Took out three of my miners on the flip

One of mine completely flaked out.  Failed over to backup pool ok but then when it tried to fail back to kano even the web interface got all horked. S-7 batch 8.  I had to power cycle it.

Same here, took out a batch 8 S7, does not reposed and can't ping. I'm not local to it, so could be a day out so before I can power cycle it. Bummer

I had 2 batch 5 s7's drop at my second farm.  Drove 10 miles to power cycle them.  Might be time for some IP PDU's

My 6 S7s with Dec firmware and A6 switched back to Kano with no issues.

My other batches switched fine, only had trouble with B8. B8's controller is different to all previous batches.

I took this unscheduled downtime to upgrade the firmware of my B8, since someone mentioned that the latest firmware failed over correctly.

I have 1 B8 among those, it came with Dec 3 firmware but I upgraded to Dec 11 and it switched fine (currently at sidehack's place).

Well after the attack my s5 no longer wants to respond of course it's remote and can't gain access as I'm on my way out of town for the New Years. Guess I need to point one of my solo miners there to hash.

OK, everything should be all good now ... I'll update this post with more details shortly ...

Firstly the DDoS:
It started about 20 minutes after the block - at approximately (29th) 18:54 UTC
It was effective for almost 40 minutes.
According to the data centre, it was too small to trigger the base DDoS protection so until they manually intervened it was successful.

I'll look into their "more expensive" option to make it "always work" ... ... ... yeah even writing that sentence myself makes me wonder what that means ... ... ...

Server down time:
I was able to get into the server while the DDoS was happening due to how I have certain things configured ... details withheld Smiley
I actually shut everything down on the server, upgraded everything, rebooted the server and started all back up.
I started this (coincidentally) just at the end of the DDoS so although some miners may have eventually connected towards the end of the DDoS, they will have been disconnected shortly after.
Taking everything down correctly in order, upgrading everything, rebooting and restarting everything in order took me about half an hour - so I now know that time length, for future reference, if I need to plan that (ahead) some time in the distant future.

The dependency on each process starting and connecting is such that I prefer that all to be a manual process so I know that the final step of ckpool starting means that all miners will be mining valid work and not throwing hashes away.
There are all sorts of possible problems with starting everything automatically that I prefer to not have mining available until I'm sure it is all OK.
If it hasn't been obvious in the past, I will say it clearly, if the pool isn't running with up-to-date work and a good connection to bitcoin, I don't want miners connected risking wasting their hashes, thus on such occasions I would be stopping the main pool service until it's resolved and not allowing connections.
I don't expect this to happen, or if ever, only for a short time, but that's how I prefer to run it and that's also why (like on any pool) you should always have backup pools.

All should be good now (for the last 35 minutes)
If anyone has any problems connecting - of course let me know - or PM me with your account details

Edit: I've also updated the coinbase payout addresses since it's been more than 100 blocks since the last time I did that.

I figure that if your miners are going on a short holiday that you might as well get a guaranteed payment while they are AWOL.

Otherwise they have a costly holiday and don't earn much unless there is a block found while they are on another pool during the failover

For that reason I use PPS failovers.

Yes - I will wash my mouth out with soap after this.

Solo ckpool still down.

You can use the german site, de.ckpool.org:3333, it has not been a target of any of the ddos attacks.  I use it and the solo.ckpool.org as my back-ups.

Ah, great suggestion!  I'm already set to failover to the solo.ckpool.org, will add this one for the second.

I must admit, those are my backup pool also but PPLNS. I switched over to Kano from Antpool after I read this thread.

I've got a batch 3 and a batch 8 S7, both failed over and back with out an issue.  I'm not sure of they are running however, I'll need to go check.

I use slush as my failover.

Thank you Kano for the quick responses to the issues that have happened.

Hi everyone, joined a little while back and have been lurking this thread for a few weeks now. Just mining with an S3 at the moment, mainly doing this as a way to get more familiar with mining in general.

First couple of weeks after I got the S3 was on Eligius so I have that one set as my 2nd choice for failover, mainly because I've already mined there. Interested in thoughts on that - seems that the payment system is set up as such that it doesn't really penalize for hopping pools and therefore seems like a good choice for one that I only intend to mine at for very short amounts of time if CKPool drops out? (I realize there are potential political conflicts that I haven't had time to read up on, sorry if I'm being ignorant here!).

Otherwise, I'm intrigued by using the German CKPool as a failover - that seems like a fantastic option. Currently have Slush as my 3rd option.

Otherwise, hi everyone! Thanks Kano - I'm really happy to have found this pool! It may have taken me took me a few weeks but I'm pretty sure my S3 has found it's "forever home" haha!

Had 4 s7 4.86 drop/lock up.
Was able to power cycle 3 remotely.
Number 4 was using three different PDU's so I did not know the sequence for remote cycle. Had to drive two miles to reset.
Was able to reinstall another s7 I had running in the garage at the datacenter.
The AP7911 apc pdu's work great, have eight. All used, $100 each. Saved me a poopload of trips to the datacenter.
New 4.66 comes thursday.

For those about to block we salute you! AC->BTC

Welcome!  Kano and -ck run great pools.  You definitely can't go wrong on either of them.  If you feel like trying your luck on smaller pools, there are some good options for you, too.

My hashes are going crazy. Like my s4''s showing low hash rates and even rebooted. They show 2th and pointed to different pool to check and show up fine there. Are we still having issues? All my miners seem all over the place. Also I have 4 different dc with different networks so it can't be the network.
