost 110k € ... i would sell slowly in batches of 1 - 3 k MONTHLY as , if price is high there is also the hype facto that will make it more sky rocket ....

I truly forget that altcoint market trends aren't so close to real economics theories. At this point we only need to wait and hope for burst rising.

Your reasoing cptfisher is flawless! Thank you to make me better think about it.

Not me. I will be tempted to sell way below this price. I can never hold until it hits 4k. Just too temping to sell along the way. It will go 4k if a whale hold 90% of coin and i will be the one feeding it. Anyway , 4k is not possible now unless burst replace litecoin (but sometimes alt coin do things that seems impossible e.g dogecoin when wolong is around). However, going back to "touch" 1k is a better guess which can happen within 6 months from now (i am betting within 6 months there will be breakthrough on burst feature)

There will be MANY changes within 6 months. The BURST community will definitely see 1k pretty soon, and I don't think 4k is out of sight, but not for 6-8 months or more. But I'm preparing for all of this! Wink

Suppose that burst price rise about to 4000 sat, how many people will continue to hold them?

Wink

By preparing, you mean hoarding Tongue

Seriously though, I gotta get me some more BURST at 100ish sats...

Cheesy
