It can get annoying and pretty expensive keeping the s9's in tip top shape!  I'm glad that I got a couple control boards now so that I won't have to wait if another one goes out.

Are S9's prone to failing? what tends to go wrong? what causes it? I guess heat wont help with the life. I have ordered a new S9 and reading this post has got me wondering, when is it likely to go wrong? will it last a year? or is it more like 6 months?
... s9's ...

Now that they have a repair center in the U.S I'm sure that things might be faster but I don't know.
...
BitmainWarranty repairs in the US is not covered by Bitmain's warranty.

If the S9 is within warranty, you have to send it back to Bitmain in China to (possibly) get free repairs.

If you send it to BitmainWarranty, you have to pay no matter what, unless you bought it from BitmainWarranty.

Oh, I see.  I didn't know that, although in my case I think it might still be cheaper to send to U.S since it is closer to me, that way I would save on timing but then again it all depends how much they would charge for the repair. Smiley

And guys can someone please tell me if it is possible to load pictures from ipad into this forum?  When I click the picture icon it doesn't seem to do anything beside adding a couple of IMG words to the text.  Thanks!  Smiley

I've had my 8 s9's for about 6 months now so far I've had to change 1 control board and from what it looks a second one will be going out soon as well as 1 hashing board that I have to send for repair now and not to mention that 2 or 3 ( don't remember) s9's have completely failed on me , that was within the guarantee time so I got them repaired for free but at the same time I had to pay around $70 to send each unit back by EMS and wait for about a month and a half to get it back.  It took them around 2-3 weeks just to confirm that they've received them. Now that they have a repair center in the U.S I'm sure that things might be faster but I don't know.

In my case from what it looks the control boards keep going out when the electricity keeps getting shut off very often or because of spikes, I think it can even brake just from some static electricity so I wouldn't recommend you touching it too much.  It is important to have a good power supply so don't be stingy and get a good one right away or it will cost you more later and having an extra power supply is a good idea as well as having an extra control board so that if one of these 2 brake you won't loose BTC, waiting or even looking for them.  Waiting for some parts or for your unit to get repaired is the worst thing!  I hope I didn't discourage you too much but it is the reality.  I keep my miners as cool as I can but where I'm located even with a special cooling system I can only have the room temp at around 27c and max I try not to get it go beyond 31-32c and I can tell you that at 27c they seem to work a lot more stable and even put out more hash.

Hope that helped! Happy mining!  Wink

Thats great, very useful information. Much appreciated. Its not put me off, but I do have a spare 3kw UPS system laying about, I'll run it through that, along with a good PSU. My room temp is around 27deg C here. Windows open trying to keep the office cool, and that just with 1 x S5, lol. Going to be a different climate with the S9, good job its winter coming.

Is your s5 pretty close to the window?  If yes then you should really consider buying some adapters like this;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antminer-s1-s2-s3-s4-s5-s7-s9-L3-zeus-lightning-thunder-fan-duct-shroud-cooling/172818525966?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D47507%26meid%3D8ef6d894d301473da4a6eeadbd253b44%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D172227933822&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

And connect some flexible ductings like this to every miner;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-inch-x-8-ft-Flexible-DUCTING-duct-exhaust-fan-blower-dryer-hose-aluminum-feet-/160970919201?epid=679962407&hash=item257a9d4d21:g:HSQAAOSw~uhUnYAh

And just stick them out the window or better make a window insert out of wood and cut some holes in it and stick these hoses into holes.  I'll show you how I have it done as soon as I find out how to load a picture here in the forum from my ipad.  I got couple of laptops but I barely use them, only for connecting my Ledger wallet, other than that my ipad is like my second right hand, always with me! Hehe.  Wink

My experience with sending machines to Bitmain for (under warranty) repair has been very commendable.
Unfortunately, I have had to send in 4 machines up to this point. Also, I am not sending them to China. If you are in the US, you send
them to LA. They test the machine the day they receive it, confirm that it does indeed have a problem. They process it w/ China and I usually
receive a repaired machine within 3 business days. It does kinda irk me that I send in a new machine for repair and usually receive a clearly used sometimes
dirty, visible ware on the outside, machine back. However, as long as it works, I can live with that. Does Bitmain repair machines that are out of warranty?

Bitmain Warranty is a different story......

6 weeks ago I sent in 3 hashing boards for a S7. I never got notified that they received until I emailed them 2 weeks later. I have never got any kinda update about my
boards whether they have been looked at/repair/repairable/paperweights/etc. I emailed them last Friday. They responded that they have not been able to repair them
and that this week they were gonna give it another try. You can never get them on the phone, the experience just kinda makes me think that they get there stock from
people that send stuff to them and "they can't repair it", then stock shows up on their website for sale. Maybe not. Maybe they will actually email me back sometime. And if
they are unrepairable they will actually mail them back to me, only time will tell.

Anyway, that is my experience with the 2 repair services.

Now I'm gonna go do a Block dance out in the garage. I hope it helps.

Anyway, that is my experience with the 2 repair services.

My experience with the two services was a little difference.  I have had 4 boards fail between 6 S9s.  The first 3 were from 2 of my earlier machines and were out of warranty, so I send them to Bitmain Warranty in Colorado.  Never heard much back for a couple weeks and when I eventually heard back from then (about 4 weeks total), they apologized send the boards back fixed for free.

My last experience was with the new repair place in LA.  Since the machine was under warranty, I had to send the whole machine.  This also took a month and it wasn't until I opened a separate support ticket that magically my machine was shipped back.

Both took 4 weeks, and cost nothing.   I guess I can't really complain. Smiley . On the other hand I did lose 2 months of hashing so it did cost lost revenue.

Yeah I saw it on the graph just after it happened as I got on a train but I don't get as much info from my phone as when I'm in front of my desktop Smiley
It came straight back, as did the miners, so all's ok.
The main server didn't show a reconnect but the nodes do cause a failover on occasion without the main server showing anything so I couldn't see which node it was - but that size would have been one of the stratum.kano.is nodes.

reddit mentions kanockpool (former name) in connection with tx spam proliferation.
I did not look the thread over, just noticed the name mentioned.
Perhaps, kano should post something there to refute. Maybe he already did?

In any case, don't blame the messenger. I was here for a while.

EDIT: nevermind, kano is already on the top of the story
"it just confirms “any and all transactions available.”
LaurentMT comment: "pool [kano] could be telling the truth"
the story ends as far as kano is concerned, but maybe not for others, but the fact that it was wrong for one pool (or three) out of seven mentioned makes the story much less reliable even if i wanted to believe it as far as antpool, viabtc and btc.com is concerned (at least).

I was asked in PM a few days ago and my answer was:
Lulz - articles trying to create drama where none exists - you need to find who created the transactions.

Gotta love how many experts there are in bitcoin who clearly have no idea what they're talking about Smiley

I use core bitcoind and I don't prioritise transactions, just confirm any and all transactions available.
Any pool using ckpool will do the same since ckpool uses bitcoind
e.g. BitClub uses ckpool also

That pretty much sums it up.
