Just reading up on Mt Gox, weird how similar this is...BTC withdrawals suspended, BS reason given, then blame the theft on a 'bug' in the software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mt._Gox#Withdrawals_delayed_or_refused

But Mt Gox didn't have former employees catching them red-handed withdrawing the BTC to their private wallets, and as Green is in 'complete control of the Mintpal system' it's going to be extremely difficult for him to squirm out of this in a UK court.  Plus the Syscoin and PIE funds...

Help track the missing 3,700 BTC: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2jmuq1/help_track_3700_btc_taken_from_mintpal_by_scammer/

Can we get a statement from MintPal founders (Jay or Jason) regarding the sale transaction and how it was paid (MintPal's users BTC?) ?
They should be more cooperative. It was their decision to sell the exchange to a scammer and put their users at risk. Moreover, if they were paid from MintPal's users balances that makes them a part of the crime.

DCryptFund on twitter reported he was arrested, but no further sources come out even with some digging so i'm skeptical myself.  Plus I think the whole thing was premeditated so good chance he isn't in his home country (UK) probably sunning it up in Asia somewhere, most likely Japan.

So imagine you are CEO and your company is launching a major exchange...and you decide to go on vacation at the same time..and at least 3,700 BTC goes missing.

'Premeditated'...either Freudian slip or he's basically telling us the truth for once.

I talked to them on IRC, they said they had in fact sold mintpal to him but didn't provide any more details. Why they sold to some shady scammer? who knows. Maybe they had been hacked and lost money from deposits and wanted to get rid of the hot potato?
This soap opera is getting pretty disgusting. the thief is laughing at you all from Japan now. the "bug" bullshit is so shameful... Gox all over again

Are they still available on IRC? I cannot find them. Maybe we should write to Expedia complaining about Jay if he is refusing to cooperate, because they are partly to blame for this debacle.
First of all, the sale transaction was done in a shady way and users were not given a possibility to withdraw funds in a timely manner - this is MintaPal's founders fault. You cannot just transfer fiduciary duty to an unknown third party without having any liability.
Secondly, after the scam has been revealed they are silent and not willing to be open. Their cooperation can significantly increase the chance of finding the crook and bringing him in front of the justice.

Well, even if they weren't paid from the balances, it's a shitty situation.

If one can spend say 1000 BTC to acquire an exchange which has 10.000 BTCs in it, they can then use the 10k BTC to nullify the buying costs and then keep 9k BTC for profit. It's insane.
