Just a notification in advance of some network maintenance at the NL and JP nodes.
Between 02:00 to 03:00 (19-Jul) UTC, at the NL node, there 'could' be some failovers and failbacks while the provider does some route changes upgrading the network. Any failover 'should' be short so 'should' be nothing to worry about, if we get any short dips of a minute or so in the hash rate.
The same as above for the JP node between 17:00 and 18:00 UTC

... Miners are paid by the network to secure it. ...
... actually "the network"="users" are currently only paying about 10%, miners pay for the rest. Our blocks give us 12.5 BTC no matter what transactions there are out there. The rest above the 12.5 BTC is the "users" paying to have transactions in our blocks ... including those who DON'T pay transaction fees - i.e. zero fee transactions. ... and just to point out something that MOST people seem to completely ignore: A Bitcoin "user" can get in and out of Bitcoin with a single bitcoin transaction. Being a miner requires an investment in Bitcoin that is often VERY large - some of the miners on my pool have invested millions of dollars into Bitcoin - and this is not a large pool - and that depends on Bitcoin working - they make their decisions based on that ... not based on often ignorant posts by people saying that SegWit is all good and no bad. SegWit is going ahead anyway, to my dissatisfaction, but I also understand what you clearly do not understand: Bitcoin is a peer2peer system, so the majority decides what Bitcoin ISIf you don't like what Bitcoin IS then go spend your one single transaction to escape from Bitcoin and go join some alt-coin scam that matches what you want.

... seems we have one of those "there 'could' be some failovers and failbacks" happening on NL at the moment ... Edit: was referring to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=789369.msg20222846#msg20222846... also it only lasted a couple of minutes so all was OK soon after. However, that implies that there will "probably be", rather than "could be", a similar short outage on JP later on as per the post I linked.

I am much more practical about it: whatever will be conducive to most users, including miners, shall have the upper hand in the end. Regarding religion: there is an excellent sci-fi story by Isaac Asimov, "Reason".
In short (don't read further if you want to read the story), robots at the station #5 developed a religion that looks strange to humans. Humans are afraid that robots' religion will result in their inability to follow what they supposed to be doing (pointing the high energy beam at the exact point on the Earth's surface). To the astonishment of humans, robots continued with their task even though they don't believe that Earth exists at all. Earth is spared and a huge destruction does not occur. When asked, Cutie (the leader of robots) replies that he merely "kept all dials at equilibrium in accordance with the will of the Master".
tl;dr kano still rocks as a pool operator, as he keeps "all the dials at equilibrium", even if you believe in Segwit and he is skeptical about it.
sidenote: you don't have to agree with a person's ideas and beliefs to appreciate his/her skill. Cheers

Hi,
I received the following message from Coinbase today:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Coinbase Customer,
The User Activated Hard Fork (UAHF) is a proposal to increase the Bitcoin block size scheduled to activate on August 1. The UAHF is incompatible with the current Bitcoin ruleset and will create a separate blockchain. Should UAHF activate on August 1, Coinbase will not support the new blockchain or its associated coin.
The User Activated Soft Fork (UASF) is a proposal to adopt Segregated Witness on the Bitcoin blockchain and could result in network instability. It is scheduled to activate at the same time as the UAHF.
To ensure the safety of customers’ funds, we will temporarily suspend bitcoin deposits, withdrawals, and buy/sell starting approximately 4 hours before activation of either fork.
If you currently have bitcoin in your Coinbase account, and do not wish to have access to UAHF coins or have immediate access to your bitcoin, you are not required to take any action. If you wish to have access to UAHF coins or you wish to have immediate access to your bitcoin, you should send your bitcoin from Coinbase to your external address by July 31.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So my questions are:
Can I still use Coinbase address for Kano since bitcoin transaction will be temporarily suspended? Coinbase will temporarily suspend all bitcoin transactions. When will it resume?
Thanks for your answers!

Very well put As for the investment part of mining mentioned in same post... Since Feb 2014 I've bought 102 miners, mostly Ants of all flavors. Figure an average cost of say $1.2k and do the math.... BTW: only cash outlay was $8k Feb through late April. After that all upgrades paid by farm earnings Then balance that with the pool reporting me having earned over 90 BTC here + what I earned on EMC before they shut down and well...

Seems to me you should be asking Coinbase these questions.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?

Seems to me you should be asking Coinbase these questions. Or asking themselves why they would use an online wallet?

Seems to me you should be asking Coinbase these questions. Or asking themselves why they would use an online wallet? Yes, at this point in time the safest thing to do is have your own wallet and then see what happens with the various activations - and not doing any transactions on the days that changes occur. I will 'probably' suspend some payouts also if the network status gets 'hectic' - though I don't expect there to really be too many problems since it's not a 33/33/33 issue any more (33% nothing, 33% SegWit, 33% BU) it's now almost all SegWit but under various names. I'm, of course, still working on our 'position' in the network, but will have that resolved soon.
